You can build a campfire safely only when the land manager allows one under current conditions. Check restrictions first, use the approved fire area, keep the fire small and attended, and extinguish it with water until every coal is cold to the touch.

1. Check that fires are allowed today

Before gathering fuel or lighting a match, check the campground or land manager’s current fire restrictions, permitted locations, and any rules about when fires may be used. Rules can change with weather and fire danger. If open fires are prohibited, use an allowed alternative such as a camp stove; the National Park Service recommends considering a propane stove during high fire danger (NPS visitor fire safety).

2. Use the approved fire place

Build only in a provided or designated fire ring, grill, or other approved location. Do not make a new rock ring or dig a pit unless the site authority expressly permits it. Requirements vary by location: Joshua Tree, for example, requires metal rings or grills in areas where fires are allowed, while Lake Meredith’s 2025–2026 Superintendent’s Compendium prohibits new rock rings and dug pits. Follow the rules for your specific site rather than assuming a ring is acceptable everywhere.

3. Clear the area and stage safely

Keep tents, equipment, and other flammable items well away and, where possible, upwind. Avoid placing a fire beneath overhanging branches or beside dry grass, leaves, rotten stumps, or on a slope where it could spread. Use the clearance distances required by your site: general NPS campfire guidance says to keep tents and gear at least 15 feet away, while Yosemite’s guidance calls for clearing vegetation at least 10 feet in all directions. These address different hazards; neither is a universal rule for every campsite.

4. Gather permitted fuel and ignition materials

Prepare tinder or an approved firestarter, small kindling, and larger firewood before lighting. Use only fuel permitted at the site, and favor locally sourced firewood where allowed. Do not burn trash or synthetic materials. Keep water nearby from the start so it is ready if the fire needs to be extinguished or escapes control.

5. Start small, then add wood gradually

Arrange tinder or a firestarter so it can catch the kindling, then light it with a match or lighter. Add larger pieces only after the smaller fuel is burning steadily. A small fire is easier to manage and extinguish. Never use gasoline, and never squirt lighter fluid onto embers or an open flame. Check local rules before using any chemical firestarter or accelerant.

6. Stay with the fire

Keep an attentive adult at the campfire continuously and supervise children closely. The National Park Service’s instruction is direct: “Never leave a campfire unattended.” If flames or embers spread beyond control, call 911 and give the location; where there is no cell service, notify a ranger or campground host. Olympic National Park reported in a June 17, 2026 release that crews had extinguished several small fires that spread from abandoned campfires in the preceding three weeks—a local, time-bound reminder of why a fire must not be left behind.

7. Drown, stir, and check until cold

When you are finished, drown the fire and coals with plenty of water, stir the ashes and burned material, then add more water. Repeat until no smoke or steam rises and all material is cold to the touch. Turn over larger pieces of wood if needed and check underneath them. Do not rely on the absence of visible flames, and do not simply cover coals with dirt: soil can insulate heat, and some parks prohibit burial.
