There is no single fastener that guarantees a strong, durable hold for every project. Choose it to suit the materials, joint, loads, installation and exposure—then follow current product guidance and applicable design requirements. For wood joints, factors such as fastener geometry, grain direction and lead holes can affect holding resistance; outdoors or in damp conditions, corrosion compatibility matters too.
Start with the joint, not the fastener
Identify the materials being joined and what the connection must do. A decorative trim joint, a wood frame connection and a metal-to-masonry fixing have different demands. Screws, nails, bolts, nuts, rivets, studs and other mechanical fasteners are distinct forms, not interchangeable solutions. Standards address properties including materials, dimensions and mechanical characteristics; ASTM’s catalogue describes several fastener standards, including ASTM F1667/F1667M-21a for driven fasteners.
- Determine whether the connection is structural or nonstructural and what loads it must resist.
- Identify every material in the joint, including treated wood or wood-based products.
- Consider whether moisture, temperature or corrosive exposure will affect the assembly.
- For structural or code-sensitive work, use a designed connection and applicable current standards rather than choosing by appearance or a generic rule of thumb.
For wood, consider how the fastener engages the material
For wood and wood-based materials, holding is not determined by the fastener label alone. ASTM D1761-20(2025), Standard Test Methods for Mechanical Fasteners in Wood and Wood-Based Materials, covers testing of fasteners including screws and addresses withdrawal and lateral resistance.
Factors that can affect withdrawal resistance
- Wood properties and the type of wood-based product.
- Fastener size, shape and surface condition.
- How quickly the fastener is installed and changes in the material after installation.
- Fastener orientation relative to the wood fibers.
- Whether a pre-bored lead hole is appropriate.
These variables mean that a screw or nail that works in one wood joint is not automatically suitable for another. Use product-specific installation instructions and design information for the actual materials and connection.

Match material and coating to the exposure
Moisture and corrosive conditions can affect fastener durability. Simpson Strong-Tie’s manufacturer guidance says: “It is important to select a material and/or coating that is suitable for the intended application and environment based upon factors such as corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of the material.” Its corrosion guidance includes application considerations such as treated-wood situations.
Do not assume that a coating is suitable just because a fastener is described as corrosion-resistant. Check the manufacturer’s current recommendations for the specific fastener, material, treatment and service environment. If the joint will be exposed to dampness or exterior conditions, material compatibility is part of choosing a reliable connection, not an afterthought.

Understand what corrosion testing can—and cannot—tell you
ASTM G198-17(2023) is a comparative test method for corrosion performance of driven fasteners in treated wood under exterior or high-moisture exposure. A comparative test can help assess performance under the method’s conditions; it does not predict how many years a fastener will last in a particular building or climate. Treat test results and product claims as evidence for comparison, not as a calendar-life guarantee.

A specific fastener recommendation requires more than knowing that a connection is “for wood” or “for construction.” Relevant inputs include load, fastener type, moisture service and temperature. A manufacturer design tool requests inputs of this kind, but its result page lists older design-code editions; do not treat its output alone as confirmation of current code compliance.

A practical selection checklist
- Describe the connection: list the joined materials, joint geometry and whether the connection is structural.
- Establish demands: identify the loads and any relevant service conditions, including moisture and temperature.
- Choose a suitable fastener form: compare screws, nails, bolts or other forms against the actual connection and manufacturer guidance.
- Check engagement and installation: for wood, consider size, geometry, grain orientation, surface condition and whether a lead hole is appropriate.
- Check durability: confirm that the fastener material and coating suit the materials and exposure, including treated wood where applicable.
- Verify the design: for structural or code-sensitive work, use current standards, product instructions and project-specific design information.
