A splatter screen can make cooking greasy foods less messy, but it will not keep every drop off the stovetop. Choose one that sits securely on the pans you use most, leaves room to stir when needed, and fits your storage space. “Splatter guard” is another common name for the same kind of pan cover.
What a splatter screen does—and what it cannot do
A flat splatter screen rests over a pan to catch some oil and food droplets while allowing steam to escape through its mesh or openings. It is a mess-reduction tool, not a sealed lid. In a reported comparison attributed to Serious Eats writer Russell Kilgore, residue remained after cooking greasy foods and tomato sauce with every screen tested. The reviewer said cleanup was easier with a screen than without one, but the test does not establish a universal performance ranking.
Mesh fineness alone is not a reliable way to predict how well a screen will control splatter: the comparison did not find fine mesh clearly superior to larger mesh. Fit, stability, access for stirring, and storage are more practical points to assess.
How to choose the right design
Match the screen to your pans
Measure the diameter across the top of the pan, then check how the screen rests on its rim. A screen that is too small may not cover the opening; one that does not sit securely or flush may be awkward to use. If your cookware varies in size, check the maker’s stated fit range rather than assuming one screen will suit every pan.

Choose mesh or a pan-side guard based on how you cook
Stainless-steel mesh screens cover the pan from above and let you lift the screen to stir. A silicone pan-side guard sits inside the pan instead, leaving the top open. Frywall says its design allows stirring without lifting a flat screen; that is a manufacturer description, not an independent comparison result. Its maker describes the product as BPA-free, FDA-compliant silicone rated up to 450°F and dishwasher safe.
Consider stirring access, handle and storage
A flat screen needs to be moved or lifted for stirring and checking food. Handle design affects how easy that is, but it also affects storage: folding handles can take up less space, while a wide screen with a long handle may be awkward to fit in a drawer. In the reported comparison, the largest screen measured 21.5 inches including its handle. That measurement describes one tested product, not a standard screen size.

A quick buying checklist
- Measure the pans you use most and confirm the screen’s stated fit.
- Check whether its rim or shape rests securely on your cookware.
- Decide whether you prefer an overhead mesh screen or a pan-side guard that leaves the top open.
- Look at handle length and whether it folds if drawer space is limited.
- Confirm the specific model’s cleaning instructions and heat rating where relevant.
- Expect less mess, not a completely clean stovetop.
