Use the AI layout as a controlled proposal, not as an approved construction document. Freeze the exact generated output and its prompt or model version, place it in the project common data environment (CDE) with a clear status, align it with the latest approved BIM models, run geometric and constructability checks, convert the applicable building code into traceable rule tests, and obtain documented approval from the responsible professionals and, where required, the authority having jurisdiction.
A clash report alone cannot prove that a layout is buildable, safe, or code-compliant. A defensible result connects every accepted element and rule outcome to a model revision, coordinate system, requirement, reviewer, date, and disposition.

Why an AI-generated layout needs controlled verification
Generative systems can produce a convincing floor plan or three-dimensional arrangement quickly, but visual plausibility is not evidence of coordination. The output may use an incorrect origin, stale dimensions, an unsuitable level datum, missing objects, or assumptions that are not recorded. It may also omit information needed for procurement, fabrication, operation, fire safety, accessibility, or permitting.
ISO 19650-4:2022 defines detailed processes and decision criteria for information exchanges intended to ensure the quality of a project information model or asset information model. Applying that discipline means treating the AI file as an information exchange with a defined status, acceptance criteria, and accountable reviewer. The CDE is the controlled location for that exchange. Autodesk University describes a CDE as the single source used to collect, manage, and disseminate project documentation, graphical models, and non-graphical data.

- Valued Carpenter Pencil Set: You will get 2 pcs solid carpenter pencils with 26 piece 2.8 mm refills, 1 replaceable sharpener, 1 plastic storage box.The complete carpenter pencils combination allows you to finish your work faster and more easily
- Deep Hole Marker Pencil: The deep-hole construction pencils adopts 45mm elongated tip design, which is more convenient to mark in the small hole or in other tight areas that other carpenter markers cannot reach
- Carpenter Pencils with Sharpener: The sharpener is screwed into the top of the work pencil, which won't get lost either. Built-in pencil sharpener that keep the lead with pointed and smooth to Improves line of sight in fine work
- Stronger Solid Lead: This work pencil is matched with a 2.8 mm thick lead , which is much thicker and stronger during the drawing process of construction work, it will not break or damage easily
- Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons
The practical consequence is a staged decision: first establish whether the AI proposal is correctly aligned and sufficiently described; then test geometry and information; then check the governing rules; finally obtain professional approval for the intended use.
Freeze the AI output before comparing anything
Capture the complete generation package
Save the native AI project, every exported file, the prompt or input brief, model and plug-in versions, generation settings, export date and time, and the person who initiated the run. If the system supports a model hash, job identifier, or immutable revision, record it. Do not overwrite the original when an error is corrected; create a new, traceable revision.
Record what the AI was asked to produce and what it was not asked to decide. For example, a layout generated from room areas may not have considered structural penetrations, equipment replacement routes, acoustic separations, or local amendments. Those omissions become explicit review assumptions rather than hidden defects.

Assign a CDE status and approval path
Upload the frozen package to the project CDE beside the authoritative models, but give it a status such as preliminary, work in progress, shared for coordination, or approved for a specified purpose. The status must state who may rely on the file and whether it can be used for construction. An AI export should not be marked suitable for construction until the required design professionals have completed their checks.
| Record to preserve | Minimum content | Decision it supports |
|---|---|---|
| AI geometry | Native file, coordination export, revision or hash, export date | Which exact geometry was reviewed |
| Generation context | Prompt or brief, model version, settings, input references | What assumptions shaped the proposal |
| Project controls | CDE status, owner, permitted use, approval route | Who may access or rely on the output |
| Review record | Reviewer, date, rule set, findings, disposition | Whether each issue was accepted, corrected, or left open |
Establish the authoritative BIM baseline
Collect the current approved information
Before opening a clash tool, assemble the latest approved architectural, structural, civil, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) models. Add the employer’s information requirements, the BIM execution plan, survey and site-control information, and the governing code, planning, zoning, accessibility, fire, energy, and utility requirements. Include approved revisions and identify superseded files so they cannot be mistaken for the baseline.
For every model, record its author, revision, issue date, intended use, coordinate system, units, level datum, and origin. Note whether a file is design intent, fabrication information, record information, or a survey reference. A model can be geometrically accurate for one purpose and unsuitable for another, so intended use belongs in the comparison record.
Reconcile coordinates, units, and levels
Do not compare an AI export until all participants agree on the project coordinates and vertical reference. Confirm shared or project-base points, rotation, unit scale, northing and easting, level elevations, and the treatment of survey and site datums. Check at least two known control points and one known level in every incoming file. Record any translation, rotation, scale conversion, or level adjustment applied to the AI model.
A visually aligned overlay can still be wrong when one model is in millimetres and another in metres, when true north is confused with project north, or when a survey datum differs from the building datum. Resolve those differences in the coordination copy while retaining each native file unchanged.
| Baseline item | Verification before federation |
|---|---|
| Architectural model | Approved revision, room and door data, levels, grids, and intended issue status |
| Structural model | Approved framing, foundations, openings, penetrations, and analytical-to-physical assumptions |
| Civil and survey data | Control points, site boundary, grades, utilities, coordinate reference, and datum |
| MEP models | Equipment, services, access zones, insulation or clearance assumptions, and system ownership |
| Project requirements | Employer’s information requirements, BIM execution plan, and permitted exchange formats |
| Regulatory inputs | Jurisdiction, adopted code edition, amendments, planning constraints, and project classifications |
Exchange and align the models
Keep native files and coordination copies
Use the project’s agreed exchange protocol and preserve both the native authoring file and the exported coordination copy. Autodesk Model Coordination documentation lists support for RVT, DWG, NWC, and IFC models. The export is useful for federation, but it can omit authoring-system behaviour, parameters, or links. Keep the native source available for any finding that requires a design change.

Federate in a repeatable sequence
- Set the federation rules. Define the file naming convention, revision convention, coordinate reference, units, level mapping, and which models are included in each discipline package.
- Load the approved baseline first. Federate architectural, structural, civil, and MEP coordination copies, then verify control points and levels against the recorded baseline.
- Import the AI layout as a separate revision. Never replace an approved discipline model with AI geometry. Give the import a unique identifier and preliminary status.
- Apply and record transformations. If translation, rotation, scaling, or level mapping is required, store the values and the person who authorised them.
- Run a visual control check. Compare grids, cores, site boundaries, and known equipment locations before running automated rules. Stop if a control point does not land within the project’s agreed tolerance.
Autodesk’s coordination guidance notes that models need to be coordinated before construction begins to check that they are clash-free and feasible. That statement describes a coordination objective, not a legal approval; the project still needs its own acceptance criteria and professional sign-off.
| Format | Use in this workflow |
|---|---|
| RVT | Native authoring or coordination source for projects using that model environment |
| DWG | Two-dimensional or three-dimensional drawing exchange where the project protocol permits it |
| NWC | Coordination copy used in workflows that publish this cache format |
| IFC | Interoperable model exchange when the project information requirements specify IFC |
Run geometric and constructability checks
Start with hard clashes
Run automated interference tests across the AI layout and each relevant discipline. Typical pairs include structure against ductwork, pipework against beams, cable trays against fire-rated construction, equipment against walls, and civil utilities against foundations. Group results by discipline, level, system, and severity so the responsible reviewer can work through a coherent set rather than an undifferentiated list.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Define tolerances before running the test. A zero-distance intersection, a required installation gap, and an accidental overlap are different conditions. Record the rule name, tolerance, objects involved, coordinates, and model revisions for every finding.
Check clearances and access, not only intersections
Many failures are near misses rather than geometric overlaps. Review:
- Maintenance, inspection, and operating clearances around plant and valves.
- Door swings, stair and ramp paths, headroom, and continuous means of egress.
- Structural openings, sleeves, penetrations, and fire-stopping zones.
- Routes for delivery, installation, removal, and future replacement of equipment.
- Ceiling void depth for ducts, pipes, cable trays, sprinkler mains, insulation, and access panels.
- Site boundaries, setbacks, finished grades, retaining elements, and utility conflicts.
- Temporary works, sequence constraints, lifting zones, and access for construction activities.
These checks require design intent and construction knowledge. A service deliberately passing through a coordinated opening may be reported as a clash by software but should be resolved by confirming the opening detail and fire-stopping requirement, not by deleting the service.
Disposition every finding
Use a controlled issue workflow. A reviewer may mark a finding as not an issue only after documenting the reason, such as a designed penetration or an approved tolerance. Otherwise create an issue with an owner, priority, due date, affected model revision, and required corrective action. Re-run the relevant rule after each correction and retain the previous result so the history remains auditable.
Validate the information carried by each element
Geometry can be in the right place while the data is wrong. For each AI-generated element, verify classification, type, dimensions, material, location, host, responsible author, and any fire, acoustic, structural, energy, or performance properties required by the project information requirements.
Check that required parameters are populated with values from an identified source. Distinguish a value inherited from an approved model from one inferred by the AI. If a parameter is not applicable, use the project’s documented coding convention rather than leaving an ambiguous blank. Confirm object identity after export because classification, system assignment, and property names can change between native and exchange formats.
The audit trail should connect the element identifier to its source, reviewer, date, check rule, result, and disposition. Preserve screenshots or viewpoints for spatial findings, but treat them as supporting evidence; the model revision and issue record remain the controlling references.

Turn the building code into executable checks
Define the regulatory context first
Code compliance cannot be assessed without a jurisdiction and an adopted edition. Identify the authority having jurisdiction, code family and edition, local amendments, occupancy classification, construction type, building height and area, accessibility rules, fire and life-safety provisions, energy requirements, and planning or zoning constraints. Record the project facts that control each determination.

One-click scans. No signup required.
If the jurisdiction, edition, occupancy, or construction type is unknown, label the AI layout preliminary and stop short of a compliance claim. A generic code checklist may identify questions, but it cannot establish which provisions legally apply.
Write each provision as a testable rule
Convert every applicable requirement into a rule record with the same fields:
| Rule field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Rule citation | Code section, amendment, or approved interpretation |
| Inputs | Occupancy, area, height, travel path, door data, materials, or other required facts |
| Test | Geometric or numeric comparison applied to identified model objects |
| Tolerance | Project-approved measurement or modelling tolerance |
| Result | Pass, fail, conditional, or unable to assess with the available information |
| Reviewer | Qualified person responsible for confirming the interpretation |
Examples include checking whether egress paths remain continuous, whether door swings obstruct required routes, whether accessible routes connect required spaces, whether fire-rated elements and penetrations are identified, and whether site setbacks or grades conflict with planning constraints. The exact threshold must come from the adopted rule; do not substitute a value from another jurisdiction or edition.
Use automation as assistance, not legal certification
Published work on large-language-model-driven BIM code checking describes semi-automation research and notes that manual checking is time-consuming and error-prone. It does not establish a universal approval mechanism. Autodesk Research has identified integration of code visualisations and knowledge-management systems with CAD and BIM software as future work. These findings support assisted extraction, classification, and testing, while leaving interpretation and approval to qualified professionals.

A “pass” means the programmed test found no exception under its stated conditions; it does not by itself mean the authority will approve the design.
Apply the human approval gate
Assign review responsibility before the checks begin. The architect or engineer of record should confirm design intent and discipline coordination. A code consultant can interpret complex provisions, and the authority having jurisdiction may need to review or accept the submission according to local procedure.
- Issue the coordinated review package. Include the frozen AI revision, federated model, viewpoints, clash and clearance results, rule records, assumptions, and unresolved issues.
- Hold a multidisciplinary review. Walk through high-severity findings, exceptions, missing parameters, and any rule that returned conditional or unable to assess.
- Resolve or formally accept issues. Update the responsible model, revise the AI proposal, or document an approved exception with its authority and conditions.
- Re-run affected checks. A change to a wall, opening, level, occupancy, or system can invalidate earlier results beyond the immediate issue.
- Record the decision. Identify the approved revision, permitted use, reviewers, date, and any restrictions on construction, fabrication, procurement, or permitting.
- Release only the approved status. Keep preliminary and superseded AI exports accessible for traceability but prevent them from being mistaken for current construction information.
Where required, obtain a signed or otherwise controlled approval from the responsible professionals and the authority having jurisdiction. Without that gate, the output remains a coordination aid rather than construction information.

| Capability | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Model-format support | Can the tool exchange the project’s RVT, DWG, NWC, and IFC files without losing required geometry or data? |
| Coordinate transformation | Can it federate models, show the applied transformation, and verify control points and levels? |
| Clash-rule configuration | Can teams set discipline pairs, tolerances, exclusions, clearance rules, and severity? |
| Issue workflow | Can each finding receive an owner, status, viewpoint, due date, comment, and revision history? |
| Parameter validation | Can required classifications, properties, materials, and responsible-party fields be checked? |
| Code-rule coverage | Does the rule library match the project’s jurisdiction, adopted edition, and amendments? |
| Audit and version control | Are prompts, model revisions, rule versions, transformations, and reviewer actions retained? |
| Professional controls | Can the workflow enforce approval status and prevent preliminary files being issued for construction? |
Interoperability is only useful when the exchanged data remains interpretable. Test a representative model before committing to a workflow, and verify that exports preserve object identity, coordinates, levels, and the parameters needed for the project’s checks.
Common failure modes and recovery actions
The overlay looks right but control points disagree
Stop the comparison. Check units, origin, rotation, shared coordinates, and vertical datum in each native model. Re-export from the approved source, apply a documented transformation, and repeat the control-point check before trusting any clash result.
The clash report contains hundreds of false positives
Review tolerances, designed penetrations, access zones, insulation allowances, temporary works, and model duplication. Configure exclusions only when the design basis supports them, and document every exclusion so a genuine interference is not hidden.
A model passes geometry checks but cannot support a code decision
Identify missing occupancy, construction type, area, height, fire rating, accessibility, or other required inputs. Return the rule to conditional or unable to assess, obtain the authoritative project information, and re-run the test with the adopted code and amendments.
AI-generated objects have plausible shapes but unreliable data
Validate classification, type, host, material, dimensions, and required parameters against the information requirements. Replace inferred values with values from approved sources, assign a responsible author, and preserve the original AI revision for comparison.
A corrected model is mistaken for the approved one
Use revision identifiers, CDE status, naming conventions, and permissions that distinguish preliminary, shared, approved, and superseded information. Release a new revision after every material correction and keep the approval record attached to that revision.
What a defensible result contains
A complete verification package lets an independent reviewer reproduce the decision. It contains the frozen AI prompt and output, native and coordination files, baseline model revisions, coordinate and level records, applied transformations, clash and clearance rules, issue dispositions, element-level information checks, code citations and inputs, assumptions, unresolved limitations, reviewer identities, dates, and the final approval status.
The final statement should be precise about scope: for example, that a named AI revision was coordinated against specified model revisions, checked against identified rules for a stated jurisdiction and edition, and approved for a defined use. It should not imply that every possible construction, safety, or legal question has been resolved when the model or rule set did not contain the required information.
