To build a wooden multi-roll tape dispenser, size the frame and roll supports around the tape you own, then fit a securely mounted cutting edge across the front. There is no standard plan: examples use wooden dowels or repurposed plastic holders, and their dimensions should not be treated as interchangeable.
Choose a layout that fits your tape
Before cutting wood, decide how many rolls you want to hold and measure each roll’s width, outside diameter, and core opening. Those measurements determine the dispenser’s width, the clearance between rolls, and the axle or holder arrangement. Also consider where it will sit: a larger base may improve stability but take up more bench space.
- Wooden dowel axles: Side panels support dowels through the roll cores. This is the approach described by Ideas2Live4 and used in the GET HANDS DIRTY multi-roll project. Check that the axle diameter fits the cores and that the rolls can be removed for reloading.
- Repurposed holders: SMD Paper Arts used plastic tube holders taken from a Scotch Washi Tape dispenser. In that build, holder length helped determine the dispenser width; this is a compact reuse option if the holders suit your rolls.
Leave enough lateral clearance that adjacent rolls do not rub. Ideas2Live4 suggests roughly 1/4 inch between rolls, but that is a dimension from its guide, not a universal requirement. Lay out your actual rolls and supports before drilling.

- Scrap 3/4-inch timber or plywood for the base and side panels
- A 3/4-inch wooden dowel for axles, if that diameter fits your tape cores
- A hacksaw blade for the cutter
- Wood glue and wood screws
- A saw, measuring tape, drill, and clamps
These are example materials and tools, not mandatory specifications. Choose wood thickness, fasteners, and axle dimensions for your layout and available tools. A different project by Dremel is a single-roll dispenser, not a multi-roll plan; it lists oak, a metal rod and mounts, a hacksaw blade, screws, a drill, and specific Dremel tools: Dremel’s tape dispenser project.
Size and build the frame
Lay out the base and side panels
Mark the roll positions on the base, including the gaps, side-panel thickness, and room at the front for the cutter. Check that the footprint is stable where you intend to use the dispenser. The base must also provide enough depth for the rolls to turn without striking the front lip or the surface behind the dispenser.

One example—not a universal plan—is the SMD Paper Arts dispenser: its pine base measures 9 1/4 inches wide, 3 3/8 inches deep, and 3/4 inch tall. Its two side pieces are each 4 inches tall, 2 3/8 inches deep, and 3/4 inch wide. Those measurements belong to that maker’s setup, which used repurposed plastic holders.
Drill aligned axle holes
For dowel axles, mark matching hole positions on both side panels so each dowel sits level. Drill the holes only after checking the height and spacing against the rolls. A 3/4-inch dowel is specified by Ideas2Live4, but confirm the diameter against your roll cores and the fit of your drilled holes. Dry-fit the frame and supports with the rolls in place before gluing or fastening everything permanently.

Assemble and check roll movement
Attach the side panels to the base with glue and screws, keeping them square and parallel. Fit the dowels or holders, load the rolls, and turn each one by hand. Correct any rubbing or binding before adding the cutter; the rolls should feed tape toward the front without contacting one another or the frame.

The cited multi-roll examples use hacksaw blades; GET HANDS DIRTY describes its project as using acrylic, wood, and a bandsaw blade. A blade must be held securely, and the tape should reach it cleanly without the roll or frame obstructing the pull. Position the cutter to suit the dispenser’s location and how it will be handled. The examples do not establish a universally safe mounting method or a comparative cutter test, so do not assume one mounting approach is proven best.

SMD Paper Arts wired a hacksaw blade to a thin front pine piece. Treat that as the method in that specific build, not a general fastening recommendation. Before use, check that the cutting edge cannot shift during a pull and that the dispenser itself remains stable.
