How to Choose an Outlet Electrical Box for Your Home Upgrade

Choose an outlet electrical box by installation stage, required box-fill capacity, mounting and cable-entry method, device fit, material and listed application—not appearance or gang count alone.

There is no single best outlet electrical box for every home upgrade. Choose one that suits the wall’s installation stage, provides enough box-fill capacity for the wiring and device, and matches the cable-entry, mounting, material, grounding and listing requirements of the job. The models below are examples to compare—not universal recommendations.

Start with the wall: open or finished?

“New work” and “old work” describe when and how a box is installed, not simply how old the house is. New-work boxes are fitted while framing is accessible; old-work boxes are designed to mount in an existing finished wall. Some products offer more than one mounting configuration, but the product’s listed installation method and actual site conditions still determine whether it is appropriate.

For an open wall or accessible framing

A new-work box typically attaches to framing before the wall finish goes on. If the finished wall depth needs adjustment, an adjustable-bracket model may help, provided its mounting arrangement and listed application fit the job.

For an existing finished wall

An old-work box is intended to be installed through an opening in the wall and secured using its specified bracket or clamps. Check that the wall thickness, opening, cable entry and space behind the device suit the model.

Calculate box fill before choosing by gang count

Gang count describes how many device positions a box provides; it does not by itself tell you whether the box has enough volume for the wiring. The applicable box-fill rules account for the conductors and other items enclosed. Leviton’s discussion of 2019 NEC material quotes NEC 314.16: “Boxes and conduit bodies shall be of an approved size to provide free space for all enclosed conductors.” Its article discusses conductor, clamp, device and grounding-conductor allowances. Check the current requirements adopted in your jurisdiction rather than treating that 2019-code discussion as a complete or current installation instruction. Read Leviton’s box-fill discussion.

Use the required calculation and the exact box specifications for the wiring and device in the installation. Do not assume a larger-looking box, a particular gang count or a stated capacity alone resolves compliance.

Check cable entry, material and grounding provisions

  • Cable entry and clamping: Match the box’s entry openings and clamping method to the cable and installation instructions. Confirm there is room for the wiring and device once installed.
  • Material: Boxes may be nonmetallic or metallic. Material affects the enclosure and its installation requirements; it does not, by itself, establish that the job has an equipment ground.
  • Grounding and bonding: UL’s guidance applies to certain metallic outlet boxes in its Metallic Outlet Boxes category with concentric or eccentric knockouts. If knockout-ring integrity is compromised, the guidance says a bonding jumper may be required. This is a specific condition, not a rule for every metallic or nonmetallic box. See UL’s guidance on concentric and eccentric knockouts.

Do not treat a box change as an electrical-ground upgrade

Replacing a receptacle or box does not create an equipment ground where the wiring lacks one. Leviton warns against replacing a non-grounding outlet with a grounded outlet and discusses a GFCI option for older ungrounded installations. The correct solution depends on the existing wiring and applicable requirements; do not infer that a box swap makes grounded wiring safe or compliant. Read Leviton’s guidance on non-grounding outlets.

ESFI recommends having outlet installation performed by a qualified electrician. It notes as historical context that grounding-type receptacles were first required for all 15- and 20-ampere receptacle outlets in the 1971 edition of the NEC; that history does not establish which code applies to a particular home today. See ESFI’s outlet safety guidance.

  2. Confirm the box-fill requirement: Account for the actual conductors, clamps, device and grounding conductors under the locally adopted rules.
  3. Match the physical installation: Check gang and device fit, cable entry, clamping, wall depth and any finish-depth adjustment.
  4. Review material and bonding details: Follow the exact product instructions and applicable requirements, especially for metallic enclosures and knockouts.
  5. Verify the listed application: Confirm the box is approved for the intended location and mounting arrangement. If the wiring or grounding is uncertain, have a qualified electrician assess it.
