To change a Fisher & Paykel refrigerator water filter, first match the replacement cartridge to your refrigerator’s full model number, then follow the model-specific access and release steps. After installing the cartridge, flush 8 L (2 gal) through the filter before drinking the water, and reset the filter indicator only after the replacement.
Before you begin: check the model and cartridge
Fisher & Paykel refrigerators do not all use the same filter or access method. Find the full model number on the appliance identification label and check it against the existing cartridge label or the manufacturer’s model guide before buying a replacement. Do not assume that two cartridges with a similar shape—or two filter part numbers—are interchangeable.
The manufacturer lists filter 847200 for many E, RF, RS and integrated model families. Some older refrigerators may instead require 862285 or 862288. Filter 847201 is listed for specific models, with RF523GDUX given as a compatible example. Verify the exact model before ordering:

Use the replacement instructions for your appliance configuration, not just the cartridge family. Fisher & Paykel’s Water Filter Replacement guide separates external filters, freestanding models, RF730Q, RS60, integrated columns and integrated French Door models. Older model-specific guides may describe different access or indicator controls.

How to remove and install the filter
Locate the section that matches your refrigerator. The general lock action in the configurations below is to fully insert the aligned filter and turn it clockwise 90 degrees, but access points and release steps differ.
External filter
- Tilt the cartridge out of its bracket.
- Turn it counterclockwise to release it from the filter head, then remove it. A small amount of water dripping after removal can be normal.
- Remove the new cartridge’s packaging. Align it with the head, insert it fully and turn it clockwise 90 degrees until locked.
- Return the cartridge to its bracket.
Freestanding models covered by the guide
The internal filter is at the top right rear of the refrigerator.

- Release the filter cover.
- Pull the cartridge forward, turn it counterclockwise 90 degrees and remove it.
- Align and fully insert the new cartridge, then turn it clockwise 90 degrees to lock it.
- Replace the cover.
RF730Q, RS60 and integrated models
RF730Q, RS60, integrated-column and integrated French Door refrigerators have distinct filter access points. Some use a supplied filter tool; the manufacturer also notes that pliers may be needed to remove some RF730Q or RS60 cartridges. Follow the diagrams and access steps for the exact model in the official replacement guide rather than applying the external-filter or freestanding procedure.
For the configurations covered by the current guide, Fisher & Paykel says shutting off the water is not necessary, and removal may be easier with the water on. If your model’s own instructions differ, follow those instructions.

Flush the new filter before use
Fisher & Paykel requires flushing 8 L (2 gal) through the new filter before use. The route depends on the appliance:
- Refrigerators with a water dispenser: flush through both the dispenser and the ice maker.
- Ice-maker-only models: flush through the ice maker.
If a safety lockout interrupts flushing, check the user guide for that specific model before proceeding.

Reset the filter indicator
Reset the indicator after replacing the cartridge, not before. Fisher & Paykel says the indicator illuminates when the filter needs changing and recommends replacement every six months. Resetting before replacement makes filter monitoring inaccurate.
The current general instructions describe pressing two controls together for four seconds, but the controls vary by model. Use the reset procedure in your refrigerator’s guide; if the panel does not match the general instructions, do not guess at a button combination. The older RF170WDRUX5 N installation guide is an example of model-specific instructions that should be applied only to that model.

Water-supply and installation safety
Connect the refrigerator only to a safe drinking-water supply. Fisher & Paykel says the water connection must comply with applicable state and local plumbing requirements and be installed by a qualified plumber or a Fisher & Paykel trained and supported service technician. If you are unsure whether your supply or installation meets those requirements, have it checked before using the dispenser or ice maker.
