In 2023, furniture coverage leaned toward rounded silhouettes, tactile upholstery, warm natural colors and flexible designs. These were reported design themes and designer expectations—not a verified ranking of what consumers bought. For a home project, the useful question is which ideas suit the room, how it will be used and what will work with the finishes already planned.
What furniture styles were prominent in 2023?
Two kinds of reporting point to the period’s aesthetic: a designer survey captured expectations, while industry coverage described products and styles being presented. Apartment Therapy reported that 86 percent of surveyed designers expected curved and rounded furniture to be prominent in 2023, and 59 percent expected wavy pieces to appear prominently. The American Home Furnishings Alliance (AHFA), reporting on products introduced at the High Point Market in North Carolina, identified organic forms, warm neutral upholstery and nature-inspired textures and themes. Curved sofa arms, rounded tabletops and generous cushions were part of the 2023 picture. The German furniture-industry association VDM described configurable sofas arranged as family-friendly landscapes, with adjustment features for head, back and leg support. It also noted delicate metal feet in black, warm gold or bronze tones. These details show how the trend could combine a softer outline with practical comfort and a more visually light base.

For a renovation or furnishing plan, treat a rounded piece as a layout decision as much as a style choice. Check its full footprint and the clearance needed around it; a curved outline does not necessarily make a large sofa easier to fit. Consider whether the seat depth, cushion feel and support suit the people who will use it.
Tactile upholstery and a warmer palette
Soft-looking, textured upholstery featured alongside warm neutrals and earth-inspired shades. VDM called out bouclé for its soft, mottled texture and wide-striped cord as a returning upholstery choice. Its listed textile colors included stone and earth tones as well as sea blue, night green, terracotta and turmeric. AHFA likewise described warm neutral upholstery and a shift from gray toward brown in the wood finishes of products it covered.
For a room with fixed finishes, such as flooring, cabinetry or tile, warm neutrals can bridge materials without making every surface the same color. A stronger accent can add contrast through a chair or smaller upholstered piece. Check the care label and fabric specifications against household use: trend coverage establishes that these fabrics appeared, not how they compare in stain resistance, wear or maintenance.

Modular furniture and useful flexibility
Modular sofa systems were one response to changing needs and room layouts. VDM described configurable furniture that could be assembled to suit individual preferences, as well as adjustable seating support and integrated USB-C charging. Home-office furniture remained part of its account of furnishing trends, reflecting the need for rooms and furniture to serve more than one purpose.
Before choosing a modular piece, map the layout and check which configurations are actually supported by the system. Decide whether adjustability, charging or a work surface solves a real need, and confirm the location of outlets and cable routes during planning. A system that can be rearranged is only useful if its components fit the available space and circulation paths.
Wood, fluted detailing and material choices
Natural-looking materials and visible texture extended beyond upholstery. VDM reported wood across different rooms and vertically fluted fronts, while AHFA noted natural materials and organic shapes in the market introductions it covered. VDM also mentioned linoleum in micro-office design and recycled PET textiles for weather-resistant outdoor furnishings.

The 2023 coverage was not limited to sofas and lounge seating. VDM described fluted wood in kitchens, bedrooms treated as more than sleeping spaces, and increased attention to bathroom furniture and details. It also noted outdoor areas borrowing cues from indoor rooms, with some furniture designed for both settings.
That room-by-room approach can help create visual continuity, but indoor and outdoor conditions are not interchangeable. Check whether a piece is rated for its intended exposure and use, and verify care requirements before specifying it in a covered patio, garden or other exterior setting.

How to bring a 2023 look into a project
Use the trend as a starting point, then assess fit, function and finish before committing.
- Start with the room. Measure the available floor area and preserve clear paths around doors, seating and work areas. Compare the furniture dimensions with the actual layout.
- Choose the shape for its use. Consider rounded or modular forms in light of circulation, the number of people using the room and the kind of seating support they prefer.
- Set the material and color direction. Decide whether a warm neutral, a wood finish or a stronger accent will work with permanent finishes and nearby furnishings.
- Check practical specifications. Review upholstery care, support or adjustment features, charging needs and—where relevant—outdoor suitability using the manufacturer’s information.
- Keep the evidence in perspective. A designer expectation or a report on market introductions can explain a design moment; neither establishes that it led furniture sales.
A rounded bouclé accent chair is one way to echo the period’s combination of curved forms and tactile upholstery. Before buying, check its dimensions, upholstery-care instructions and construction details; the trend coverage does not establish the performance of any particular model.
