For a beginner, a homemade “biosphere” is best understood as a closed plant terrarium: a clear container with plants and growing medium that recycles much of its water. It is a small plant ecosystem, not a self-sustaining replica of Earth. The guide below covers that project; an aquatic ecosphere with animals is a different undertaking.
Choose a container and decide whether it should be open or closed
Use a clean, transparent jar or bottle that can be closed with a lid. A wide opening makes it easier to place plants and adjust them; a narrow bottle can work, but long-handled tweezers and patience help. A reused household container is fine if it is clean and intact.
| Container | Best fit | Plant and care implications |
|---|---|---|
| Closed, with a lid | Plants that tolerate humid conditions | Water cycles inside, so watering is usually infrequent. Excess water cannot be poured out easily. |
| Open, without a lid | Dry-loving plants such as cacti and succulents | More airflow; moisture escapes, so the container does not retain water like a closed terrarium. |
For the closed, water-cycling project described here, choose small humidity-tolerant plants such as ferns or nerve plants. Select plants with similar light and moisture needs, and preferably slow growth. Do not put cacti or succulents in a closed humid jar: they are prone to rot there. See Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s terrarium care guide for additional care guidance.
Gather the materials
- A clean, clear jar or bottle with a lid
- Clean gravel or pebbles
- Horticultural charcoal, optional
- Clean or sterile potting mix
- Small plants suited to a humid environment
- Water and, optionally, a mister
- Optional moss or clean decorative objects
- Optional scissors or snips and long-handled tweezers, especially for a narrow opening
The gravel layer creates a space for excess water; it does not drain water out of a closed vessel. The Mississippi State University Extension example uses a 2-gallon glass jar with 1 inch of gravel, about ¼ inch of charcoal, and about 2 inches of soil mix. These are example amounts, not universal ratios. UF/IFAS Extension suggests a gravel layer from ½ inch (1.3 cm) to 1½ inches (3.8 cm), depending on vessel size. Adjust layers to the container and the size of the plants’ root balls. For the UF/IFAS instructions, see Plants and Youth: Designing and Building a Terrarium.

Build the terrarium
- Wash the container. Rinse away residue and let it dry. Make sure the lid fits and the glass is clear.
- Add gravel. Spread a modest, even layer across the bottom. It is a reservoir space for excess water, not a substitute for a drain.
- Add charcoal if using it. Scatter a thin layer over the gravel.
- Add potting mix. Make a layer deep enough to cover the roots. Shape the surface if you want plants at different heights.
- Arrange the plants. Make small planting spaces, set each plant’s roots into the mix, and cover them. Leave room between plants and keep foliage from pressing against the glass where possible.
- Moisten carefully. Mist or add a small amount of water until the soil is moist, not saturated.
- Clean and close. Wipe soil and debris from the inside glass, then fit the lid.
Start with less water than you think you need. Mississippi State University Extension puts the key limitation plainly: “Water can always be carefully added to the terrarium, but it cannot be drained from it.” Its closed-system terrarium instructions provide the jar measurements above.
Place it in suitable light and balance moisture
Set the jar in bright, indirect light. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from places where heat can build up inside the glass. Light supplies energy for photosynthesis; the lid does not make the terrarium independent of light or occasional care.

In a closed terrarium, water evaporates from the soil and is released by plants through transpiration. It condenses on the walls or lid and returns to the soil. This recycling can reduce how often you need to water, but it does not guarantee a permanently self-sustaining system. The right balance depends on the plants, soil, container, and light, so check the plants and soil rather than following a fixed watering calendar.
- Light condensation that clears or shifts over the day: observe the container and avoid adding water unless the soil is becoming dry.
- Heavy condensation that persists: open the lid briefly to let some moisture escape, then close it again.
- Dry soil or wilting plants: add a little water, then reassess instead of saturating the mix.
- Plants crowding the jar or touching the glass: trim them or remove a plant as needed.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Overwatering at setup: a closed vessel has no drain, and excess water is difficult to remove.
- Assuming gravel drains the container: it provides space for excess water but does not carry it away.
- Choosing plants for appearance alone: mismatched light or moisture needs make it harder to keep the plants healthy.
- Using succulents in a humid closed jar: use an open container for plants adapted to drier conditions.
- Putting the jar in direct sun: heat can accumulate inside the glass.
- Expecting a sealed jar to need no attention forever: monitor moisture, ventilate briefly when condensation stays heavy, and prune or remove plants as they grow.
