For a first wooden figure, use a clean, soft-grained blank such as basswood, a sharp carving knife, and only the gouges or V-tool needed for the shapes you plan to make. Sketch the figure first, secure the wood, and remove material in controlled cuts; add detail after the basic form is established.
Choose wood that is forgiving to carve
Basswood is a practical starting point because its soft, even grain is relatively forgiving for a beginner. Choose a clean blank without knots or complicated grain, which can make cutting less predictable. Fine Woodworking discusses basswood as a soft carving wood, while Dremel’s UK beginner guide also lists limewood, birch, pine, willow, and horse chestnut among easier options: Fine Woodworking’s carving guide and Dremel’s woodcarving guide.
More experienced carvers may choose walnut, cherry, or mahogany for crisp detail, but these woods generally demand more effort and control than a soft beginner stock. Wood choice depends on the figure’s size, the detail you want, and your experience; there is no single best wood for every carving.
Start with a few tools that suit the cuts
A sharp carving knife is a useful first tool for small figure work. Add tools when the design calls for cuts the knife cannot make efficiently. Gouges shape curves and hollows; a V-tool cuts narrow lines or defines boundaries between areas. Straight gouges are useful for general shaping, while fishtail gouges can reach restricted spots and spoon gouges can work deeper concave areas.

Choose tools by the cut, profile and width required, access to the area, and whether you will push the tool by hand or strike it with a mallet. A large set is not automatically more useful: start with a few profiles suited to the figure and expand only as specific needs become clear. Plan the figure before cutting
- Sketch the design. Draw the figure on paper and decide which forms need to stand proud and which areas need to be recessed.
- Transfer the outline. Lightly mark the principal views or boundaries on the blank so you have a guide as you remove material.
- Prioritize the main shape. Establish the overall mass and proportions before attempting small features. A simple first figure is easier to manage than a design crowded with fine details.

Secure the blank and work with control
Keep the work from shifting before applying force. A clamp or other suitable workholding method can stabilize a blank; for some flat-backed or delicate work, Fine Woodworking describes clamping a backer to the bench and using double-stick tape. Choose a setup that holds the piece firmly without obstructing the area you need to carve.
For a two-handed gouge cut, one hand pushes while the other guides. Brace the guiding hand where possible to limit tool travel. With a knife, direct the cut away from the hand controlling or holding the work. Use deliberate cuts and stop to reposition the blank rather than forcing a tool through an awkward angle. Match protection to the operation
- Use a sharp knife and keep the non-knife hand protected; Dremel recommends a glove on that hand.
- Wear safety glasses when sawing, chopping, or using a rotary tool.
- Use a dust mask for carving, cutting, sanding, or polishing, as recommended in Dremel’s UK guide.
- Follow the safety directions for the specific tool, and keep hands out of the likely path of a slipping edge.
Keep edges sharp
A sharp edge supports controlled cutting. Dremel describes using a ceramic sharpening stone for knives. Fine Woodworking discusses bench stones, slip stones for gouge interiors, and a leather strop charged with honing compound. Gouges have curved inside profiles, so their edges require attention to that shape; a single flat stone is not sufficient for every surface. Select a sharpening method suited to each tool’s geometry.
