To check Wisconsin road construction, closures, and detours, open 511WI, enable the Roadwork and Closures map layers, and select the map features on your route for details. For a project with its own page, use the Wisconsin 511 Construction Projects site to view its regional map and, when available, closure and travel-time tables. Check again shortly before leaving: the route planner may not include every construction, incident, or weather-related closure.
You can check the map, route planner, and searchable lists without creating an account. An account is useful if you want to save a route and set up notifications for it. For a one-time trip, start with the map and Roadwork list; for a major project, add its project page to your check.

Start with the 511WI map
The main 511WI map is useful for a first check because it puts roadwork and closures in their geographic context. You can inspect the roads near your origin, destination, and likely route rather than relying only on a turn-by-turn suggestion. It also gives you a way to compare a possible alternate route with the route you initially planned.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open 511WI.
- Use the map legend to turn on Roadwork and Closures. If you need broader context, other available layers include incidents, traffic speeds, cameras, special events, flooding, message signs, weather alerts, and forecasts.
- Look along your intended route and select relevant map items to open their details. Check both the main highway and roads you might use as alternatives.
- Read the location, direction, description, and detour information for each relevant event. Compare those details with your trip rather than treating a marker alone as proof that a specific lane or direction is affected.
Map layers help you find possible conflicts, but the event details are what tell you what the map item represents. A closure symbol, for example, may concern a direction or location that does not affect your planned movement; confirm the description before changing your route. Likewise, a marker near a road does not tell you by itself how much of the road is affected. Open it and read the listed information.

- Carpenter Pencils with Sharpener: The sharpener is screwed into the top of the work pencil, which won't get lost either. Built-in pencil sharpener that keep the lead with pointed and smooth to Improves line of sight in fine work
- Stronger Solid Lead: This work pencil is matched with a 2.8 mm thick lead , which is much thicker and stronger during the drawing process of construction work, it will not break or damage easily
- Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons
Use the additional layers when they answer a specific question. Incidents and traffic speeds can add context to a route check; cameras can help you view conditions at locations where cameras are available. Message signs, weather alerts, forecasts, flooding, and special events can also be relevant to the trip. These layers complement the Roadwork and Closures layers rather than replacing them: seeing traffic information is not the same as confirming the details of a listed work zone or detour.
Use the Roadwork list for dates and detour details
The Roadwork page provides a sortable and searchable list, a useful companion to the map when you already know a county, roadway, or other term to look for. Its displayed fields include county, roadway, type, direction, location, description, detour information, planned start and end dates, and a map. If you are looking for a particular corridor, the list can make it easier to find entries than scanning the full map.
How to read an entry
- County and roadway: Check that the listing refers to the place and road you intend to use.
- Direction and location: Match the affected direction and location to your trip. A work zone on a road does not automatically mean both directions or the entire road are affected.
- Description and type: Use these to understand the listed work or restriction, then open the associated map item if you need geographic context.
- Detour information: Read the stated detour rather than assuming a navigation app or route planner will select it.
- Planned dates: Treat start and end dates as the schedule shown for that listing, not as a substitute for checking the current situation on the day of travel.
- Map: Use the map link or map view to relate the entry to nearby roads and your route.
The fields work best together. First confirm that the county and roadway match. Then check direction and location, since a listing can refer to a particular segment or direction rather than every part of the road. Read the description and any detour information to understand what is listed, and use the map to place it in context. The planned dates help you identify a possible conflict for a future trip, but they are not a promise that conditions will be unchanged when you arrive.
List entries change as roadwork information changes. Search or sort to narrow the results, then confirm any relevant entry against the map and recheck near departure. This is especially useful for a trip planned in advance: a listing’s planned dates can flag a possible conflict, while a later check helps determine what information is currently shown. If you do not find a clear answer in the list, inspect the map feature and any relevant project page rather than inferring that the route is clear.
Check large projects on the Construction Projects site
For a large or named project, the Wisconsin 511 Construction Projects site adds project-oriented information to the event-level map and list. Its home page organizes projects by five WisDOT regions. Select the region associated with the project, then open the project page if one is available. This is a useful next step when you know the project name or want context beyond a single roadwork listing.
What a project page can show
- Project overview and map: Use the overview to orient yourself and the map to see project information in relation to nearby routes.
- Project-specific map layers: Where provided, layers can show the project extent or stages. Availability and detail vary by project.
- Closures and travel times: When those tabs are available, their tables can be sorted by column and filtered with a search box.
- Schedules, news, and resources: Some project pages include these sections, as well as an option to sign up for updates. Not every project or project phase has every page or feature.
The project map can include real-time incidents, lane closures, message signs, and cameras; traffic speeds and winter conditions may also be available. Use those project-level views to understand how a major work zone is being managed, but do not assume every project has all layers or tabs. For a specific trip, inspect the current closure information as well as the broader project extent.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
When a closure or travel-time tab is available, treat it as a table you can investigate rather than a static summary. Sort by a column or filter with the search box to focus on entries that relate to your route. A project page may also provide schedules and news that help explain the work, but current travel decisions should still be based on the available closure and map information. The project overview is context; it does not replace checking whether a listed closure affects your direction and location.

Project pages are not universal. A project may not have every view, or a tab may not be available in a particular phase. If you cannot find a project page or a specific table, return to the main 511WI map and Roadwork list. They remain useful for checking event-level information even when a project-specific view is absent.
Plan a route and decide whether to save it
Many 511WI features—including map data, route planning, and searchable list views—are available without an account. For a temporary trip, enter your start and destination in My Routes and choose Drive or Transit. This gives you a suggested route to compare with the map information; it does not remove the need to inspect roadwork and closure details directly.
If a suggested route crosses a closure, the Help guidance says to click the route near the closure and drag a waypoint away. More than one waypoint may be needed to shape the route around the affected area. After changing the route, check it against the Roadwork and Closures layers again. A route drawn around one marker could still intersect another event or use a road with its own restriction.
For ongoing monitoring, sign in to My 511WI, create and save a route, then create a route notification. Wisconsin 511 says alerts can be set up for saved routes. This is distinct from simply checking a route once: basic map and list use does not require an account, while saving a route and receiving route notifications uses My 511WI. If you only need to plan one trip, you can use the available route and map features without setting up a saved route.
Use a route suggestion as a planning aid, not a guarantee that the route is clear. The site warns that route planning may omit some road construction, traffic incident, or weather-event closures. If the route appears to pass through a work zone, check the Roadwork and Closures information directly and review any project page that applies. If you change plans or choose an alternate road, check that alternative too; a different route is not automatically free of work or closures.

Choose the app or a phone browser
The official Wisconsin 511 mobile app is described as free. Listed features include traffic cameras, real-time highway incidents and delay updates, personalized routes, travel times, alternate routes, drive mode, a speed map, and trucker mode with truck parking and restriction information. These features may be useful when you want to check several kinds of travel information in one mobile interface.
The app is an option for viewing those features on a mobile device; the website is also sufficient for checking the map and searchable lists. Choose whichever lets you review the information safely before travel. The official app is free, and the basic 511WI map and list checking described here does not require an account. An account is needed for the saved-route and route-notification functions, not for simply opening the map or searching listings.
Drive mode and other mobile features do not make it safe to interact with the service while driving. Review the map, route, and any relevant project details before you set out, or have a passenger check while you travel. If you need to adjust a route, wait until you are safely stopped.
A practical check before a Wisconsin drive
- Locate the route: Open the 511WI map and enable Roadwork and Closures. Identify events on the route and on the roads you may use as alternatives.
- Read the event details: Confirm location, direction, description, and any detour information. If a detail is unclear from the map, look for the matching Roadwork list entry.
- Check dates and project context: Review the listed planned dates. If the work belongs to a large or named project, check its overview, map, and available closure or travel-time tabs.
- Plan, then verify: Use My Routes for a suggested route if useful, but compare it with the closure details. Adjust the route with waypoints if needed, and do not rely on routing alone to account for every closure.
- Recheck close to departure: Road and weather conditions can change rapidly. Review 511WI again before setting out, especially if the trip depends on a particular route or detour.
For a trip planned well ahead, use the Roadwork list’s planned start and end dates to spot possible conflicts and check whether a project has a page with schedules or update signups. Then make a fresh check nearer the travel time. For a shorter trip, start with the map and inspect only the events that could affect your intended direction, but still check the alternative roads you might use. In either case, use the entry details to decide whether it is relevant, not just the presence of a marker.
Understand the limits of the information
511WI is a live travel-information service, but its route planner does not necessarily include every closure caused by construction, incidents, or weather. Information on a project page may also depend on the project and its phase. For that reason, compare route guidance with map features and event details rather than treating a suggested route, planned date, or single view as conclusive.
Some roadwork entries are marked as verified by a Connected Work Zone device. That designation means a device in the field has communicated real-time work-zone information, such as its location and whether it is active. It is a specific indication about the work-zone information received from a device; it does not remove the need to read the event details and check conditions before travel.

A practical way to handle uncertainty is to compare the same trip across the map, the Roadwork entry, and the project page when one exists. These views answer related but different questions: the map shows where an item is, the listing supplies fields such as direction and planned dates, and the project page may provide broader project information or closure and travel-time tables. If a detail is not shown in one view, do not assume it is covered by another.

If you see a work-zone marker but cannot tell whether it affects your trip, open its details and match the listed direction and location to your movement. If you need dates or a detour, use the Roadwork list, where those fields are displayed. If the work is part of a large named project, look for its regional project page and any available closure or travel-time table. If route planning suggests a path through a closure, adjust it with one or more waypoints and recheck the resulting route against the map.
If none of those views resolves the question, the safest interpretation is not that the road is clear. The map, list, route planner, and project pages have different purposes, and routing may omit closures. Check again close to departure and use additional resources before deciding to travel.
