Bubinga is a commercial name for wood from several African Guibourtia species, not a guarantee of one exact botanical identity. The name is associated with Guibourtia demeusei, G. pellegriniana and G. tessmannii; those woods are used in furniture, fine cabinetry and musical instruments. For a construction or woodworking project, check the species, product form and sourcing documents rather than relying on the word “bubinga” alone.
What does “bubinga” mean?
Bubinga is a trade name used for wood associated with multiple African tree species in the genus Guibourtia. The CITES timber guide covers G. demeusei, G. pellegriniana and G. tessmannii in this trade context. Because the species can be confused or substituted in international trade, a seller’s use of “bubinga” does not, by itself, establish which species a product contains. CITES, CITES and Timber (2023).
Kew accepts Guibourtia demeusei (Harms) J.Léonard as a species name. Its classification is Fabaceae, and Kew records its native range in Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. Kew describes it as a wet-tropical tree. Those details apply to G. demeusei, not automatically to every wood sold as bubinga. Kew Plants of the World Online: Guibourtia demeusei.
Which species and trade names are associated with bubinga?
The CITES guide associates “Rose Bubinga” commonly with G. tessmannii and G. pellegriniana, and “Red Bubinga” with G. demeusei. These are trade labels, not dependable proof of a product’s botanical identity. Ask the supplier to state the species and explain what evidence supports that identification.

For G. demeusei, the CITES guide gives an approximate tree height of 25–40 metres and describes a range extending into the central Congo basin. Its descriptions of the other two species’ more localized ranges and low population density should not be generalized to all bubinga. A 1949 CIRAD technical profile titled “Bubinga” also focuses specifically on G. demeusei; it is historical technical context, not a current guide to products or supply. What is bubinga wood used for?
The CITES guide says G. demeusei is widely used as veneer in fine cabinetry, furniture and musical instruments, including guitar sets. Rotary-cut bubinga veneer is also called “kevazingo.” The guide describes local socio-cultural uses of all three species and demand for G. tessmannii and G. pellegriniana in furniture-making in their ranges. These documented uses make bubinga relevant to woodworking and instrument projects, but they do not establish that every product sold under the name is suitable for a particular application.

What to check before buying bubinga lumber or blanks
Search terms such as “bubinga wood,” “bubinga lumber” and “bubinga wood blanks” can help locate material for cabinetry or instrument work. Treat a listing as a starting point, then verify its details with the supplier. The available sources establish uses and species distinctions, but do not provide dimensions, moisture condition or evidence for any particular retail product.
- Species: Look for a botanical name, not only “Rose Bubinga,” “Red Bubinga” or “bubinga.” Ask what supports the species claim.
- Product form: Confirm whether the item is solid wood, a blank, or veneer; these are different materials for different work.
- Project specifications: Check dimensions and moisture condition against your design and fabrication requirements. These details must come from the individual supplier.
- Documentation: Ask what sourcing and shipment documents are available, especially if the material will cross a border.
Do CITES rules apply to bubinga?
Yes, the named species can be subject to CITES controls, but the requirements depend on the species, product, shipment and countries involved. Singapore NParks’ April 2023 factsheet states that G. demeusei, G. pellegriniana and G. tessmannii are listed in CITES Appendix II and explains annotation #15 and specified exceptions. Its guidance concerns import and re-export through Singapore; it is not universal legal advice or a statement of current requirements for every jurisdiction.

The factsheet describes exceptions that include certain finished products subject to a wood-weight threshold per shipment, as well as finished musical instruments, parts and accessories. Whether an exception applies depends on the exact item and movement. Before buying, exporting, importing or re-exporting, confirm current rules with the relevant CITES management authority and customs authority for each country involved.
