Building an outdoor shower starts with two decisions: whether it will use a garden hose for cold water or connect to household plumbing for hot and cold, and where its water will drain. A hose-fed shower can be built around a sturdy post, a hose, and a slatted platform. A permanent hot-and-cold installation needs a planned plumbing route, service access, and often a licensed plumber. Choose one design and follow its dimensions and materials as a complete plan.
1. Choose the water supply and location
For a straightforward cold-water rinse, position the shower within reach of an existing outdoor spigot. Bob Vila’s post-mounted plan uses a garden hose for this arrangement. If you want hot and cold water, plan to route supply lines from household plumbing; Fine Homebuilding recommends considering an exterior wall near kitchen, bathroom, or laundry plumbing and including an access panel for maintenance. Aquor also recommends professional plumbing installation for its hot-and-cold hydrant.
Choose a private spot with a stable, relatively level area and a slight grade that directs runoff away from the house and basement. Check local building, plumbing, and wastewater requirements before deciding where water can go: some jurisdictions require gray water to enter a sewer or septic system, and ground discharge is not universally permitted. A gravel bed is one option described for a simple hose-fed build, not a substitute for checking local rules.
2. Pick one build plan and gather its materials
Published DIY designs differ in their supports, enclosures, bases, and dimensions. Bob Vila describes a hose-fed shower mounted to a post with a slatted base; The Home Depot guide uses a framed privacy enclosure and a different materials list. Choose one design and keep its measurements and materials together rather than combining dimensions from separate plans.

Materials for a post-mounted, hose-fed build
Bob Vila’s plan lists lumber for a 4-by-4 support and slatted base, outdoor-rated screws, outdoor wood sealer, gravel or small stones, a garden hose, shower head and threaded arm, threaded pipe and elbows, a faucet, and plumbing straps. Its tools include a post-hole digger, drill, spade bit, and circular saw. These are plan-specific materials, not a universal specification or code requirement. See Bob Vila’s outdoor shower guide and The Home Depot’s framed shower project guide for their respective designs.
Materials for a hot-and-cold option
A permanent installation needs compatible hot- and cold-water connections, a fixture suited to that supply, and access to shutoffs and service points. Aquor’s manufacturer-listed Backyard Shower Kit includes a hot-and-cold hydrant, handheld shower wand, hose, holder, and adapter. The product page specifies a 1/2-inch PEX expansion inlet, a 3/4-inch garden-hose-thread outlet, and a vacuum breaker in the hose connector. These are manufacturer specifications; confirm current listing details and compatibility with your plumbing before purchase.

3. Build the base and support
For the post-mounted approach, build a square frame and fasten evenly spaced slats across it, leaving gaps so water can pass through. Seal the wood with an outdoor sealer and let it dry as directed by the product label. Set the upright support in a post hole using the method specified by the selected plan; Bob Vila’s guide describes concrete or soil. Place gravel or small stones under the platform to support drainage, while keeping the site’s grade directed away from the home.
Make sure the platform sits securely and does not rock underfoot. If the shower will use an existing exterior wall, protect that wall from repeated moisture. Fine Homebuilding advises adequate moisture protection; a separate removable shower wall with an airspace can help the wall dry.

Includes all mounting hardware and clear instructions for quick installation in backyards, poolside areas, resorts, courtyards, beaches, lake houses, spas, or mud rooms
4. Mount and connect the shower fittings
In the hose-fed plan, assemble the shower head and threaded arm with the pipe, elbows, and faucet, then secure the plumbing to the support with pipe straps. Connect the garden hose at the rear. Follow the fixture and fitting manufacturers’ directions for thread sealant, tightening, and compatible connections; do not assume every fitting in a generic plan matches every fixture.
A permanent hot-and-cold supply is a different plumbing project, not simply an expanded hose connection. Plan the line route and access before closing any wall or enclosure, and have a licensed plumber assess work involving household supply lines. For a kit, verify inlet and outlet compatibility and follow its current installation instructions.

- 1/2-Inch NPT Wall-Mount Installation: Includes stainless steel mounting screws, plumber’s tape, spare washers, and installation instructions
5. Test the shower and check the runoff
- Confirm the platform and support are stable, and that the hose or supply line is connected as directed by the fixture maker.
- Turn on the water and inspect each fitting and connection for leaks.
- Check that water drains through the platform and follows the intended route without pooling at the shower or flowing toward the house.
- Keep shutoffs, drain points, and any access panel reachable for maintenance.
If runoff cannot be managed legally and safely at the chosen site, change the drainage approach or location before regular use. Fine Homebuilding’s guidance discusses local gray-water requirements and maintenance access; it does not establish one drain design that is appropriate everywhere.

In climates with freezing temperatures, make winter shutdown part of the installation plan. Fine Homebuilding advises draining pipes before the first frost. The exact routine depends on the fixture and supply arrangement, so follow the manufacturer’s directions rather than assuming one method fits every shower.

When a ready-made kit may make sense
A kit can be worth considering when you want integrated hot-and-cold control and a coordinated set of shower components. Aquor’s Backyard Shower Kit bundles a hydrant and handheld components, but its manufacturer recommends a professional plumber for the hot-and-cold hydrant. Check the current product listing, installation requirements, and compatibility with your supply lines before choosing it.
For a freestanding cold-water fixture, the Outdoor Shower Company documents units using a 1/2-inch supply line and provides model-specific assembly and winterization instructions. Confirm the current model details before relying on them. Neither product option removes the need to plan drainage, privacy, access, and local compliance.
