Choose timber fasteners and connectors for the loads they must transfer, the conditions they will face, and the way the assembly is meant to be inspected, dismantled, repaired, and reused. A bolt that can be undone is not, by itself, a reusable connection: the timber, holes, hardware, access and removal sequence must also remain suitable after service.

For a connection intended to come apart, start with the load path and removal plan, then compare candidate systems for damage, durability and structural behavior. Ottenhaus and co-authors’ 2023 review of reversible timber connections supports bolts with accessible nuts and washers as a potentially reversible option when kept in the elastic range; it also explains why screws, nails and dowels may be difficult to reuse with their original performance. No connector type is a universal winner.

What makes a timber connection circular?

In circular timber construction, a connection is judged not only by whether it carries its design loads during use, but also by whether the assembly can be inspected, maintained, taken apart and directed toward another use. Reversibility is therefore a property of the whole connection and assembly—not simply the presence of a removable fastener.

The timber member must be accessible, the connection must be reachable with the tools and sequence planned for removal, and the joint must be capable of being dismantled without unacceptable damage. The component also needs a plausible next use after removal. A joint can be physically dismantled while the timber around its holes has been crushed, split, deformed or otherwise left unsuitable for the intended reuse.

The European Commission Joint Research Centre describes circular and modular construction approaches that include design for deconstruction. That framing matters for timber: a connector selected late in the design may be impossible to remove safely once it is enclosed by finishes, adjacent members or other parts of the assembly. Plan access and the order of work while the building is being designed.

Start with the connection’s job, not a preferred fastener

Before comparing products or connection concepts, describe the structural job of each joint. A connector’s suitability depends on the function it performs in the structural system. A joint transferring axial force, lateral shear or a combination of actions may call for a different solution, and expected changes or reversals in loading matter to the design.

Map the load path

Trace how forces pass through the connected timber members, fasteners and any connector plates or brackets. Identify the direction of loading at the joint and whether the connection may be loaded in more than one direction or experience load reversals. This is a design description, not a substitute for structural calculations: the project designer must establish the applicable loads, capacity and required behavior for the specific structure.

Define the structural behavior you need

Capacity is not the only relevant property. Consider stiffness, ductility, energy dissipation and where damage could occur. Ottenhaus et al. recommend that reversible connections generally remain in the elastic domain and experience no or very low damage. Where the structural system needs ductility or energy dissipation, their review describes capacity design that identifies potential ductile elements for replacement while protecting other connections.

This distinction prevents a common mistake: assuming a connection can be reused because its fastener can be removed. A connection that has yielded, suffered timber crushing or developed deformed holes may no longer have predictable performance, even if a wrench can still undo it.

Set the intended reuse outcome

Be clear about whether the goal is to recover the timber member, reuse a connector, reuse the complete joint, or simply make maintenance possible. Those are different targets. A member may remain useful even if a fixing must be replaced, provided the design allows a suitable new fixing location and the remaining timber has been assessed. Reuse should be based on the condition and intended structural role of the recovered part, not on the fact that it came out of the building intact.

Compare connection concepts by their reuse behavior

The table summarizes the general tendencies reported in Ottenhaus et al.’s review. These are not capacity ratings or a universal ranking. A specific system’s suitability depends on its design, use, loading, exposure and technical documentation.

Connection concept Disassembly and reuse considerations What to check in design
Bolts or threaded rods with nuts and washers Potentially reversible when the connection stays in the elastic range. Accessible nuts and washers support removal; predrilled, slightly oversized holes can facilitate assembly and disassembly. Access to both sides where needed, the removal sequence, hole condition, timber bearing areas and the effect of any expected movement or prior loading.
Axially loaded self-tapping screws Removal after service is theoretically possible, but friction, adhesion effects, coating damage and allowable head torque can make removal difficult. Long, slender screws may be particularly challenging; many are designed for single-use installation. Whether the actual screw and installation are intended to be removed, whether the head remains accessible and usable, and whether the timber and screw remain suitable after extraction.
Laterally loaded screws or nails May not provide the same performance after removal and reinstallation. The timber element may need new fastener locations for a later use. Likely damage around the original fixing, availability and suitability of new locations, and the connection’s behavior under the project’s loading.
Dowel-type fasteners Tight fits can make removal damaging. Reassembly can introduce larger tolerances and reduce stiffness or performance. Whether the intended benefit of the joint justifies the risk of damage and whether the post-disassembly joint can be assessed and designed for its next use.
Proprietary brackets and connector systems A steel-to-steel portion may come apart while screws or other timber fixings limit reversibility of the complete assembly. The specific system’s technical assessment, timber fixing details, access and stated conditions for removal or reuse.
Glued-in rods Some configurations may be reversible if the rod remains undamaged and attached to the member. The glued interface itself should not be assumed to be easily removable. System-specific evidence for the intended disassembly and reuse conditions, and the condition of the rod and timber after service.

A category-level description cannot establish the capacity, certification or reuse suitability of a particular product. Use the technical documentation for the actual system and have the project-specific connection designed and checked by a qualified professional.

Plan a reversible connection before construction

Disassembly needs to be designed into the assembly. A fastener may be technically removable but practically inaccessible, trapped behind another component or unsafe to undo in the available sequence. Work through the following decisions before the connection details are fixed.

  1. Record the loads and connection function. Identify the forces and directions the joint must transfer, including combined loading or reversals where relevant. Have the designer establish the structural requirements for the project.
  2. Choose a target for disassembly. Decide which parts should be recoverable and what condition they must be in for their planned next use. This clarifies whether replacement fasteners, new fixing positions or a replacement ductile element are acceptable.
  3. Draw the removal sequence. Show how each nut, screw, bracket or other part will be reached and removed, and in what order. Include the tools and working access required. Check that taking one part out will not leave another part trapped or create an unsafe condition.
  4. Check likely damage points. Consider fastener deformation, hole enlargement, timber crushing, damage to coatings, corrosion and the effects of service loading and moisture movement. Identify which parts could be inspected or replaced and which damage would undermine reuse.
  5. Coordinate the connection with the assembly. Preserve access through adjacent members, finishes and other building components. The JRC’s treatment of circular and modular construction reinforces that design for deconstruction concerns the assembly and its construction method, not just an isolated connector.
  6. Document the intended installation and future removal. Keep the connection details, component identification and any system-specific instructions with the project information. A later team needs to know what was installed and how it was intended to come apart.
  7. Verify the final design against governing requirements. Confirm the applicable code edition, national provisions, product assessments and structural calculations for the project’s jurisdiction. Do not infer local requirements from a standards catalog listing alone.

Where bolts can help—and what they do not solve

Bolts or threaded rods with nuts and washers are a credible option when future disassembly is a priority because the threaded fixing can, in principle, be undone without withdrawing a screw from the timber. This is not a guarantee of reuse. The connection must remain within the intended structural behavior, the hardware must remain accessible and serviceable, and the surrounding timber must remain sound enough for its next role.

Ottenhaus et al. note that predrilled, slightly oversized holes can facilitate assembly and disassembly. This is a general connection principle, not a prescribed hole dimension or a complete design instruction. Hole geometry and the rest of the connection still need project-specific structural design.

Also check the timber bearing areas. Compression around a bolt or washer can crush the surrounding timber; that damage can compromise the connection even if the bolt itself is undamaged. The review’s recommendation to keep reversible connections elastic and at no or very low damage is a useful design aim, but it does not replace the checks required for the actual loads and configuration.

Account for service conditions and damage over time

A joint’s condition after service can differ from its condition at installation. Timber and connections may change through crushing, yielding, fastener-hole deformation, creep, moisture fluctuation and corrosion. These mechanisms can affect stiffness, strength, fit or ease of removal. A connection that separates cleanly should still be inspected before any reuse decision.

Moisture and timber movement

Moisture fluctuation can change timber and connection behavior over time. Consider the exposure and the likely movement of the connected members when selecting and detailing the connection. Do not assume that a fitting that was easy to assemble will remain easy to remove after the structure has been in service.

Corrosion and access for maintenance

Corrosion can make bolts and nuts difficult to remove. The review also notes increased friction in corroded galvanized dowels. Select materials and corrosion protection for the actual exposure and applicable requirements, and make the hardware inspectable where maintenance or future removal is part of the plan. These observations do not establish one coating or material as suitable for every project.

Inspect the timber as well as the hardware

Look beyond whether the fastener is visibly intact. Timber around the connection may have crushed or changed, holes may have elongated, and previous loading may have altered the joint’s behavior. Moisture history, creep and corrosion also matter to the assessment. The available evidence does not provide a universal inspection threshold or a rule that makes a previously loaded member safe for reuse; the intended next use must be assessed on the member’s actual condition.

Do not confuse easy removal with safe reuse

Disassembly answers whether components can be separated. Reuse answers whether a recovered component can safely and appropriately serve again. The second question needs a condition assessment and a design basis for the next use.

  • Fastener removed: This establishes only that the joint was dismantled; it does not establish that the fastener can be reused or that the timber remains structurally suitable.
  • Member appears undamaged: Visual appearance alone does not establish remaining capacity or stiffness after prior loading, creep, moisture change or concealed damage.
  • Original holes remain usable: Hole enlargement or damage may affect connection performance; a new fixing position may be needed, subject to design checks.
  • Hardware can be replaced: Replacing a damaged fixing can help only if the timber, layout and revised connection have been assessed for the intended loads.

For a member intended for another structural role, base the reuse decision on its condition and the requirements of the new design. Do not treat “unbolted” as a synonym for “safe to reuse.”

Verify codes and product evidence for the actual project

Connection selection must be checked against the rules governing the project’s location and the specific products being considered. The available catalog information for EN 1995-1-1:2025 identifies a Eurocode 5 design-rules entry, but that catalog record alone does not establish whether the edition has been adopted for a particular country, which national annex applies, or which requirements govern a given site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the current governing documents with the project designer. For proprietary connectors, review the technical assessment and intended use conditions rather than relying on a general description of the product category. COST’s publication page for “Design of connections in timber structures” describes practical timber connection design resources; it is a reference resource, not project-specific approval or a substitute for calculations.

A practical selection checklist

Before approving a connection concept, check each item against the project drawings and specifications:

  • The connection’s role and load path are defined, including relevant directions, combined loading and reversals.
  • The required structural behavior is specified, including stiffness, capacity, ductility and any intended replaceable element.
  • The intended disassembly and reuse outcome is explicit for the timber, fasteners and connector parts.
  • The fastener and any nuts, washers, plates or brackets can be reached and removed in a safe, workable sequence.
  • Potential damage to the timber, holes, fasteners and coatings has been considered for installation, service and removal.
  • Exposure, moisture movement, corrosion risk, inspection and maintenance have been addressed for the actual location.
  • The product’s technical information supports the proposed use and any claimed removal or reuse conditions.
  • The project designer has checked the applicable code edition, national provisions and project-specific structural calculations.
  • A later reuse decision will be based on the recovered member’s condition and next intended role, not merely on successful disassembly.
