For ordinary hand-washed dishes, rinse off the soap. Accidentally eating from a dish with a little diluted hand dish soap left on it is not, based on available poison-control guidance, a reason to assume serious poisoning is likely. But that guidance does not establish a harmless residue threshold or show that repeatedly eating from visibly soapy dishes is safe.
What the evidence says about soap residue
There is no identified household study or clinical threshold that measures the health risk from detergent left on an unrinsed plate. Poison Control says swallowing a small amount of ordinary hand dish soap, alone or diluted in dishwater, usually has minor effects; nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea can occur, and serious effects are less likely when the soap is diluted. That is general accidental-ingestion guidance, not a measurement of the dose left on tableware.

So, a one-time missed rinse is not evidence that illness is likely, but it is also not a reason to leave soap on dishes as a routine practice. Rinse especially well if a dish feels slippery or shows a visible film.
Why rinsing is part of washing
In household food-safety guidance, the FDA recommends washing dishes and utensils with hot, soapy water. In commercial food service, the FDA Food Code describes a separate rinse after washing to remove or dilute detergent, abrasive material, and food debris before sanitizing. Its 2022 Annex 3 says: “It is important to rinse off detergents, abrasive, and food debris after the wash step to avoid diluting or inactivating the sanitizer.” That procedure applies to retail food-service warewashing; it is not a claim that households must follow the same wash-rinse-sanitize-air-dry sequence.

Hand washing and dishwashers use different detergents
| Dishwashing method | Detergent and intended use | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Hand washing | Hand dish soap is intended for washing dishes by hand. Poison Control describes small accidental ingestions of ordinary hand dish soap or diluted dishwater as usually causing minor effects. | Rinse dishes after washing, particularly if soap film remains. |
| Automatic dishwasher | Machine detergent is formulated for automatic dishwashers and may contain strong alkalis; exposure effects depend on the product, amount, and duration. | Do not use automatic dishwasher detergent for hand washing. For direct exposure or ingestion, follow the product label and contact poison control for advice. |
A dishwasher’s normal cycle is not interchangeable with the separate commercial wash-rinse-sanitize-air-dry procedure: the methods have different settings and purposes.
Do not confuse dish residue with the warning about washing produce
The FDA advises against washing fruits and vegetables with soap or household detergents because produce is porous and may absorb them despite rinsing. That warning concerns produce; it does not establish that a washed dish retains a harmful dose of detergent.

A boil-water advisory changes dishwashing guidance because the concern is potentially contaminated water, not routine detergent residue. Follow local instructions.
