How to Change the Color of Your Hydrangeas

Some bigleaf and mountain hydrangeas can shift between blue, purple, and pink as soil conditions change. Test soil first, then adjust pH gradually; cultivar and soil factors limit the result.

You can shift some hydrangeas between blue, purple, and pink by gradually changing soil conditions—but this works mainly with color-responsive bigleaf (Hydrangea macrophylla) and mountain (H. serrata) hydrangeas. Identify the plant and test the soil before adding an amendment; the cultivar and starting soil conditions determine what change is possible.

Which hydrangeas can change color?

The blue-to-pink shift is mainly possible in some bigleaf and mountain hydrangeas. Even within those groups, cultivars differ: genetics limit the colors a plant can produce, so changing soil conditions cannot guarantee a particular shade. Many white-flowered hydrangeas, including oakleaf and panicle types, do not change color this way. See Oregon State University Extension’s hydrangea guidance and the University of Arkansas guide to bigleaf hydrangea.

Why soil changes affect flower color

Soil pH affects how available aluminum is to the plant. Aluminum in flower tissue contributes to blue coloration; more acidic soil generally makes aluminum more available, while higher pH tends to make it less available and can favor pink in a responsive cultivar. Soil aluminum and phosphorus also affect availability, and genetics set the limits of the result. The University of Massachusetts Amherst and the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture explain these interacting factors.

How to change hydrangea color safely

  1. Identify the hydrangea. Check the plant label or confirm the type with a local nursery or extension office. Color adjustment is most relevant to responsive bigleaf and mountain hydrangeas, not every hydrangea.
  2. Test the soil before applying anything. Find out the current pH and, if the test provides them, relevant nutrient levels. The amount of amendment needed depends on starting pH and soil type. Use the test recommendation rather than a generic recipe. The University of Connecticut Home Garden Education Office recommends considering soil conditions when managing hydrangeas.
  3. For blue flowers, lower pH gradually. North Carolina Cooperative Extension describes soil around pH 5.0–5.5 as favorable for blue flowers in responsive varieties; UMass describes blue as more likely below pH 5.5. Garden sulfur or a labeled soil-acidifying amendment may be used when the soil test indicates it is appropriate. Follow the test recommendation and product label.
  4. For pink flowers, raise pH. Lime raises soil pH and can reduce aluminum availability. Apply it only in the amount recommended by the soil test and product directions.
  5. Give the soil time, then retest. Soil pH and flower color do not change immediately. Lime may take several months to affect pH, and Oregon State University Extension notes that a visible color change can take several years. Retest periodically rather than applying more amendment by guesswork.

What pH should you aim for?

These are guidance ranges, not guarantees; cultivar genetics and other soil factors still matter.

Desired color pH guidance What it means
Blue About 5.0–5.5 (North Carolina Cooperative Extension); below 5.5 (UMass Amherst) More acidic conditions generally make aluminum more available to responsive plants.
Purple or mixed pink and blue About 5.5–6 (North Carolina Cooperative Extension); 5.5–6.5 (UMass Amherst) Intermediate conditions may produce mixed or purple shades.
Pink 6 or higher (North Carolina Cooperative Extension); above 6.5 (UMass Amherst) Higher pH tends to make aluminum less available, favoring pink in responsive plants.

The ranges come from North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Wayne County Center (updated June 30, 2025) and UMass Amherst (updated July 14, 2026). Treat their thresholds as practical guidance, not a promise of a specific shade.

What can go wrong?

  • Changing the wrong plant: A nonresponsive type or cultivar may not shift color even if soil pH changes.
  • Applying too much amendment: Excess aluminum sulfate can injure plants, according to UMass. Follow the soil test and label rather than using repeated or concentrated applications.
  • Overshooting the pH: The University of Tennessee advises not lowering soil pH below 4.0 because it can damage roots. UConn notes that excessively high pH can be associated with iron-deficiency symptoms.
  • Expecting a quick or exact result: Soil conditions, cultivar, aluminum, and phosphorus all influence the outcome; changes are gradual and may take years to show in flowers.
