How to Find Out Whether a Business Is Affected by a Planned Construction Project

Check local roadworks registers, project pages and planning portals to find proposed work near your business, then verify access, deliveries, dates and updates directly with the responsible authority or project team.

Search the local authority’s roadworks or street works records and planning portal, then check the project owner’s website for the work schedule, access arrangements and contact details. Use your business address, nearby streets or postcode—not just a project name—and contact the responsible authority, utility or project team if a listing does not explain how customers, deliveries or staff will be affected. Do not assume you will receive advance notice: notification practices vary by location and by the expected disruption.

Start with the kind of project you are looking for

“Construction near my business” can mean roadworks, utility work, a nearby development application or a major infrastructure scheme. These projects may be recorded in different places, so search more than one channel if you are unsure what is planned.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Road or utility works: check your local authority’s roadworks map, street works register or works notices. The work may be managed by the authority or by a utility.
  • A named infrastructure scheme: search the project owner’s or builder’s official project page. Look for construction stages, maps, schedules, access plans, updates and a named contact.
  • A nearby building or land development: search the local planning authority’s application portal for your address, nearby streets and neighbouring sites. Review the application documents, plans and consultation information.
  • A large infrastructure proposal: check the project’s consultation site and the relevant official process for your jurisdiction. In the UK, nationally significant infrastructure projects have specific consultation and examination stages.

A project may appear in more than one place. A planning application can identify a proposed development before construction begins, while a roadworks register may show separate works needed to connect utilities or manage traffic.

Where to search for planned work

Local roadworks maps and street works registers

Search the local authority website for terms such as “roadworks,” “street works,” “road closures” or “planned works.” Some authorities let you search by road, neighbourhood or postcode. For example, the Royal Borough of Greenwich says its register can be searched by road, area or postcode and includes work type, utility, location, planned dates and an impact category. The fields available elsewhere may differ.

Check both the map and any detailed listing. A map pin can show that work is nearby without explaining whether a footpath, loading bay or access road will be affected. Open the record and note the work description, dates, responsible organisation and impact information.

Project owner or builder pages

If you know the project name, search for its official page. Business Queensland’s guidance on preparing for major infrastructure work points businesses to project information and encourages them to sign up for updates. A project page may explain construction phases, access, impacts and whom to contact. If you do not know the name, search the authority’s website using the street, postcode or local area first.

Public works project pages

Some municipalities and regions publish their own construction projects separately from roadworks registers. The Region of Durham in Canada, for example, directs businesses to search its public works projects by location and provides a route to project details and supervisor contact information. Such pages are generally limited to projects managed by that authority, so they are not a substitute for checking utilities or other project owners.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Planning and consultation portals

Search the local planning portal for your business address, nearby land parcels and relevant streets. A nearby application may be filed under a property address rather than a familiar project name. Review the proposal description, site plans, construction or transport documents, notices and consultation dates; the application summary alone may not answer access questions.

In England, publicity requirements depend on the type of application. National planning guidance describes publication on the authority’s website and, for specified categories, neighbour notification, site notices or newspaper advertisements. Do not assume one publicity method applies to every application. For a nationally significant infrastructure proposal, check its own consultation material and the stages described by the Planning Inspectorate and GOV.UK.

Use a repeatable search process

A systematic search is more reliable than a single web search for the words “construction” and your town. Start with the exact business address, then search the street name, nearby intersections, postcode and neighbouring land parcels. Try spelling variations and the names of nearby roads because a works record may use a different address from the one customers know.

  1. Search the council or municipal site. Look for roadworks, street works, highways, transportation, public works and traffic-management pages. Save the map or record URL for every plausible result.
  2. Search utilities and infrastructure owners. If the record names a water, electricity, telecommunications or transport organisation, open that organisation’s project page as well. It may publish a fuller schedule or a separate customer-contact route.
  3. Search planning records separately. Use the planning portal’s map or address search, not only its keyword box. Open applications for adjacent sites and read their plans, construction statements and transport documents.
  4. Compare overlapping records. A planning application may describe a long development programme, while a roadworks record may cover only one short utility connection. Treat them as related but separate entries until the responsible organisation confirms otherwise.
  5. Set a reminder to search again. A blank result today does not prove that no work is planned. Dates, project names and records can appear as design and approvals progress.

When a site offers an email alert, mailing list or project update subscription, use it. Keep the confirmation and the contact details with your business records so another manager can continue monitoring the project.

Compare the discovery routes

Where to look Best suited to What it may tell you What to watch for
Project owner or builder page A named infrastructure scheme Construction stages, schedules, impacts, updates and contacts You may not know the project name, and a published schedule can change.
Local authority roadworks map or street works register Road and utility work Location, work type, responsible utility, planned dates and sometimes an impact category Available fields and notification practices differ by authority.
Public works project page Municipal or regional construction Project details and sometimes a supervisor contact; some pages support location searches It may cover only projects managed by that authority.
Planning portal or major-project consultation site Nearby development or a major infrastructure proposal Application documents, plans, consultation details and ways to comment Procedures, publicity and deadlines depend on the jurisdiction and project.
Direct enquiry to an authority, utility or project contact An unclear listing or a likely operational impact Clarification of timing, access and responsibility for follow-up You may need to identify the right organisation and ask more than one contact.

Check what the work means for your operations

Distance from the site is not a reliable measure of disruption. Work farther away can alter the route customers or suppliers use; work close by may leave your entrance and deliveries unaffected. Use the plans and work description to check the operating details that matter to your business.

  • Customer access and visibility: Will people be able to reach the entrance on foot, by bicycle and by car? Could hoardings, equipment or diversions obscure the shopfront or signage?
  • Road access and diversions: Are there closures, one-way changes, restricted turns or altered routes? Check whether access remains available from another direction.
  • Deliveries and servicing: Can delivery vehicles reach the loading area at the times you need? Ask about temporary loading arrangements, vehicle restrictions and access for waste collection or other service providers.
  • Parking and public transport: Could nearby parking spaces, bus stops or pedestrian routes move or become unavailable?
  • Work dates and hours: Identify the planned start and finish dates, the phase that affects your frontage, and any work outside normal hours. A project’s overall duration may not match the period of disruption at your site.
  • Noise, dust and vibration: Check what work is planned near the premises and when. If your business depends on quiet, clean or vibration-sensitive conditions, explain that to the project contact.
  • Utilities: Ask whether water, power or other services could be interrupted, and whether any interruption has a proposed date or duration.
  • Staff access: Consider changes to walking, cycling, driving and public transport routes, including access for staff with mobility needs.

Record the specific phase, street segment and dates that appear relevant to your premises. If the information only describes the overall project, ask which stage reaches your block and whether the access plan changes during that stage.

Read records critically

A “planned” date is not necessarily a guaranteed start date. Construction can be divided into stages, and the dates in a planning application, a roadworks register and a contractor update may describe different parts of the work. Record the date on which you checked each page and ask which information is current.

Impact categories also require interpretation. A listing that does not mention a road closure may still involve a narrowed lane, temporary traffic lights, an altered footway or restricted loading. Conversely, a project marked as nearby may be outside your frontage and have no effect on your entrance. Ask for the traffic-management or access arrangement rather than relying on distance or a short label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether the listing covers enabling works, utility connections, demolition, main construction and reinstatement separately. Those stages may have different contractors, working hours and access arrangements. If the page has a map, compare its boundary with your entrance, delivery point, parking area and staff route.

Contact the right organisation before plans are final

Use the contact named on the project page or works record. Depending on the work, that may be a project manager, community engagement contact, local authority or utility. If the listing names a contractor but gives no route for business enquiries, ask the authority or infrastructure owner who is responsible for business concerns and schedule updates.

Make the enquiry concrete. Explain where your entrance and loading point are, your operating hours, delivery requirements, customer access needs and any dependency on continuous utility service. Then ask:

  • Which construction phase affects this address, and what are the current dates and working hours?
  • Will pedestrian access, vehicle access, deliveries, parking or public transport change? What alternative arrangements are planned?
  • Could water, power or another service be interrupted, and how will affected businesses be notified?
  • What mitigation or business support is planned, and who can resolve an access problem during the work?
  • How can the business receive updates, and where will changes to dates or traffic arrangements be posted?

For a proposal still in planning or consultation, use the published process to raise concerns about access, servicing or other operational needs. In England, publicity and consultation procedures vary with application type; for nationally significant infrastructure, consult the project’s official material for the applicable stages and opportunities to have your say.

Do not rely on a letter arriving

Advance notification is not a universal guarantee. Kent County Council says it plans its roadworks programme in advance and gives as much notice as possible to local businesses and residents, but also says that minor work without road closures may not be notified in advance. The council says street signs are put up 2 to 4 weeks before work begins; that timing is Kent’s local practice, not a general standard.

Dorset Council likewise states that there is no universal advance-notice requirement and that notification depends on disruption. These local examples show why businesses should check the process for their own area rather than apply one council’s practice elsewhere. Even where a council does notify some businesses, the threshold and method may depend on the work.

Check official listings proactively, especially when you hear about work informally or see early site activity. If you receive a notice, compare it with the project page and ask whether it covers every phase that could affect access to your premises.

Track changes and prepare for confirmed impacts

Dates, traffic arrangements and work phases can change. Sign up for project updates where available, keep the project contact’s details and revisit the official page as work approaches. Business Queensland specifically advises: “Sign up for project updates to keep your business informed on project developments.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once an impact is confirmed, tell the people who need to plan around it: staff, suppliers, customers and, where relevant, your landlord. Consider whether adjusted delivery times, customer notices, temporary wayfinding or revised operating arrangements would help. If signage may be useful, first confirm which access routes are actually changing and check local rules for where signs may be placed. A temporary “business open during construction” sign or directional sign can help only when customers can still reach the premises and the placement is permitted.

Keep a simple record of notices, enquiries, replies, schedule changes and the dates when access or services are affected. Include photographs or maps only where they help explain the entrance or delivery problem. This gives you a clear reference when seeking an update or explaining a practical problem to the project team. The official guidance cited here does not establish a general right to compensation for business disruption; do not assume that a project notice or an impact record guarantees payment.

What to do when information conflicts

If the roadworks register, project page and a letter show different dates, ask the named authority or project contact which schedule controls the next phase at your address. Request confirmation in writing where possible and ask where subsequent changes will be posted. Do not treat an old notice as proof that work has been cancelled or that access will remain unchanged.

If no one accepts responsibility, start with the local authority that maintains the road or planning record and provide the work location, record reference and your specific access concern. The authority can usually identify whether the work belongs to a utility, contractor or public project team. You may need to contact more than one organisation when a development, road closure and utility diversion overlap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A quick checklist

  1. Search the local authority’s roadworks or street works records using your address, street or postcode.
  2. Search the authority’s public works and planning pages, then check the project owner’s official site if you identify a named scheme.
  3. Open the detailed listing and record the work type, responsible organisation, dates, impact information and contact.
  4. Check access, deliveries, closures, diversions, parking, public transport, working hours, noise, dust and utilities against your actual operations.
  5. Ask the responsible contact about unclear phases, mitigation, update channels and business access arrangements.
  6. Subscribe to updates where possible, share confirmed changes with affected people and check again as the work approaches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the council automatically tell my business about planned roadworks?

Not necessarily. Kent County Council says it gives as much notice as possible but may not notify businesses about minor work without road closures. Dorset Council says advance notification depends on disruption. Check your own authority’s records and process.

How far in advance should I check?

Check as soon as you hear about a proposal and repeat the search as work approaches. Dates and phases can change, and a project may appear first in a planning portal before roadworks are registered.

What if I cannot find the project by name?

Search with the business address, nearby streets, postcode, neighbouring land parcels and local area. Then ask the authority or utility to identify the project from the road, location or works-record details.

What should I ask the project contact?

Ask which phase affects your address, the current dates and hours, changes to pedestrian and vehicle access, delivery arrangements, parking and public transport, possible utility interruptions, mitigation, and where updates will be posted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a nearby project mean I can claim compensation?

The guidance covered here does not establish a general right to compensation for business disruption. Keep records of impacts, but check the applicable local rules and project terms rather than assuming payment is available.

The Bottom Line

Use your address, street and postcode to check roadworks registers, public works pages, planning portals and project-owner updates. Confirm the exact phase, dates, access and delivery arrangements directly with the responsible organisation, subscribe to updates and prepare only after the practical impact on your business is clear.
