There is no single plan that serves both. Use one design’s dimensions and parts consistently: Wayne of the Woods’ full-size plan can be adapted for a bookcase, while RONA’s plank-sided project and Popular Mechanics’ plan are decorative props.
Choose a plan for the job
Before buying materials, decide whether the finished coffin is a seasonal prop or furniture. A prop can be built for display; a bookcase must be designed to carry books and secured against tipping. Do not combine dimensions or parts from different plans into an improvised hybrid.

Compare designs by intended load, footprint, shelf depth and support, lid and hinge arrangement, finish, and whether the completed case needs anchoring. The listed materials and dimensions are plan-specific; use the selected plan’s full bill of materials rather than treating this comparison as a combined cut list.
Tools and preparation
The plans involve saws and drilling. Wayne of the Woods describes a circular saw and guide for straight cuts; RONA lists a miter saw, orbital sander and drill. Popular Mechanics recommends temporary fitting and test cuts when setting miters. Gather the tools called for by your plan, support and secure workpieces, and follow each tool and material maker’s safety instructions, including appropriate eye and respiratory protection.

Print or draw the chosen design at full scale and confirm the finished footprint will fit its display location or room. If it must pass through a doorway or along a narrow route, check that route before cutting. Wayne of the Woods recommends making a paper template for transferring the outline and provides angles for its six side pieces.
Build the coffin shell
- Transfer the outline. Mark the selected plan’s dimensions on its specified plywood or boards. Keep the template and each part labeled so tapered pieces are not confused.
- Cut the base and sides. Use a guided circular saw for appropriate long straight cuts; make miters with the saw and method specified by the plan. Secure the material and make a test cut or temporary fit before committing to repeated angled cuts.
- Dry-fit the assembly. Set the side pieces against the base and check alignment before fastening. Correct gaps or mismatches now rather than forcing the sides into place during assembly.
- Fasten the sides to the bottom. Follow the chosen plan’s method. Wayne of the Woods describes glue and/or screws, with countersunk screw holes. Do not substitute another plan’s fastening pattern without confirming it suits the materials and intended use.
- Sand and finish. Smooth the assembled surfaces, then paint or stain as appropriate for the display setting and the finish product’s instructions.
Adapt the Wayne plan into a bookcase
A bookcase requires planned shelf supports, shelves sized to the tapered interior, and an anchored back. Wayne of the Woods describes shelf channels and brackets as an option; it also describes a removable solid shelf. Follow that design’s shelf arrangement rather than assuming the shell alone will support books.

- Install the planned shelf channels or brackets in the locations specified by the design.
- Measure the usable width at each shelf position because the sides taper; cut each shelf to fit its own opening.
- Attach the back panel and secure the completed bookcase to a wall stud as the plan directs.
A decorative prop should not be used as load-bearing furniture unless it has been built and secured for that purpose. The cited plans do not establish that every version, material substitution or assembly method is safe for every load or setting.
Add a lid or Halloween details
If the selected design includes a lid, trace and cut it to that plan’s dimensions. Add hinges only if the lid is intended to open; Wayne of the Woods lists a 48-inch piano hinge as an option. RONA’s project uses decorative hinges. LED string lights are an optional decoration suggested by RONA. Keep decorative choices separate from structural requirements, especially on a bookcase.

What the build estimates do—and do not—tell you
Northwoods Casket Company estimates 8–10 hours for an experienced DIY woodworker building its first coffin design and $200–$300 depending on local lumber prices and wood choice. Those are estimates for its own coffin project, not a current general budget or schedule for a Halloween prop or bookcase. The company also reports that its design was tested with up to 300 lbs; that figure applies only to its own design and is not a load rating for the plans above.
