How to Choose a Circular Saw Blade for Plywood, Hardwood, and Framing

Match circular saw blade compatibility first, then choose a construction or finer-tooth example based on the material, cut direction, and finish you need.

Choose a circular-saw blade by matching it to the saw first, then to the material, cut direction, and finish you need. A lower-tooth-count construction blade is a practical example for rough framing; finer-tooth blades are better-supported examples for finish-grade plywood and hardwood crosscuts. Tooth count alone does not guarantee a particular result, and the examples below are not universal prescriptions.

Check that the blade fits your saw

Before comparing tooth counts, confirm the blade diameter and arbor match the saw. Check the saw manual and blade packaging for permitted plate thickness, kerf, and other compatibility limits. A blade listing for one saw model does not establish that it fits another.

For example, Makita lists a 5/8-inch arbor for its 7-1/4-inch D-45989 blade. Its 6-1/2-inch B-07353 is identified as a plunge-saw blade for a compatible Makita plunge saw. These are model-specific details, not general compatibility rules.

Match the blade to the material and cut

Framing and rough construction

For rough framing, a lower-tooth-count blade is a common construction-oriented option. Makita describes its 7-1/4-inch, 24-tooth D-45989 as a framing/general-purpose blade for rough framing lumber, plywood, OSB, and engineered lumber. That description applies to this model; it does not establish that every 24-tooth blade performs the same way.

Plywood where the finish matters

DEWALT’s DCS520 instruction manual advises, “Use a fine-tooth blade for cutting plywood.” DEWALT describes its 6-1/2-inch, 60-tooth DWA261260 as making smooth cuts in finish-grade plywood. Makita lists its 6-1/2-inch, 48-tooth B-07353 for plywood ripping with the compatible SP6000J plunge saw.

Hardwood crosscuts

For hardwood crosscuts, DEWALT lists the DWA261260, while Makita names hardwood and fine-crosscut applications for the B-07353. These manufacturer-listed applications support those specific examples; they do not identify one best tooth count for every hardwood species, rip cut, crosscut, or saw.

Use more than tooth count to decide

When choosing between blades that fit, weigh the material and cut direction, the finish you want, tooth count and grind, kerf, and the manufacturer’s stated applications. A fine-tooth description or a higher tooth count is useful guidance for finish-oriented work, but tooth count by itself does not determine cut quality. Start with the saw maker’s limits and select a blade whose listed use matches the job.
