No toxicologist-approved set of four dish-soap swaps could be verified, so it would be misleading to present four products as expert-endorsed. What can be checked is more useful than a vague “non-toxic” claim: the exact product’s label, its current certification status, and what the certification actually evaluates.
What “non-toxic” tells you—and what it doesn’t
“Non-toxic” is not a legal product category or, by itself, a government certification. Treat it as a marketing phrase unless the company explains the criteria behind it. A product described that way is not thereby proven harmless in every use, and the phrase does not tell you how the soap performs or how its ingredients were evaluated.
For a more concrete check, look for a named program and verify that the exact dish-soap product or variant is currently listed. A certification applies within the program’s scope; it is not a promise of zero risk or an endorsement that you should buy the product.
What EPA Safer Choice establishes for hand dish soap
EPA’s 2023 proposed Safer Choice and Design for the Environment standard includes a category for hand dish soap. Under the proposed standard, products in that category must meet user requirements in HCPA DCC-10 and DCC-18, or an equivalent method agreed upon by EPA. The standard also specifies a pH range of 2 through 11.5, with provisions intended to minimize potential dermal and eye irritation or injury.
#1 Best Overall
- Plant-based formula liquid soap fights grease and powers through tough, dried-on food
- Dishwashing soap with 0% dyes and artificial fragrances
- Fresh Lime & Ginger dish soap liquid, made from 100% essential oils and botanical ingredients
- 100% recycled bottle
- EPA Safer Choice Certified Product, USDA Certified Biobased Product 95% free and clear dish liquid soap
Those criteria describe the program’s evaluation scope—not a guarantee that a soap cannot irritate anyone, and not evidence that every product using reassuring language meets the standard. Check EPA’s current listing for the exact product before relying on a Safer Choice claim; the 2023 proposal alone does not establish a product’s present status.
Four practical checks before switching
- Identify the exact variant. “Unscented,” “Free & Clear,” and a brand name are not interchangeable product records. Match the listing to the name on the bottle.
- Read the current ingredient label. An online ingredient record can help, but formulas and records may change. Use the bottle in hand as the check on what is being sold now.
- Verify any certification at product level. Search the program’s current records for the exact variant rather than inferring status from a brand’s other products or from a general claim on a roundup page.
- Separate a safety claim from a performance claim. Certification criteria do not establish comparative cleaning performance. Do not assume one dish soap cleans better than another without product-specific comparative evidence.
One documented example: ECOS Dish Soap, Free & Clear
EWG maintains a product-level record for ECOS Dish Soap, Free & Clear that includes product information and a label ingredient list. That makes it a concrete example to investigate if you are looking for a fragrance-free dish soap. The listing is evidence of a record for that specific variant; it is not proof that every ECOS formula is identical or universally harmless. Check the current bottle and listing together.

Why other familiar alternatives need a product-level check
Secondary roundups have named Seventh Generation Free & Clear Dish Liquid and ATTITUDE Super Leaves Dish Soap in an unscented variant. The available evidence does not confirm current certification or formula details for those exact variants through primary product records. Do not treat those mentions as verified recommendations or as proof that the products are currently certified.
The same caution applies to the headline promise of toxicologist approval: no toxicologist, relevant credentials, or attributable endorsement for four specific swaps was established. Without that information, the responsible choice is to evaluate specific products against their labels and current certification records, rather than repeat an unverified expert endorsement.
