How to Build a Catapult, Part 2: Triggers and Releases for a Classroom Model

A trigger controls when a model catapult arm moves. Learn how to release it consistently, run a fair classroom test, and keep launches low-energy and safe.

A trigger or release controls when a loaded catapult arm is allowed to move. For a small educational model, the useful goal is a clean, repeatable release—not a powerful launch. The restraint depends on the model, so follow its instructions and use the release as part of a controlled experiment.

What a trigger does

A trigger holds the arm in its loaded position until you choose to release it. Once released, the arm moves and launches the projectile. Different models use different ways to restrain and release the arm; there is no single trigger design that applies to every catapult.

For example, a student project documented by MIT OpenCourseWare describes release as a challenge in a spring-powered model and illustrates a string-based mechanism. That is one project example, not a general design standard.

Why a consistent release matters

If you are comparing launches, release the arm in the same way each time. A repeatable release makes it easier to interpret differences in the results rather than differences caused by how the model was let go.

In its grades 7–9 “Catapults!” activity, TeachEngineering has students pull a model arm back to selected angles, launch a cotton ball, and record outcomes. The activity explores the relationship between arm angle and the cotton ball’s flight, including flight height and distance. Treat angle as a variable to test: the activity does not establish one universally best launch angle.

Run a simple, controlled test

  1. Set up the model as directed. Use the model maker’s instructions and its intended low-energy classroom configuration.
  2. Choose one setting to change. For example, test different arm angles while keeping the model and projectile the same.
  3. Use the same release each time. Bring the arm to the chosen setting, operate its release as instructed, and avoid adding an extra push.
  4. Record what happens. Measure or note flight distance and height as the activity directs.
  5. Compare trials. Look at how the observed outcomes change with the setting you varied.

This approach reflects the activity’s focus on force and motion, including Newton’s second law. It also helps separate the effect of a chosen setting from inconsistent handling.

Keep launches safe and low-energy

  • Use soft, lightweight projectiles. TeachEngineering’s activity uses a cotton ball; its instructions recommend safety glasses if students use other projectiles.
  • Establish a controlled firing direction before launching, and make sure everyone knows where the model is aimed.
  • Never point the model at anyone’s face. LEGO Education cautions: “Be careful not to let students point the catapult toward anybody’s face when catapulting the rubber tire.” See its catapult lesson.
  • Follow the instructions for the specific model. The Eli Whitney Museum & Workshop describes its rubber-band-powered model as safe when used with the supplied ping-pong ball; that assurance applies to that model and projectile.

Other classroom contexts

Catapult activities can connect release tests to broader design questions. TeachEngineering’s “Right on Target: Catapult Game” asks students to design, test, and refine models for launching ping-pong balls at targets. The Intrepid Museum’s grades 6–8 activity connects catapults with aircraft-launch systems on USS Intrepid, offering historical and engineering context without specifying technical details of those systems.
