LECHUZA’s published specifications show how widely reservoir capacity can vary. CLASSICO Color is a round pot for indoor or outdoor use; BALCONERA is a railing or wall planter with removable liners. Check the current regional listing before buying because sizes, finishes and availability can change.

How the LECHUZA reservoir system works
The classic system places a reservoir below a separator and uses a water-supply shaft. LECHUZA instructs owners to cover the separator with the supplied LECHUZA-PON drainage layer, plant, and water from above during a growing-in phase of approximately 12 weeks. The quoted instruction is: “Over the next 12 weeks* continue to water the plant as you normally would, pouring water “onto” it from above.”

After the growing-in period, water is added through the shaft to the max mark. When the indicator reaches min, LECHUZA describes a dry phase that can last 2–10 days. Those figures are the manufacturer’s guidance for its system, not a guarantee for every plant, climate or planter brand.

Small plants and the stick arrangement
When a small plant’s roots cannot reach the reservoir, LECHUZA describes a stick system that transfers moisture and nutrients through LECHUZA-PON by capillary action. This arrangement can allow the grow pot to remain intact. It is different from assuming that every self-watering planter uses a wick.
Setup checklist before the first fill
- Confirm that the pot size and root volume suit the plant. A larger reservoir does not make a moisture-sensitive plant suitable for constantly damp conditions.
- Install the separator, water shaft and the manufacturer-specified LECHUZA-PON layer as directed for the model.
- Plant without blocking the indicator or shaft.
- During the approximately 12-week growing-in phase, water from above rather than relying on the reservoir alone.
- Once established, fill through the shaft to max, then wait for the indicator to reach min before refilling.
- For plants that prefer drier conditions, LECHUZA says owners can wait a few additional days after the indicator reaches min.
Indoor, outdoor and balcony drainage
Indoor use
For indoor use, LECHUZA’s FAQ says to tighten the sealing screw. Place the planter on a surface that can tolerate occasional spills while you learn the indicator and filling routine.

Outdoor floor pots
For outdoor use, remove the drain plug so excess rainwater can leave through the overflow. Leaving outdoor drainage sealed can allow rainfall to accumulate beyond what the reservoir was designed to hold.
Balcony and wall installation
BALCONERA’s liners are removable, which can simplify planting and seasonal changes. The manufacturer’s flyer says brackets are available separately. Use the bracket specified for the planter and the railing or wall, follow its installation instructions, and account for the planter’s fully watered weight. Do not treat a freestanding pot as a substitute for a properly secured balcony installation.

What “self-watering” does—and does not—mean
- It does mean: a reservoir and indicator can make water levels easier to monitor than a conventional pot.
- It does not mean: the planter can be ignored, every plant should stay equally moist, or roots cannot suffer from unsuitable watering.
- It does not prove travel reliability: the cited material contains no independent test showing how long any model keeps plants healthy while an owner is away.
- It is not a cross-brand performance ranking: the specifications and instructions here come from LECHUZA product materials.
How to choose among the six
Choose CLASSICO Color when you need a round pot
Select the smallest size that provides adequate root volume and physical stability. CLASSICO Color sizes listed by LECHUZA run from 12 through 70, with published reservoir capacities ranging from 0.2 L at size 12 to 26.5 L at size 70. A floor, shelf or room setting is usually more straightforward than a balcony installation because it does not require a separate railing bracket.
Choose BALCONERA when the location is the priority
BALCONERA is designed for flowers, herbs and fruit on a balcony or suitable wall. Its removable liners help with handling, while the up-to-6-L reservoir can reduce the frequency of checks compared with a small container. The correct bracket and weather drainage are essential, and brackets are not included according to the cited flyer.

Match moisture behavior to the plant
Plants differ in how much moisture they tolerate. Use the indicator as a management aid, not as permission to refill automatically on a fixed schedule. Observe the plant, growing medium and local conditions, especially during cool, dark or very hot periods.
Maintenance routine
- Check the water-level indicator rather than topping up every day.
- Refill when it reaches min; for drier-preferring plants, consider the manufacturer’s suggested additional wait.
- Inspect the reservoir, shaft and overflow for debris.
- Reassess watering after moving the planter, changing plants or experiencing a major seasonal shift.
- For balconies and outdoor pots, confirm that the drain plug and overflow arrangement still match the installation.
Bottom line for a purchase decision
CLASSICO Color offers the clearest size-based route for a round indoor or floor planter, from the compact 12 to the high-capacity 70. BALCONERA is the location-specific option for a securely mounted balcony or wall installation. Both still require a growing-in period, indicator checks and correct drainage. Treat the reservoir as a tool for steadier care—not as a guarantee that plants will survive unattended travel.
