You can grow useful culinary herbs indoors, but success depends less on a rigid watering calendar than on giving each plant enough light, a pot that drains, and care matched to its needs. Start with a few herbs you use often, place them in your brightest practical spot, and add a grow light if the window cannot support steady growth.
What herbs grow well indoors?
Begin with a small group rather than trying to grow every herb at once. Penn State Extension names chives, basil, and cilantro as good indoor choices; Illinois Extension also lists oregano, parsley, and thyme among herbs commonly grown indoors. Choose based on your available light, space, and cooking habits. Their needs differ, so a plant that thrives in one spot may struggle beside another.

Large-rooted herbs such as horseradish, fennel, and lovage are poor fits for many indoor containers, according to Penn State Extension. Deep-rooted plants need suitably deep pots; compact herbs are easier to accommodate on a windowsill.

How do I set up an indoor herb garden?
Choose pots and potting mix that drain
Use containers with drainage holes and a prepared potting mix that lets excess water escape. Do not use garden soil in containers: Illinois Extension advises against it for container herbs. Set pots on saucers to catch runoff, but empty standing water rather than leaving roots submerged. A separate pot for each herb makes it easier to give plants different amounts of water and to isolate one if pests appear. A shared container can work if it has enough room and the plants have compatible watering needs.

Choose seeds or established plants
Seeds suit gardeners who are comfortable waiting for plants to mature; established starter plants offer a quicker route to harvesting. The extension guidance supports both as practical starting approaches but does not establish that one produces a better harvest than the other. Whatever the starting point, make sure the mature plant will fit its container and light conditions.
How much light do indoor herbs need?
Light is often the main constraint indoors, especially in winter. Put herbs in the brightest practical window and rotate windowsill pots periodically so growth is more even. If the spot is not bright enough to support the growth you want, supplemental lighting can help. Illinois Extension identifies winter light and humidity as major indoor growing constraints and recommends adding light when windows are inadequate.

There is no single lamp schedule that fits every bulb and arrangement. The University of Minnesota Extension suggests about 12 hours of artificial light daily. Penn State Extension’s fluorescent-light example recommends 14–16 hours. Treat these as guidance for their respective setups, not as a universal requirement; follow the light manufacturer’s instructions and adjust based on how the plants grow.

| Bright window only | You have a strong window and are comfortable with growth varying by season. | Use the brightest practical location and turn pots for more even growth. A dim winter window may not sustain vigorous growth. |

How often should I water indoor herbs?
Check the potting mix instead of watering by a fixed weekly schedule. Minnesota Extension suggests watering when the soil is dry about 1/2 inch below the surface, while warning against soggy soil. Conditions change how quickly a pot dries, so check it regularly and water when the mix begins to dry.

Herbs do not all want the same moisture level. Basil should not be allowed to dry out completely, according to Penn State; several Mediterranean herbs can benefit from drying slightly between waterings. Drain excess water from saucers, and avoid keeping any pot constantly saturated.

Keep plants away from temperature extremes
Penn State Extension’s indoor guidance gives daytime temperatures of at least 65–70°F and nighttime temperatures of 55–60°F. It also notes that basil is sensitive below 50°F. Avoid cold drafts and locations where temperatures swing sharply; needs still vary among herbs and rooms.

Balance humidity with airflow
Dry indoor air can be hard on herbs. Penn State suggests grouping containers or using a humidifier or pebble tray to raise humidity. If the air is humid and stagnant, improve airflow instead. Misting alone is not a reliable substitute for addressing the room’s humidity and circulation.
Feed lightly
Extension recommendations differ: Minnesota suggests half-strength liquid fertilizer every six weeks indoors, while Penn State describes a low dose of water-soluble fertilizer every two weeks. These are not one universal schedule. Follow the fertilizer label, use a conservative dose, and avoid overfeeding; the right approach depends on the product and growing conditions.

How do you harvest herbs so they keep growing?
Harvest in a way that leaves enough healthy growth for the plant to recover. Illinois Extension advises harvesting annual leafy herbs when flower buds first appear, leaving four to six inches of shoots. For perennial herbs, take only the top third. Regular, careful harvesting is more useful than stripping a plant bare.
How do you keep indoor herbs healthy?
Repot when roots outgrow the container
If roots grow through drainage holes, the plant may need a larger pot. Penn State identifies early spring as a useful time to repot. Choose a container with enough depth for the herb’s roots and drainage holes to let excess water escape.
Quick Recap
Check for pests
Inspect leaves and potting mix for aphids, spider mites, thrips, whiteflies, and fungus gnats. Penn State favors cultural and mechanical measures, including sticky traps for fungus gnats and removing aphid-infested growth. Wash leaves before using them in food. If you use a treatment, follow its label and any harvest instructions.
