Compare PSA and membrane systems at that exact operating point—not by maximum purity or a headline flow rating—and size the complete compressed-air-to-nitrogen installation, including air treatment, storage, power, ventilation and maintenance. There is no universal generator size or purity that suits every workshop or industrial site.
Start with the process requirement
Before comparing equipment, document what the nitrogen must do at the point of use. A generator’s nominal capacity is meaningful only when its purity, pressure and test conditions match your requirement. A nitrogen flow figure by itself cannot show whether a system will meet a real process demand; Lingyu likewise cautions that selection should not be based on flow alone (Lingyu selection guidance).

Specify purity as a process limit
Write down the required nitrogen purity or maximum residual oxygen concentration the process can tolerate. Where the process is controlled by a residual-oxygen limit, state that limit rather than assuming a supplier’s purity percentage is an interchangeable specification. Confirm how the supplier measures and reports purity, and whether the stated value applies at the generator outlet or at the process connection.

Higher purity can affect generator output and compressed-air demand, so an unnecessary purity target may lead to a larger or more costly system than the process needs. Ask suppliers to quote performance at the specified purity, not simply the unit’s maximum purity.

Describe demand over time
Record both average and peak nitrogen demand. Note whether use is continuous, intermittent, variable, or concentrated in short bursts, and provide the expected duty cycle and annual operating hours. Include expected production growth if it is part of the planning horizon. A system sized to an average can struggle to serve peaks unless generation capacity, storage and pressure behavior are designed together.
State the flow units and reference conditions you want suppliers to use. Standard and normal cubic measures may be tied to different reference conditions, so figures presented in different units or under different conditions should not be compared as if they were equivalent. Ask each bidder to identify the conditions behind every quoted flow rate.
Include pressure and gas quality
Specify the required nitrogen outlet pressure at the equipment and the pressure needed at the process after distribution losses. Identify any dew-point, moisture, oil, particulate or other contamination limits imposed by the application. Also document the available feed-air conditions and electrical service. These inputs interact: generator capacity and compressed-air use depend on operating conditions, so a catalog rating alone is not a guarantee of site performance (Lingyu product and selection guidance).
Recommended Free Tools
Be explicit about where each requirement applies. A generator may produce gas at one pressure and purity at its outlet, while the process connection has a different pressure requirement and may experience changing demand. Ask the supplier to identify the rated operating point and explain how the proposed piping, buffer and controls preserve delivery at the point of use.
Choose PSA or membrane technology at the required operating point
Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) and membrane generators both separate nitrogen from compressed air. Their attainable purity, output, pressure behavior, feed-air requirements and system configuration vary by design and model. Neither technology is automatically the right choice for every workshop or industrial process.
What to compare in a PSA system
For a PSA proposal, ask for the nitrogen output and feed-air demand at the required purity, outlet pressure and site conditions. Do not treat higher purity as a free upgrade. BERG’s published NITROBERG 500 model table, for example, lists 10.7 Nm³/h at 97% purity and 2.2 Nm³/h at 99.99% purity; the table also shows compressed-air factors rising to 6.4 at 99.999% purity. The 2.2 Nm³/h figure is paired with a compressed-air factor of 4.6. These are manufacturer figures for that model under its table conditions, not general PSA performance guarantees (BERG NITROBERG model data).
The practical implication is to evaluate the generator and compressor together. Ask the supplier to state the nitrogen output, purity, outlet pressure and corresponding feed-air demand in the same proposal, then confirm that the proposed compressor and air-treatment train can deliver that feed air.

What to compare in a membrane system
Membrane performance is likewise model- and operating-point-specific. Parker’s March 2022 manual for its N2-120/160/240 models describes purity from 95% to 99.5%, with purity up to 99.9% available at significantly reduced flow. For those models, the manual says the listed flow represents approximate output at 97% purity and 100 psig (6.9 barg) outlet pressure, with approximately 110–115 psig inlet pressure required (Parker N2-120/160/240 manual, March 2022). Those figures apply to the named models, not to membrane generators as a category.

Compare equivalent proposals
Request current performance curves or a written performance schedule for each candidate at your required purity, flow and pressure. Include any expected variation in demand, startup behavior, turndown, redundancy and buffer response. If a supplier provides only a maximum-purity figure or a flow figure at a different purity or pressure, ask for the rating at your actual requirement before comparing bids.
Technology labels alone do not settle the choice. Compare the available system configuration and how it responds to your operating profile: continuous versus intermittent use, changes in demand, startup needs, and whether backup capacity or redundancy is required. Ask how those conditions affect output, feed-air demand and the pressure available to the process. Where more than one proposal meets the process limit, compare maintenance needs, service coverage, floor space and lifecycle cost as well as rated gas quality.

Size the complete air-to-nitrogen installation
A nitrogen generator is one part of a system. The installation may also require a compressor, air receiver, water separation, coalescing and other filtration, a dryer, oil-vapor reduction, dust filtration, nitrogen buffer or storage, and a connection to the process. Parker’s typical PSA configuration illustrates these components as part of an integrated arrangement (Parker typical PSA nitrogen generator configuration, May 2022).
Check feed-air capacity and treatment
Confirm the generator’s feed-air demand at the nitrogen purity and output you need. The compressor must supply the required air quantity at the required pressure without undermining other site uses. Ask the supplier to state the assumptions used for compressor sizing and energy estimates, including the expected operating pressure and air quality.
Air treatment must suit the actual compressor, generator design and application. Verify allowable feed-air pressure, temperature, moisture, oil, particles and other contaminants against the selected equipment manual. Filtration and drying requirements can differ with the adsorbent or membrane and the process; do not assume a generic treatment train is adequate. Lingyu’s selection guidance identifies feed-air conditions and dew point among the relevant inputs, and notes that capacity and compressed-air use depend on operating conditions (Lingyu selection guidance).
Make the proposal traceable from process demand back to the air supply. Ask for the stated nitrogen output and the corresponding feed-air quantity, pressure and quality, then check that the compressor, receiver and treatment equipment are included in the scope or confirmed as suitable existing equipment. If the site compressor also serves other tools or processes, include those loads in the capacity review rather than assuming all rated compressor output is available to the generator.
Plan buffers around demand and pressure
A nitrogen buffer or storage vessel can help the system serve fluctuations, but its size should follow the demand profile and pressure behavior. Give the supplier the timing and size of demand peaks, the required delivery pressure, and the pressure variation the process can tolerate. Ask how the proposed generator, buffer and controls will respond during a peak rather than relying on a generic storage rule.

Confirm the installation scope
Make sure the proposal identifies who supplies and connects each component, including compressor, receiver, separation and filtration equipment, dryer, generator, nitrogen storage, controls and distribution tie-in. Clarify which equipment is existing and which is new, and whether commissioning, training and acceptance testing are included. A generator-only price does not establish the cost or capability of a complete air-to-nitrogen system.
Check site readiness and safety before ordering
Review the proposed installation location and the full route for air, nitrogen and vent lines before equipment is selected. Confirm electrical service, floor space, service access for filters, noise conditions, ventilation, safe routing of blow-off and relief vents, and any monitoring needed by the site. Include the compressor and treatment train in the space and noise review, not just the generator cabinet.
Assess oxygen hazards
Nitrogen can displace oxygen and create an oxygen-deficient atmosphere. Generator exhaust or leaks can also create oxygen-enriched conditions, which bring different hazards. AIGA’s guidance on PSA and membrane oxygen/nitrogen generators calls for attention to both conditions. For indoor PSA installations it recommends adequate ventilation, oxygen-concentration alarms, or both; it also calls for safe vent discharge and leak testing, particularly indoors (AIGA 060/09, Safe Installation and Operation of PSA and Membrane O2/N2 Generators).
Use a site-specific hazard assessment to determine ventilation, monitoring, vent locations, operator training and other safeguards. Follow local requirements and the selected equipment’s manual; a general summary cannot replace either. Do not route vents into occupied areas or assume that an apparently small installation has no atmosphere risk.
Account for noise and service access
Compressors, valves, purge cycles and process flows can contribute to noise. AIGA notes that noise may require abatement or hearing protection under applicable rules. Check the site’s noise requirements and the manufacturer’s operating information before deciding where to place equipment. Leave enough access to perform filter service and routine inspections safely.
Compare installed and lifecycle cost
Compare proposals on a complete-system basis, not just the generator purchase price. Include compressor electricity, air-treatment equipment, nitrogen storage, installation, maintenance, filter service, commissioning and any required monitoring or ventilation work. Also compare these costs with the current delivered-nitrogen arrangement using your actual consumption and local prices.
Compressed-air generation can be a primary operating expense. Atlas Copco notes that electricity for the compressor is a major cost and that payback depends on nitrogen consumption and local energy prices; a generic payback period should not be treated as a promise for a particular site (Atlas Copco, PSA nitrogen generator and operating-cost guidance).
Request energy and maintenance assumptions in writing. A useful comparison identifies expected compressor operation at the required purity and flow, service tasks and consumables, and any assumptions about annual operating hours or site utility costs. If bids use different flow reference conditions, purity points or system boundaries, normalize those assumptions before comparing lifecycle costs.

For a fair comparison with delivered nitrogen, use the site’s present consumption and local delivered-gas prices, and define which costs are inside each option’s boundary. An on-site system proposal should account for the compression and treatment equipment it needs, as well as service and installation. A delivered-gas comparison should use the actual current arrangement. The result depends on local energy prices, nitrogen use and the chosen system; there is no single payback period that can be promised to every buyer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prepare a supplier-ready specification
A clear request for quotation helps suppliers size equipment against the same process conditions and makes proposals easier to evaluate. Provide the following information and ask bidders to return their assumptions alongside their recommendation.
- Required nitrogen purity or maximum residual oxygen at the process, and how it is to be measured.
- Average and peak flow, units, reference conditions, timing of peaks and expected duty cycle.
- Required pressure at the generator outlet and at the point of use.
- Continuous, intermittent or variable operation; annual operating hours; startup expectations; and any redundancy requirement.
- Gas dew-point, moisture, oil, particulate and other contamination limits.
- Available feed-air pressure, temperature, quality and compressor capacity, plus electrical service.
- Installation location, floor-space constraints, ventilation, vent discharge route, noise limits and service access.
- Expected changes in demand and the planning period for possible expansion.
Ask each supplier to state the selected technology and model, guaranteed or rated output at the specified purity and pressure, flow reference conditions, feed-air demand, compressor assumptions, treatment requirements, buffer rationale, power estimates, installation scope, maintenance needs and service coverage. Require commissioning and acceptance criteria that define how purity, flow and pressure will be checked at the agreed operating point.
To make bids easier to compare, ask suppliers to identify any exclusions or assumptions that could change performance or price. For example, have them distinguish a generator rating from a complete-system rating, state which existing air equipment they have relied on, and explain how the system handles your stated peak demand. A written response that uses the same units and reference conditions as your request is more useful than a generic catalog selection.
Use acceptance testing to close the specification gap
Before purchase, agree how the installed system will demonstrate that it meets the process requirement. The acceptance plan should name the measurement locations, operating conditions, required purity, flow and pressure, and the method for handling a failed test. It should also distinguish the generator’s rating from conditions at the process connection, where distribution and demand behavior may affect delivery.
Keep the final manuals, operating limits, maintenance instructions and site safety procedures with the installation records. Routine upkeep may include inlet-filter replacement, checking pressure, temperature and dew-point instrumentation, and servicing oil-removal filtration where relevant. Maintenance intervals and consumables depend on the selected equipment, so confirm the schedule with its supplier rather than applying one universal interval (Atlas Copco maintenance guidance).
Ask the supplier to hand over the operating conditions used for commissioning, along with the maintenance tasks, consumables and service contacts. This gives operators a reference for routine checks and makes it easier to identify whether later changes in process demand or feed-air conditions have moved the installation away from its intended operating point.
Common selection mistakes to avoid
- Buying by maximum purity: Specify the process limit and compare output and air demand at that purity.
- Comparing unmatched flow ratings: Check purity, outlet pressure, units and reference conditions behind each figure.
- Sizing only for average demand: Include peak timing and pressure response, then size generation and buffering together.
- Ignoring the compressor and treatment train: Confirm feed-air demand and required air quality for the actual generator model.
- Comparing generator prices instead of system costs: Include compression energy, installation, service, storage and site work.
- Treating ventilation as an afterthought: Review oxygen hazards, vent discharge, monitoring and leak testing before fixing the equipment location.
- Assuming all equipment uses the same maintenance schedule: Confirm filter and oil-removal service intervals, instrumentation checks and consumables for the selected system.
- Accepting an undefined performance claim: Put purity, flow, pressure, reference conditions and the test point into the proposal and acceptance plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose a nitrogen generator for my workshop?
Start with the process requirement: nitrogen purity or maximum residual oxygen, average and peak flow, outlet and point-of-use pressure, operating profile, dew point and contamination limits. Then compare PSA and membrane proposals at that operating point and evaluate the complete installation, including compression, air treatment, buffering, power, ventilation and service.

What size nitrogen generator do I need?
There is no universal size. Provide suppliers with average and peak demand, the timing and duration of peaks, required purity, pressure, duty cycle, annual operating hours and expected expansion. Ask them to size generation and buffering together and state the flow reference conditions and feed-air demand behind their recommendation.
Is a PSA or membrane nitrogen generator better?
Neither is automatically better for every application. Compare the actual candidate models at the purity, flow and pressure your process needs, including feed-air demand, operating behavior, air-treatment requirements, footprint, maintenance and lifecycle cost. Published performance for one model should not be assumed to apply to an entire technology category.
Does choosing higher nitrogen purity reduce generator output?
It can. The BERG NITROBERG 500 model table lists 10.7 Nm³/h at 97% and 2.2 Nm³/h at 99.99%, with a compressed-air factor of 4.6 at 99.99% and factors rising to 6.4 at 99.999%. These are model-specific manufacturer figures, but they illustrate why the required purity and the corresponding output and air demand should be quoted together.

What should a nitrogen generator quote include?
Request the selected technology and model, output at the specified purity and pressure, flow reference conditions, feed-air demand and compressor assumptions, air-treatment requirements, buffer rationale, power estimates, installation scope, maintenance tasks, service coverage and commissioning or acceptance criteria. It should also identify exclusions and any assumptions about existing site equipment.
How much does it cost to run an on-site nitrogen generator?
Operating cost depends on the system, site conditions, nitrogen consumption and local energy prices. Include compressor electricity, routine maintenance and filter service in the comparison, alongside installed-system costs and current delivered-nitrogen costs. Atlas Copco identifies compressor electricity as a primary operating expense; a generic payback period is not a reliable promise for an individual site.
What safety checks are needed for an indoor installation?
Assess both oxygen-deficient and oxygen-enriched atmosphere risks, ventilation, safe vent discharge, leak testing, monitoring and operator training. AIGA 060/09 recommends adequate ventilation, oxygen-concentration alarms, or both for indoor PSA installations. Follow the selected equipment manual, site-specific hazard review and applicable local requirements.
How often does a nitrogen generator need maintenance?
There is no single maintenance interval established for every model. Upkeep may include scheduled inlet-filter replacement, checking pressure, temperature and dew-point instrumentation, and servicing oil-removal filtration when relevant. Confirm the interval and consumables with the equipment supplier.
