Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller) is easiest to maintain when you treat it as a drought-adapted succulent: provide strong light, fast drainage, and water only after the soil has dried completely. A terracotta pot with several drainage holes and a succulent mix gives roots the best chance of avoiding rot. You can divide rooted pups for new plants, and you can collect clear inner-leaf gel for limited topical use—but latex, rind and whole-leaf preparations should not be eaten or used as medicine.
Set up the right light, pot and soil
Light
Give an indoor aloe a bright location. Outdoors, aloe tolerates full sun to partial shade; acclimate a plant gradually if moving it into stronger direct sun. Keep the leaves from pressing against cold glass or sitting in a persistently dark corner.

Container and drainage
Use a pot with several open drainage holes. North Carolina State University Extension identifies clay as the best pot material for aloe; terracotta is a practical choice because it allows the root zone to dry more readily than a sealed container. Never leave the pot standing in water.
Growing medium
Choose a very well-drained succulent medium. University of Florida IFAS notes that aloe can grow in any well-drained, quality potting medium. Repot when the plant has outgrown its container or the medium no longer drains freely.

Water only after the soil dries
Allow the soil to completely dry between waterings. When it is time to water, wet the medium thoroughly until water exits the drainage holes, then empty the saucer. Do not add small “sips” on a fixed schedule while the soil is still damp: persistent moisture deprives roots of air and increases the risk of root rot.
Check moisture below the surface rather than judging by the calendar. Aloe generally needs less water in winter, when growth and evaporation are slower. A soft, collapsing base, darkening roots or a sour-smelling medium calls for an immediate drainage and root check rather than more water.

Choose a care setup for your goal
| Goal | Light emphasis | Watering rule | Container priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indoor ornamental plant | Bright indoor light | Wait for complete soil dryness; water less often in winter | Terracotta or other clay pot with several drainage holes |
| Outdoor plant | Full sun to partial shade | Let the well-drained medium dry completely between waterings | Container or bed must shed water quickly |
| Offset (pup) propagation | Bright light after potting | Keep the new medium from staying wet while the cut surface settles | Small, well-drained pot with drainage holes |
| Topical gel harvest | Maintain vigorous growth with the same bright-light, dry-between-waterings care | Do not overwater in an attempt to enlarge leaves | A stable, freely draining pot that supports the mature plant |
Propagate aloe by dividing pups
Aloe commonly produces offsets, or pups, around the mother plant. Division is the most useful home propagation method because a pup with its own roots can establish as an independent plant.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Remove the mother plant from its pot or expose the offset carefully.
- Separate a pup that has its own roots, using a clean blade only if the connection cannot be loosened by hand.
- Let any damaged cut surface dry briefly before planting.
- Pot the pup in a well-draining succulent medium and a container with drainage holes.
- Return it to bright light and avoid keeping the new medium continuously wet.
Seed propagation is possible but slow. University of Arizona Cooperative Extension reports that it is most successful under greenhouse conditions, so division is usually the more practical choice for a home grower.

Harvest clear inner-leaf gel cautiously
Commercial harvesting cuts mature leaves at the base. For a home harvest, use a mature outer leaf and retain only the clear inner gel. The green rind and yellow latex are separate materials, and incomplete removal of the outer layers can contaminate gel with latex.
- Cut one mature outer leaf cleanly near its base.
- Stand the leaf cut-side down and allow the yellow latex to drain; discard that liquid.
- Remove the green rind carefully.
- Collect only the clear inner-leaf fillet for limited topical use.
Do not treat raw home-harvested leaf, latex or whole-leaf preparations as food or medicine. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) reports that topical aloe gel is generally well tolerated but can occasionally cause burning, itching, rash or eczema. Oral aloe latex can cause abdominal pain, cramps and diarrhea, may interact with medicines, and may be unsafe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid applying gel to damaged skin if it stings, and stop use if a rash or other reaction develops.

Identify common pests and diseases
- Mealybugs: Look for white, cottony clusters in leaf joints and on the plant base.
- Aphids: Check tender growth for small insects and sticky residue.
- Scale: Inspect leaves and stems for fixed, shell-like bumps.
- Leaf spot or aloe rust: Marked or discolored tissue can signal disease; isolate a suspect plant and keep foliage and soil surface as dry as practical.
- Sooty mold: A dark coating can follow sap-feeding insects.
- Root rot: Persistent wet soil is the central risk. Reassess drainage and watering before treating symptoms.
A simple maintenance routine
- Place the plant in bright light and confirm that the pot has several drainage holes.
- Feel the medium at depth; water only when it is completely dry.
- Water thoroughly, then drain the saucer.
- Inspect leaf joints, the crown and the soil surface for pests, spots or lingering moisture.
- In winter, extend the interval between waterings and be especially cautious of damp soil.
- Repot into fresh, freely draining medium when drainage slows or the plant has outgrown its container.
