An old carport can provide a starting frame for a greenhouse, but its past use does not prove it can safely support an enclosure. Before attaching plastic or glazing, assess the frame and anchorage, check local rules, and account for how covering, doors, vents, wind and snow change the structure’s demands.
Can an old carport frame work as a greenhouse?
Possibly—but suitability depends on the specific frame, its condition and connections, how it is anchored, local weather, and the greenhouse design. Enclosing an open-sided carport changes how wind acts on it. New covering, framing, doors, vents, hanging equipment and accumulated snow can also affect loads.
Greenhouse design takes dead and live loads, wind and snow into account. Wind effects vary with factors including shape, orientation, exposure, height and whether doors or vents are open. A general guide cannot establish that a particular carport is adequate; when the frame’s capacity is uncertain, or the conversion materially changes its exposure or loading, have an appropriately qualified local professional review it against local conditions.
What to inspect before planning the enclosure
Document what is there before buying covering or changing the frame. Take photographs and measurements, and note the condition of components and connections.

- Frame: Identify the material, member sizes and spacing, roof geometry, and any existing bracing.
- Connections: Check how members join, whether connectors are loose or damaged, and how the frame meets its bases.
- Anchorage and foundation: Record how posts are attached and what they bear on. Look for movement or signs that posts or foundations have shifted.
- Condition: Look for corrosion, rot, bent or cracked members, loose connections and other deterioration.
- Planned use: Decide whether the greenhouse will be seasonal or year-round, what you intend to grow, whether it will be climate-controlled or irrigated, and whether plants or equipment will hang from the frame.
These observations help define the review and design work. They are not a substitute for checking the structure’s capacity.
Check permits and zoning before altering the carport
Requirements depend on your location, the structure and the proposed work. Enclosing an existing carport or altering its structural members or materials may be treated differently from building a new accessory structure. Before proceeding, ask your local building or planning office about permits, zoning, setbacks, enclosure rules and whether structural plans or review are required.

Local rules can differ substantially: Toronto and Raleigh, for example, publish different local requirements and thresholds for accessory structures. Those examples do not determine what applies elsewhere. Give the authority your location, dimensions, existing structure details and proposed changes so it can direct you to the rules for your project.
Choose covering and attachment only after checking the frame
Greenhouse plastic film is one possible covering category, but the phrase alone does not identify a suitable product or attachment method for a particular carport. Film dimensions, thickness, UV life, fastening system and compatibility with the frame have not been established for your project. Glazing or another covering brings its own weight and attachment considerations.

Decide on a covering after the frame and local weather have been assessed. Then choose compatible framing, fasteners, doors and vents as part of the same design. Do not assume that material suitable for a conventional greenhouse will be suitable for an older carport frame or its exposure. Wind can damage the covering and connections as well as the supporting structure.
Plan ventilation and severe-weather operation together
A greenhouse needs a heat-management plan, but openings also affect the structure in high winds. Vent type, size and operating approach depend on greenhouse dimensions, climate and intended use; without those details, a specific vent area or fan capacity cannot be responsibly specified.

Consider passive or fan-assisted ventilation only after estimating the greenhouse’s needs. Also plan how doors, vents, shutters and covering will be secured for severe weather. Extension guidance advises closing openings in high winds; include that action in the operating plan rather than treating ventilation and storm preparation as separate decisions.

Snow load depends on more than depth: water content can make snow of the same depth substantially different in weight. UConn Extension’s September 2023 fact sheet gives explanatory examples: 12 inches of light, fluffy snow may equal 1 inch of rainwater, while 3 inches of wet snow may equal 1 inch of rainwater. UConn also states that 1 inch of rainwater equivalent corresponds to 5.2 pounds per square foot. These examples illustrate variability; they are not universal snow-depth conversions or a design rating for a carport.

- Reinforced 140g/m2 PE grid cover is UV 80+, protects your plants from UV damage, 100% waterproof, increases the service life 2 times: most cover is UV protection level 3, only lasts for 3-6 month, the cover last for over 1 year. The PE cover is odorless, so you can work in the green house without worry. After thousands of tests, the size of the cover fit the frame closely, it enhanced the warmth and wind resistance in winter.
- Supported by powder-coated finish heavy duty steel frame, our tunnel green house is more durable and anti-rust than those whose frames are galvanized
Wind can rack a frame, bend members, break glazing, tear plastic or lift foundation posts. UConn Extension’s wind-load guidance, updated October 2024, illustrates how large forces can be: its example of a 10-foot-by-100-foot windward glass-greenhouse sidewall at the pressure used in that example faces about 14,900 pounds of force. That is a context-specific illustration, not a value to apply to another greenhouse. Your local conditions and the proposed structure need their own assessment.
Because the consequences of a weak frame or anchorage can be serious, do not treat an intact-looking carport or a covering’s advertised strength as proof that the completed greenhouse will withstand local weather. Have uncertain capacity reviewed before enclosing it.
Quick Recap
A practical conversion-planning sequence
- Photograph and measure the existing carport. Record its dimensions, frame material, member sizes and spacing, roof geometry, connections, bases, anchorage and condition.
- Define the greenhouse use. Set out seasonal or year-round operation, intended crops, climate control, irrigation and any equipment or plants that will hang from the structure.
- Ask the local authority about rules. Confirm permits, zoning, setbacks, enclosure requirements and any required plans or structural review before changing the building.
- Get a structural review where needed. If adequacy is uncertain or the enclosure changes exposure or loading materially, ask an appropriately qualified local professional to assess the frame and anchorage for local wind and snow conditions.
- Select the enclosure components as a system. Choose covering, framing and fasteners, doors and vents after the structure and local conditions are understood.
- Plan ventilation and storm procedures. Establish an approach suitable for the greenhouse’s size and climate, and decide how openings and covering will be secured before severe weather.
- Establish safe snow-management practices. Base them on the structure’s design and local conditions rather than on a generic snow-depth conversion.
