You can build a working Heron’s fountain with three connected reservoirs and a few tubes. Water falling into the lower reservoir pressurizes air, and that air pushes water through a separate tube to make a jet. The stream is finite: gravity and the changing water levels drive it, and you must reset the apparatus when the pressure difference fades.
What materials do you need?
For a bottle-and-straw home build, the NGK Science Site specifies three cylindrical 500 ml plastic bottles and four bendable straws. Its instructions also call for clear vinyl tape, plastic adhesive, a cutter, scissors, an awl, and a round carving tool. The bottle size and quantities apply to that design, not every Heron’s fountain.
Use the diagrams in the NGK Science Site instructions to identify which openings and tubes go where. The source’s design depends on carefully routed tubes and airtight joints; a generic layout may not match its bottle-and-cap arrangement.
How do you make Heron’s fountain?
- Plan the tube routing. Study the NGK diagrams before cutting or piercing the bottles and caps. The three reservoirs need distinct connections: water must fall into a lower vessel, displaced air must reach a water-filled vessel, and a fountain tube must carry water up to the nozzle.
- Prepare the tubes. The NGK design joins straws to form a longer tube and makes a small nozzle. Follow its diagram for the required lengths and placement; the cited instructions do not establish a universal set of dimensions.
- Make the openings. Use the cutter, scissors, awl, and round carving tool carefully to form the openings shown in the original instructions. Keep the bottles and caps stable while working.
- Route and seal the straws. Pass the straws through the caps and the side opening as shown. Seal joints with clear vinyl tape and plastic adhesive so air cannot escape and water follows the intended path.
- Add water and assemble the fountain. Follow the source diagrams for filling and inverting the assembly. Exact fill amounts and tube positions depend on this specific design.
- Test for leaks and flow. If air escapes at a joint, pressure will dissipate and the fountain may fail to start or stop quickly. Check that the tube openings sit in the intended air and water spaces before changing the fill or routing.
How does Heron’s fountain work?
The falling water transfers pressure through air in the connected vessels. As water enters the lower container, it displaces air; that pressurized air travels through a connecting tube and pushes another portion of water up the fountain tube. The jet rises without a powered pump, but it does not create energy.

The height and volume of the falling water, the relative positions of the reservoirs, and losses in the system determine how much water can be pushed upward. In its explanation of a different flask apparatus, Simon Fraser University’s Department of Physics writes that “the remaining energy (minus thermal losses) goes into pushing the middle bulb water even higher than the fountain.” The page was last revised in 2023; its wording describes that demonstration, not a guaranteed height for a homemade bottle build. How do you prime and reset it?
Priming and reset instructions vary with the apparatus. In Appalachian State University’s flask demonstration, the upper flask starts mostly full, the lower flask starts empty, and 50 ml of water is poured into the fountain dish to prime it. As water falls into the lower flask, pressure pushes water from the upper flask through the fountain tube. To reset that apparatus, return water from the lower flask to the upper one while retaining 50 ml in the dish for priming. Why does the fountain stop?
The water levels change as the fountain runs. Eventually the upper reservoir empties, the lower one fills, or the arrangement no longer sustains enough pressure to push water through the nozzle. The fountain must be reset to run again; it is not perpetual motion. Leaks, misplaced tube ends, and other flow losses can also prevent a build from working properly.

Safety and spill control
- Handle cutters, scissors, awls, and carving tools carefully. Younger children should work with adult supervision, as the NGK instructions advise.
- Work over a basin or tray and keep towels nearby. University demonstrations also use trays or towels to contain spills.
- Keep filled glass vessels stable and protect them from bumps and scratches. The University of Iowa safety guidance notes the vulnerability of filled glass carboys and advises securing hoses when packing away the demonstration.
- Do not force an ill-fitting stopper into a vessel. The system relies on controlled connections, not improvised pressure containment.
