You can add water to a garden without starting with an expensive fountain or digging a large pond. A shallow birdbath, a reused container pond, or a small lined wildlife pond can each suit a different space and level of commitment. Choose based on the room available, the habitat you want to create, the care you can provide, and whether deeper water is appropriate for your household.

Which water feature suits your garden?

Option Best suited to Cost-conscious approach Trade-offs
Birdbath or shallow bubbler Very small gardens, quick installation, or households seeking a shallow-water option Reuse a large plant saucer or another suitable household item; add pebbles for footing and bee access Less planted habitat than a pond; keep the shallow water clean and refreshed
Container pond Patios, courtyards, balconies, or roof gardens Reuse a watertight trough, sink, bath, barrel, or large pot; plug drainage holes or fit a flexible liner Limited water volume; stabilize the vessel and provide wildlife access
Small lined wildlife pond Gardens with room for shallow margins and a goal of supporting broader pond life Build only as large as the site can accommodate, plant it, and skip unnecessary pump or filter equipment Requires excavation and ongoing attention; consider children, utilities, runoff, access, and local requirements before digging

There are no comparable current project prices for these options: actual cost depends on location, size, materials you already have, and the finish you choose.

How do you make a cheap water feature for a garden?

Start with a birdbath or shallow bubbler

A birdbath is a simple entry point that does not require excavation. Penn State Extension says birds prefer shallow water and rougher surfaces. A large terra-cotta plant saucer or an inverted garbage-can lid can serve as a DIY basin; add small rocks if the surface is slippery. Keep the water shallow and refresh it regularly. Penn State Extension’s birdbath and backyard pond guidance was updated August 5, 2024.

A bubbler adds movement, but it is optional. If young children may encounter the feature, the RHS recommends a birdbath or bubble fountain with only a thin film of water as a safer way to attract birds. Pebbles can also provide bees with a place to drink. See the RHS guide to water habitats.

Can you make a pond in a pot?

Choose and prepare a container

Yes. A container pond can bring water and aquatic plants to a patio, courtyard, balcony, or roof garden. The RHS lists stone troughs, old sinks or baths, and large glazed or plastic pots as possible vessels. If the container has drainage holes, plug them or fit a flexible pond liner. Rinse a reused wooden barrel and make it watertight; according to the RHS, filling and topping it up can help the wood swell and seal leaks.

Set a suitable depth and provide access

For a container pond intended to hold a few plants, the RHS recommends a minimum water depth of 20–30 cm (8 in–1 ft). This is horticultural advice, not a measured study result. Keep the vessel stable, especially on a balcony or roof, and provide a way for wildlife to reach the water and climb out. A ramp or gently sloping access is particularly important for steep-sided containers. The RHS describes container ponds as ideal for courtyard or patio gardens in its water habitats guidance.

When is a small lined wildlife pond a better choice?

A lined pond makes sense when you have room for a larger water surface, planted margins, and shallow access. Plan its shape and location before digging. The pond edges should be level, with shallow areas or sloping sides that help wildlife get in and out. Avoid placing it where rain can wash fertilizer or treated soil into the water; also consider how you will top it up during dry spells. The RHS says rainwater is preferable to tap water for a wildlife pond.

Before excavation, check for buried electrical lines and any local pond ordinances. Penn State Extension also advises avoiding runoff from roads and treated garden areas. Its recommendations are available in Water for Wildlife: Bird Baths and Backyard Ponds.

Does a wildlife pond need a pump?

No. A basic wildlife pond can work without a pump. Add one only if you want a recirculating feature such as a dripper or waterfall. If you do, select pump capacity based on the amount of water, the vertical lift and horizontal distance the water must travel, and whether the pump also needs to serve a filter. Without those project details, there is no reliable single pump size to recommend. The RHS discusses pump and pond care considerations in its pond care guidance.

The RHS notes that solar-powered fountains are readily available and advises maintaining oxygenation in hot, humid weather, especially in ponds with fish. That does not make a fountain necessary for every small wildlife pond.

How do you keep a small water feature safe and manageable?

Plan for children and wildlife

Water can pose drowning and slip hazards, particularly where pond edges are steep or slippery. A very shallow birdbath or bubbler is an alternative to deeper water when young children are at risk. For a pond or container with steep sides, use sloped access or keep a wildlife ramp in place. The RHS’s school pond health and safety guidance discusses hazards and safeguards in school settings; it is useful hazard context, not residential law. Check requirements that apply where you live.

Use light, regular care

Observe the plants and water periodically. In summer, control excessive plant growth, remove dead or fading leaves, and remove algae if needed. If you have to clear algae or carry out other work, allow creatures a chance to return to the pond. The RHS cautions against unnecessary full clean-outs because they can disrupt a pond’s natural balance; its pond care advice covers seasonal upkeep.
