For many HAF-CIN and HAF-QIN filters, the basic process is to shut off the water, unlock and remove the old cartridge, install and lock the replacement, flush the system, and reset the filter reminder.
How often should you replace the filter?
Samsung recommends replacing the water filter every six months. Local water quality and how often you use the dispenser can affect when a filter needs attention; Samsung Canada advises replacing it sooner if water flow is noticeably slower with the filter installed than without it. How to find the right replacement filter
Filter compatibility depends on the refrigerator model; no single cartridge fits every Samsung fridge. Samsung US names HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1 in its replacement guidance, but those designations are not interchangeable recommendations for all models.
- Check the designation printed on the cartridge currently installed in the refrigerator.
- Confirm compatibility in the refrigerator’s user manual or Samsung’s filter finder. If you cannot identify the cartridge, look up the refrigerator model number and use Samsung’s model-specific guidance.
- Before buying, compare both the cartridge designation and its stated compatibility with your refrigerator. Samsung says genuine filters are available through its official channels; Samsung Canada also refers readers to authorized retailers.
Samsung Canada’s Fridge Water Filter Finder explains that the correct filter can be identified from the manual or the model number on the installed filter. Do not order based only on the fact that a cartridge is labelled for Samsung.

How to replace a Samsung refrigerator water filter
The steps below reflect Samsung US’s procedure for HAF-CIN and HAF-QIN cartridges. Filter location, housing design, and cartridge instructions vary by model, so follow your refrigerator’s manual if its directions differ. For HAFCU1 and other filter types, use the instructions matched to that cartridge and refrigerator.
- Turn off the refrigerator’s water supply. Locate the filter compartment; its position varies by refrigerator.
- Remove the old cartridge. Open the cover, turn the cartridge counterclockwise to unlock it, then pull it out.
- Prepare the replacement. Remove its protective cap, following any cartridge-specific directions.
- Install and lock it. Insert the cartridge and turn it clockwise until it locks. Check that the lock marking aligns with the mark on the housing.
- Flush the system. Dispense water before drinking from the refrigerator after replacement. The required amount varies by model and regional instructions; use the manual for your refrigerator’s exact flushing procedure.
- Reset the filter reminder. Use the control sequence for your model after installing the new filter.
How much water should you flush?
Samsung’s instructions differ by region, so these figures are examples for the procedures on the cited support pages, not a universal amount. Use your refrigerator’s manual when it specifies a different procedure.

How to reset the filter reminder
Reset controls differ by model, so do not assume that one button sequence applies to every Samsung refrigerator. Samsung US lists these examples:
- Models with a Filter Reset button: Press and hold it for three seconds.
- Family Hub: Select Apps → Fridge Manager → Fridge Settings → Water Filter → Reset.
- Models with arrow buttons: Select More Options → Filter Reset.
- RF4289 and RSG309: Samsung lists separate Settings procedures for these models; use the matching instructions in its support article rather than applying another model’s sequence.
Samsung Canada notes that on many models a secondary Alarm, Water Filter, or Ice/Water control may need to be held for three seconds. Check the refrigerator’s manual or model-specific support page if the reminder does not clear.

What to do if the new filter leaks or water flow is slow
- Slow flow after replacement: Confirm the cartridge is fully seated and locked. Samsung Canada recommends checking that the filter is fully locked when flow is slow.
- Leak at the filter: Remove the cartridge and reinstall it, making sure it is correctly aligned and locked. If it continues to leak, or if the cartridge or seal is damaged, stop using the dispenser and address the fit or damaged part rather than ignoring the leak.
- Reminder stays on: Verify that the replacement is installed and use the reset control for the exact refrigerator model. Reset-button locations and menu paths vary.
What Samsung says about filter standards
Samsung US states that its water filters meet NSF/ANSI standards 42, 53, and 401, and gives examples of contaminants addressed. That is Samsung’s claim about its filters; check the product-specific information for the exact cartridge you are considering rather than assuming every filter or every compatible product has the same certification.
