Identify the exact component and instructions in your vehicle’s owner’s manual and fuse-box label first. If the manual directs you to a dealer, follow that direction rather than disassembling a high-current assembly.
Identify the exact fuse before touching it
“Battery fuse” can mean a fuse mounted near the battery, a main fuse inside a positive-terminal cap, a multi fuse, or a fusible link. These are not automatically interchangeable. Their locations, ratings, fasteners, and service limits vary by vehicle.
Use the owner’s manual and fuse-box label for your vehicle’s year, make, and model to identify the part, its specified amperage and type, and whether owner replacement is permitted. Do not select a replacement based on appearance alone or assume a generic fuse kit fits a battery-mounted assembly.
When not to replace it yourself
- If the manual says the component should be inspected or replaced by an authorized dealer, arrange that service. Kia’s 2025 U.S. owner manual says a blown battery fuse should be checked by an authorized Kia dealer.
- A bolted multi fuse or a BFT-type main fuse may require specialist handling. Kia describes its BFT-type main fuse as being inside the positive battery-terminal cap and advises dealer inspection; it warns that incorrect or partial torque on a bolted multi fuse can cause a fire.
- If the replacement fuse blows again, stop. A recurring failure indicates an electrical problem that needs diagnosis, not another replacement fuse.
How to replace a battery fuse when your manual permits it
The following steps reflect the battery-fuse procedure in Kia’s 2025 U.S. owner manual only. They are not instructions for every vehicle. Follow your own manual if its shutdown, isolation, access, or fastening steps differ.

- Switch the vehicle off. Turn off the vehicle and other electrical loads, as directed in the manual.
- Isolate the battery as instructed. Kia’s example directs the owner to disconnect the negative battery cable before removing the battery-fuse fasteners. Use the isolation procedure specified for your exact vehicle.
- Access and remove the fuse. Locate the battery fuse identified in your manual and remove the nuts or other fasteners shown there. Do not pry or improvise if the assembly differs from the instructions.
- Fit the exact replacement. Use the correct fuse type and the same specified rating. Never install a higher-capacity fuse, or bridge the circuit with wire or foil.
- Reassemble in the specified order. Kia’s example calls for reinstalling the parts in reverse order and securely closing the battery cap. Do not guess at fastener torque on a bolted assembly.
- Check the affected function. Once the vehicle is safely reassembled, check only the equipment associated with the fuse. Confirm that the cap or cover is secure.
Why ordinary fuses and battery assemblies need different procedures
Instructions for a regular engine-compartment fuse do not necessarily apply to a high-current battery fuse. Hyundai’s 2025 U.S. owner manual, for example, describes a standard panel fuse as being removed with the fuse puller provided in the panel, then replaced with one of the same rating that fits tightly. It treats a multi fuse separately: that procedure involves disconnecting the negative cable and removing the cover and fasteners, with dealer assistance recommended.
For an ordinary fuse, Hyundai warns against using a screwdriver or another metal object to remove it because that can short the circuit. Its manual also says not to substitute wire or aluminum foil and warns that a higher-capacity fuse can cause damage and possibly fire. Follow these instructions only if they apply to the fuse and vehicle in question.

If the fuse looks intact or the replacement fails
A fuse element may appear melted or broken when it has blown, but appearance alone does not establish that a battery-mounted assembly is safe to remove or service. If electrical equipment does not work while the fuses are good, Nissan’s owner manual advises checking fusible links; if a link is melted, it says to replace it only with a genuine Nissan part. That is Nissan-specific guidance, not a universal parts rule.
