Winter growth may slow, but a lemon tree stays evergreen and still needs light and attentive care.
When to bring your lemon tree indoors
Monitor local overnight forecasts in autumn and move the tree inside before frost. Wisconsin Extension advises bringing container citrus in as temperatures approach freezing. Do not wait for the first frost to make the decision: a container can cool quickly, and the right timing depends on your local conditions.

Prepare its indoor spot in advance and inspect the leaves and stems for pests before moving it. A gradual transition can reduce stress from changes in light and surroundings. For a full-winter move, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension recommends reducing light exposure gradually over two to four weeks, for example by partially shading the tree. Treat this as a helpful acclimation approach, not a mandatory schedule for every home.

Set the tree near a sunny south- or southwest-facing window if possible. Extension recommendations call for substantial direct light: University of Maryland Extension advises at least six hours daily, with eight to 12 hours preferable; Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommends at least six to eight hours. Shorter winter days and a shaded window may make those targets difficult to meet.

If natural light is insufficient, supplemental fluorescent or LED lighting can help. The cited guidance supports supplemental lighting but does not establish a universal lamp wattage, distance, or daily schedule, so follow the light manufacturer’s directions and adjust based on the tree’s location and response. Low light may keep foliage alive, but flowering and fruiting are less likely.
Keep temperatures steady and protect the tree from cold
Keep the lemon away from frost, cold drafts, and sudden temperature changes. Published recommendations vary: Iowa State describes 65–85°F by day and 55–65°F at night as preferred, and warns that temperatures below 50°F can cause leaf loss. Wisconsin Extension gives a broader preferred growing range of 55–85°F and notes that a 5–10°F difference between day and night may promote flowering. These are source-specific growing recommendations, not guaranteed injury thresholds for every cultivar or home.

Avoid placing the pot directly beside a drafty exterior door or against a cold window. A bright, relatively stable location is generally more useful than chasing a single temperature number.

As growth slows in winter, reduce watering frequency, but do not let the root zone remain soggy or dry out completely. Check the mix before watering: it should be moist but not saturated, with a little drying between waterings. How quickly it dries depends on pot size, mix, room temperature, and indoor conditions, so a calendar interval is unreliable.

Leaf drop can happen with either too little or too much water. Check the moisture of the mix and the plant’s conditions rather than diagnosing the problem from that symptom alone.
Adjust feeding and make sure the pot drains
Feed during active growth
Follow the fertilizer label and feed while the tree is actively growing. North Carolina State Extension’s Meyer lemon profile advises fertilizing from spring to fall while the plant is growing and reducing winter watering. A citrus or acid-loving plant fertilizer may be appropriate during active growth; winter is not automatically a feeding season.

Keep roots out of standing water
Citrus does best in a slightly acidic, free-draining growing medium and a pot with drainage holes. Empty excess water from the saucer rather than leaving the container standing in it. If a suitable soilless mix drains poorly, Wisconsin Extension notes that perlite or pumice can improve drainage.

An oversized pot can hold excess moisture around a smaller root system; repot only when needed and choose a container suited to the root system, with drainage holes.

Inspect for pests after the move
Check both sides of leaves, stems, and branch joints before and after bringing the tree indoors. Mississippi State Extension identifies scale, aphids, and mites among pests that can affect container citrus and notes that indoor moves can bring pest concerns into the home. If you see signs of an infestation, identify the pest before choosing a treatment and follow relevant extension advice and the product label.
