Choose a surge-protective power strip by its documented electrical and surge ratings, outlet layout, and placement instructions—not by an aquarium-specific “best” ranking. A surge protector does not replace GFCI protection or a drip loop: each addresses a different electrical hazard around water.
What a surge protector does—and what it does not do
A surge protector is designed to limit transient overvoltage reaching connected equipment. A GFCI monitors current imbalance and is intended to interrupt power under ground-fault conditions. A drip loop is a cord-routing precaution that reduces the chance of water traveling along a cord into an electrical connection. These protections are separate; a surge-protective strip alone does not establish GFCI protection or prevent electric shock. How to choose a surge-protective power strip
Match the rating to the equipment load
Check the electrical labels and instructions for every device you plan to connect, then account for their loads together. Tank capacity in gallons does not tell you the electrical load. Do not exceed the strip’s rating, and consult a qualified electrician about circuit capacity or installation questions.
Choose a practical outlet count and layout
Allow enough outlets for the intended equipment, including space for bulky plugs. Do not use unsafe adapters or connect power strips in a chain to make an undersized layout work. More outlets do not mean a higher safety rating.

Compare documented surge specifications
Compare the protective ratings stated by each manufacturer and look for any provided protection indicator or replacement guidance. The available aquarium guides give differing joule-rating recommendations, but those are guide-specific advice, not an established aquarium standard. No universal aquarium-specific joule threshold or verified best model is established by the available evidence. Check markings and follow the manufacturer’s instructions
Review the strip’s product markings and use instructions, including any restrictions on location or connected devices. UL 1018 covers specified electric equipment for indoor aquarium use at 300 volts or less, with examples such as heaters, pumps, filters, and aerators. The listing describes the standard as active and says it was last revised September 17, 2020. That scope does not show that a power strip is certified under UL 1018; look for separate evidence for any certification claim. Place the strip and route cords with water in mind
Keep the strip and electrical connections away from splashes and drips, and follow the strip maker’s placement instructions. An indoor strip should not be treated as waterproof. Route each appliance cord so its lowest point is below the outlet or strip connection; this low point forms the drip loop and helps keep water running down the cord from reaching the connection. Confirm whether the receptacle or circuit supplying the aquarium has GFCI protection; a surge-protective strip does not provide that assurance. If you are uncertain about the wiring, the circuit’s capacity, or whether a receptacle or portable GFCI adapter is suitable, ask a qualified electrician. Use aquarium equipment as its maker directs
Follow the instructions supplied with each heater, pump, filter, and other appliance.
