Aim for about 3 feet on each side if you want a hot-compost pile; that one-cubic-yard size helps retain heat, but a bin is optional and smaller or slower composting setups may work differently.
Choose a layout and size
Two common pallet designs suit different needs. A simple enclosure is quicker to assemble; a more structured holding unit adds posts and spaced boards. Both can be made with four pallets, and either can have a removable front to make turning easier.
| Design | Construction | Access and use |
|---|---|---|
| Simple enclosure | Stand four pallets upright and fasten them at the corners. The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension’s FSA-6031 plan specifies at least 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet. | Keep the front removable or hinged for easier access and turning. |
| Structured holding unit | The UF/IFAS plan uses four pallets, corner posts and horizontal boards spaced to admit air; a bottom pallet is optional. | More involved to build. UF/IFAS notes that turning is difficult if the front panel cannot be removed. |
For hot composting, a pile around 3 feet × 3 feet × 3 feet (one cubic yard) helps hold heat, according to University of Nevada, Reno Extension. This is guidance for that method, not a universal minimum for composting. A second bay can give you a place to transfer material as you turn it, but it is not essential.
Choose a site and gather materials
Set the bin on level, well-drained ground where it is convenient to reach with garden tools and water. Check local rules or neighborhood requirements for placement and size before building; Virginia Cooperative Extension advises checking applicable local requirements.

- ✅Speed Up Composing Process: More advanced models use rotating to bring oxygen to the center of the bin and paddles inside the chamber to help mix and aerate the composting materials when turned. These improvements or modifications are designed for one reason: to speed the composting process.
- ✅How do Compost Tumblers work? Simple. You load them with green and brown waste from your yard and kitchen. When full, you give them time to work, in other words, heat up. Turning a compost pile mixing the organic materials and the organisms it contains with heat-producing oxygen is the traditional method of keeping the process going full steam. By turning the tumbler, the organic materials are mixed and infused with fresh oxygen.
- ✅Easy to Access Finished Compost: Just Slide the door open and take the organic fertilizer out when the compost is ready. When a check reveals the compost is complete —and this can happen in a matter of weeks —the same access that allowed you to fill the tumbler lets you empty it. Now is the time to spread the results.
- ✅Dual-Bin Design: The dual bin design takes a different approach to the continuous-use composted concept, Two bins are set side-by-side into a single rotating chamber. Thickly insulated compartments conserve the heat generating by the decaying matter, and this greatly speeds the process. This design also allows you to add food waste to one chamber while the other is composting.
- ✅Totally Organic and Money-Saving: If you're looking for a fast, convenient way to compost your kitchen throw-outs, grass clippings, and organic yard waste, our outdoor kitchen compost bin is just right for you! The Compact Compost Tumbler quickly recycles it into nutrient-rich compost.
For the simple enclosure, gather four pallets and fasteners suited to their thickness and your layout. Arkansas Extension lists nails, screws or wire as options. The more structured UF/IFAS plan calls for lumber and galvanized nails, and its tool list includes a saw, sledgehammer, claw hammer and work gloves. You do not need every item from both plans: choose materials for the design you are building. A bottom pallet is optional; let drainage and access at your site guide that choice.
Choose sound, clean pallets and avoid material that is visibly contaminated. The cited plans do not establish a universal pallet-safety marking rule or a guaranteed service life, so inspect the wood rather than assuming every pallet is suitable.

- Twin chambers: Two separate chambers allow one side to finish composting while leaving the other side available to add fresh wastes; Constant alternation of the two sides will create an uninterrupted stream of nutritious compost
- 360⁰ Tumbling Design: The rotating design prevents you from digging or mixing the pile by hand; And the deep fins on eight panels make it easier to turn the compost bin
- Excellent Aeration: Air vents can make the air fully circulate and will not cause an explosion due to excessive internal pressure; Deep fins can better break the clumps, which is conducive to the full fermentation of oxygen
- Sturdy & Durable Construction: Constructed of premium metal frame and high-quality pp plastic body, this tumbling composter is corrosion-resistant, weathering-resistant, sturdy, and durable for long-lasting service life
- Garden Gloves Included: The gloves that not only protect your hands from injury, but are also waterproof, making them easy to clean; With 4 durable ABS plastic claws for easy digging, planting and other gardening work
Build the four-pallet bin
- Prepare the site. Clear a level area with good drainage and room to reach the bin, add water and turn the contents.
- Arrange the sides. Stand four pallets upright as a square, with three sides fixed and the fourth at the front. Leave the front removable or make it hinged so you can access the pile.
- Fasten the corners. Join each adjacent pair with nails, screws or wire appropriate to the pallet construction. Check that the enclosure stands steadily before loading it.
- Add a base only if useful. A bottom pallet is optional. Consider whether it will help at your site without compromising drainage or access to the pile.
- Load the bin loosely. Add compost materials without packing them tightly. Leave room to water and aerate the pile.
For a structured holding unit, follow the same site and access principles, then use posts and spaced horizontal boards to form the sides as described in the UF/IFAS plan. Its layout is more involved than simply fastening pallet corners, so choose it when you want that additional structure.
Make compost in the bin
The enclosure contains the material; it does not make finished compost by itself. University of Maryland Extension describes hot composting as requiring a suitable mix of carbon-rich “browns,” nitrogen-rich “greens,” water and air. Under suitable conditions, thermophilic microbes can generate temperatures of 130–170°F, and the method may produce compost in six to eight weeks. These are the Extension’s guidance figures, not a promised temperature or completion time for a newly built bin.

Aeration and access matter as the pile changes. Remove the front to turn material, or use an aerating probe such as rebar, an option mentioned by UF/IFAS. If you want to transfer material while turning it, a second bay can provide a separate space for the active pile and material that is maturing.

A pallet bin is a way to contain compost and help keep it within a chosen footprint, but composting does not require an enclosure. University of Nevada, Reno Extension explains that a pile can be made without a bin. If you prefer not to build, manufactured compost bins are another option; Arkansas Extension notes that they are sold through hardware stores, garden suppliers and online.
