Yes—you can turn modular felt tiles into a graphic feature wall while reducing reverberation in the room. The reliable approach is to treat the tiles as porous sound absorbers first and as a visual system second: choose a documented product, design the pattern around the room, and install it exactly as the manufacturer specifies.

Felt tiles will not stop voices, music, or impact noise travelling through a wall. They improve the sound field on the treated side by absorbing reflected energy, so conversations, video calls, and music can sound less harsh and less “live.”

What decorative acoustic tiles actually do

Most decorative acoustic tiles used for feature walls are porous felt panels. Their open fibre structure converts a portion of incident sound energy into very small amounts of heat, reducing reflections that would otherwise bounce between hard surfaces. The result is lower reverberation inside the room, not a new soundproof partition.

That distinction matters during design. If the problem is echo in a dining room, studio, office, classroom, or media room, absorption is relevant. If the problem is a neighbour hearing your television, a bedroom above a noisy workshop, or plumbing noise passing through a party wall, you need an isolation assembly—mass, airtight layers, decoupling, and sometimes resilient channels. A felt tile attached to the visible surface cannot provide that construction.

ACOUSTELIO makes the distinction plainly on its product page: an acoustic board or wall tile is “an absorber, not a soundproofing barrier.” That is a manufacturer explanation, not a universal performance guarantee, so use it to set expectations rather than as a substitute for a tested wall assembly. See the product description at ACOUSTELIO’s made-to-measure PET felt panels.

Pick a tile format that suits the wall and the pattern

Modularity is what lets a treatment read as architecture or art. Before choosing colour, check the actual dimensions and thickness: a square grid creates a different visual rhythm from a narrow brick-like repeat, and thickness affects both the acoustic specification and the depth of the finished wall.

Documented option Material Published size Thickness What the format is useful for
TileFlex PET felt 600 × 600 mm 9 mm Large square fields, checkerboards, diagonals, and low-waste modular grids
TileExclusive PET felt 148 × 444 mm 12 mm Linear bands, running-bond layouts, herringbone ideas, and fine-grained graphic repeats
Custom made-to-measure panel PET felt Set by the manufacturer Set by the manufacturer Single-image murals, logos, or a composition that must fit doors, niches, or columns

The two Feltdecor formats are examples, not interchangeable specifications. Their different thicknesses, edge geometry, and exposed area mean you should not assume that a 600 mm square tile absorbs the same way as a 148 × 444 mm tile. Request the technical sheet for the exact colour, thickness, and mounting configuration you intend to buy.

Read an acoustic number in its test context

The most commonly quoted summary number for porous panels is the noise reduction coefficient (NRC). It is useful for comparing products only when the test method, thickness, mounting, and air space are comparable. A bare number without those conditions can lead to an overconfident design.

For example, the 2025 DeFelt technical specification reports thickness-specific NRC values of 0.32 for 9 mm panels, 0.45 for 12 mm panels, and 0.80 for 24 mm panels. Those figures belong to the products and test conditions described in that document; they are not a rating for every PET tile on the market.

ACOUSTELIO reports NRC 0.80 for a 9 mm panel tested in a reverberation room under ISO 354 with a 100 mm air cavity. The cavity is a critical part of the setup. A panel fixed directly to a wall, or a panel from another manufacturer, may perform differently even if it is also 9 mm thick. Its published result is documented at the ACOUSTELIO wall-panel page.

  • Match the reported thickness to the tile you are specifying.
  • Check whether the test used direct mounting, a frame, or an air cavity.
  • Confirm the test method and laboratory conditions; ISO 354 is a reverberation-room method.
  • Use the result to compare like with like, not to promise a particular decibel reduction in a different room.

Design the accent wall before ordering tiles

Map the wall and its interruptions

Measure the finished wall, then mark windows, outlets, switches, radiators, skirting boards, doors, and access panels. Draw those obstacles at scale on graph paper or in a simple CAD layout. A 600 mm module may align neatly on one wall but leave awkward slivers around a door; a narrower module may solve that without excessive cutting.

Choose a visual grammar

Limit the composition to a repeatable rule so it looks intentional from across the room. Common approaches include a monochrome relief, two or three tones in a checkerboard, a gradient from dark to light, a running bond, diagonal bands, or a single contrasting “path” crossing a quiet field. Keep a full tile at the focal edges where possible and place unavoidable cuts behind furniture or at corners.

Use colour to control emphasis

Dark, saturated tiles advance visually; pale tiles recede. A high-contrast pattern becomes the room’s main artwork, while close tones create texture that supports paintings, shelving, or a television. Order physical samples because felt colour shifts with pile direction and daylight. Record the orientation of each sample so the final installation does not show unintended shade changes.

Decide whether the pattern is removable

If you rent, expect to reconfigure the wall, or need access to services, favour a system that can be detached without damaging the substrate. If the wall is permanent and the pattern is custom-cut, a mechanically fixed or manufacturer-designed magnetic system may be more appropriate than a permanent adhesive.

Plan acoustic coverage around the room’s reflections

Do not automatically cover the entire wall. The best location depends on where strong reflections arrive. In a listening room, first-reflection areas on the side walls and ceiling can be more important than the wall behind the speakers. In a workspace, a broad treatment behind the desk or on the wall opposite a hard conference table can shorten flutter echoes. In a dining area, treating one large uninterrupted surface often improves speech clarity without making the room acoustically dead.

Walk the room and clap once, or speak while another person moves around it. A bright, ringing tail indicates reverberation; a fluttering “ping” between two parallel hard surfaces suggests that opposing surfaces need attention. This listening check helps choose the wall, but it does not replace an acoustic calculation for a recording studio or a code-sensitive project.

Leave some reflective area for liveliness. Combine felt with books, curtains, upholstered seating, rugs, or plants rather than covering every surface with the same panel. If the room still sounds harsh after one wall, add treatment at another reflection zone instead of simply increasing tile density in one spot.

Installation methods and when to use them

Manufacturers describe several fixing approaches: adhesive or self-adhesive backing, mechanical fasteners, and purpose-designed magnetic systems. The correct choice depends on tile weight, backing, wall finish, humidity, removability, and whether the product has been tested with an air cavity.

Adhesive or self-adhesive backing

Adhesive is fast on a clean, sound, painted surface. Dust, chalking paint, grease, textured wallpaper, and damp masonry reduce bond strength. Dry-fit the complete pattern first, use the manufacturer’s recommended adhesive quantity and open time, and provide temporary support while it cures. Never assume a generic construction adhesive is compatible with PET felt or with a fire-rated substrate.

Mechanical fasteners

Screws, clips, or pins make individual tiles replaceable and are useful where the substrate is uneven or future access matters. Locate studs, masonry anchors, or approved battens before setting out the pattern. Countersunk heads or colour-matched caps keep the hardware from becoming a visual distraction.

Magnetic systems

The 2024 DeFelt installation guide describes a magnetic-sheet approach that uses adhesive and requires curing. Follow its stated preparation, curing time, and load limits; a magnetic sheet is a designed system, not a reason to substitute ordinary craft magnets.

Step-by-step installation workflow

  1. Verify the substrate. Confirm that the wall is dry, clean, structurally sound, and compatible with the selected fixing method. Repair loose paint and fill holes before layout.
  2. Condition the tiles. Store them flat in the installation room so temperature and humidity are stable. Keep protective packaging on until the wall is ready.
  3. Set a datum. Use a laser or spirit level to mark a horizontal and vertical reference. Do not rely on a skirting board or ceiling, which may not be level.
  4. Dry-lay the composition. Place every tile on the floor in order, including cuts. Photograph the arrangement and label the reverse sides if the pattern has directional colour or custom shapes.
  5. Mark service clearances. Transfer outlet, switch, vent, and access-panel positions to the tile layout. Maintain the clearances required for electrical and heating equipment.
  6. Cut safely. Use the tool and blade recommended by the manufacturer for straight cuts and openings. For intricate shapes, have the supplier perform digital or laser cutting rather than improvising on the wall.
  7. Install from the datum. Fix the first row or central feature, checking level and spacing after every few tiles. Work outward so small discrepancies are absorbed at the least visible edges.
  8. Allow full cure. Do not hang objects, press edges, or clean the surface until the adhesive or magnetic backing has reached the stated cure time.
  9. Inspect the finished field. Check joints, corners, colour orientation, and access to services. Keep spare tiles labelled for future repairs.

Turn tiles into acoustic art

Art-like treatment can be achieved with stock modules, but custom fabrication opens more possibilities. DeFelt describes digital cutting, laser cutting, and direct printing for PET panels in its technical materials. ACOUSTELIO offers made-to-measure panels printed to order. Use those capabilities to translate a line drawing, topographic contour, abstract gradient, or carefully scaled image into a wall-sized composition; verify the proof at full scale before production.

Ask the fabricator for a vector proof, tile map, colour references, bleed or seam allowances, and the final mounting plan. A printed image may read differently when divided across modules, so review the joins rather than approving only a single-panel sample. For a relief effect, combine shallow and deeper pieces, but keep the thickness and mounting details documented because changing either can alter the acoustic result.

PET felt or wool felt?

PET felt is documented in the modular TileFlex and TileExclusive products and in the technical specifications cited above. Wool felt is another decorative option; FilzFelt’s Turn collection demonstrates wool-felt acoustic design. Material alone does not establish acoustic performance. Compare the exact panel’s thickness, density, edge treatment, mounting, fire information, cleaning guidance, and test report.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Expecting sound isolation: Reframe the goal as reverberation control. For transmission between rooms, redesign the wall or ceiling assembly.
  • Comparing unlike NRC values: Put thickness, air gap, mounting, and test method beside every number before deciding.
  • Ignoring the substrate: Test a small hidden area for adhesion and remove dust, loose paint, and moisture before full installation.
  • Starting without a full-size layout: Dry-lay the pattern and account for outlets, corners, and door casings before ordering.
  • Creating an overly dead room: Treat reflection zones selectively and retain some hard, diffusing, or naturally absorptive surfaces.
  • Cutting after the tiles are fixed: Pre-cut service openings and custom shapes whenever possible; late cutting risks ragged edges and pattern errors.
  • Assuming a product page is permanent: Reconfirm dimensions, colours, mounting instructions, and test documents at the time of purchase. The cited DeFelt specification dates from 2025 and its installation guide from 2024.

A specification checklist for your contractor or supplier

Put the following information in the quotation or submittal so the visual and acoustic intent survives procurement:

  • Exact product name, material, colour, module dimensions, and thickness.
  • Area to be covered, number of tiles, spare-tile allowance, and all cut dimensions.
  • Published acoustic rating with its test method, mounting condition, and air-cavity depth.
  • Substrate type, surface preparation, adhesive or fastener specification, and curing time.
  • Fire, moisture, cleaning, and electrical-clearance requirements applicable to the project.
  • Pattern drawing, tile numbering, colour orientation, and a full-size proof for printed or custom-cut artwork.
  • Access strategy for outlets, inspection panels, and any tile that may need replacement.

When these details are documented, a felt-tile accent wall can perform two jobs honestly: it becomes a deliberate focal surface and it makes the treated room less reverberant. The acoustic benefit comes from the tested panel and its installation; the artwork comes from the layout, colour, and fabrication decisions you control.
