Understanding Canada’s Voltage Requirements: A Comprehensive Guide

Canada commonly supplies 120 V at 60 Hz, but homes and equipment can also use 208/240 V and other ratings. Check voltage, frequency, current, plug fit and certification before connecting any device.

Canada’s standard household receptacle supply is generally 120 volts (V) at 60 hertz (Hz). Canadian homes commonly receive 120/240 V service, however, so the voltage at a particular outlet depends on the circuit and equipment. Before plugging in an appliance, check its input label, plug shape, current rating and approval markings.

What voltage and frequency does Canada use?

Health Canada states that electricity distributed to Canadian homes and other buildings is alternating current (AC) with a frequency of 60 Hz. Traveler references commonly describe Canada’s supply as 120 V, 60 Hz for ordinary household outlets.

That description is useful for everyday electronics, but it is not a complete description of every Canadian electrical circuit. Residential service commonly provides both 120 V and 240 V. A standard receptacle may supply 120 V, while equipment such as some ranges, dryers, heat pumps, large compressors and electric-vehicle chargers can require a different circuit and connection.

Voltage is not interchangeable simply because a plug fits. A 240 V appliance must be connected to an appropriately rated circuit by a properly qualified person; it should not be connected to an ordinary 120 V receptacle.

Canadian voltage levels in context

Government equipment specifications demonstrate that Canadian electrical applications extend beyond the household 120 V case. The following values are nominal examples at 60 Hz, not a claim that every voltage is available in every home.

Application or reference Voltage What it means
Common household receptacles 120 V The usual voltage expected at general-purpose outlets.
Household service 120/240 V Service can provide separate 120 V and 240 V circuits for different loads.
Natural Resources Canada EV charging, Level 1 120 V Lower-voltage charging equipment.
Natural Resources Canada EV charging, Level 2 208 or 240 V Requires equipment and a circuit rated for the selected voltage.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada equipment specification 120, 208, 240, 347 or 600 V Examples of nominal equipment voltages specified for Canadian applications.

Why the 60 Hz frequency matters

Canadian supply is 60 Hz AC. Frequency can affect motors, mechanical timers, clocks and some heating or power-conversion equipment. A device designed for 50 Hz should not automatically be assumed to operate correctly at 60 Hz, even if its voltage rating appears compatible.

Read the manufacturer’s frequency specification. If the label does not state that the device supports 60 Hz, ask the manufacturer or a qualified electrical professional before use.

Which plugs and outlets are used in Canada?

Canadian outlets are commonly described as:

  • Type A: two flat, parallel pins.
  • Type B: two flat, parallel pins plus a round grounding pin.

These descriptions identify physical configurations; they do not establish which type is more prevalent. A device with a different plug may need a travel plug adapter to fit the outlet.

Do you need a voltage converter in Canada?

It depends on the device’s input rating, not on the plug alone. Use this sequence before connecting imported equipment:

  1. Read the input label. Look for voltage, frequency and current information. A label such as “100–240 V, 50/60 Hz” indicates broad input compatibility; a label showing only “220–240 V” does not.
  2. Check the frequency. Confirm that the equipment is rated for 60 Hz when used on Canadian supply.
  3. Check physical fit and grounding. If the plug shape differs, a travel adapter may solve the mechanical mismatch. Make sure any grounding contact is preserved where the product requires it.
  4. Check current or wattage capacity. The adapter, converter, transformer and receptacle must be rated for the device’s demand. High-wattage appliances require substantially more capacity than phone chargers.
  5. Choose the correct electrical solution. A plug adapter changes the shape of the connection only. A transformer or converter may be required when the device is not rated for Canadian voltage, and frequency limitations may still remain.
  6. Stop when the rating is unclear. Ask the manufacturer or a qualified electrician rather than guessing.

Health Canada advises international travelers to verify both plug type and destination voltage and warns that an incompatible adapter can cause overheating or device damage.

How to identify products suitable for Canadian use

For electrical products intended to plug into Canadian outlets, look for a Canadian certification mark such as CSA, cUL or cETL. Health Canada advises consumers not to buy or use plug-in electrical products without a certification mark.

A certification mark addresses product evaluation for applicable Canadian requirements; it does not change the product’s voltage, frequency or power rating. You must still match the equipment to the circuit and follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions.

Common situations

Phone, tablet or laptop charger

Many modern chargers list a wide input range, often including 100–240 V and 50/60 Hz. If that range appears on the charger label, you generally need only a suitable plug adapter when the plug does not fit. Verify the charger’s output and current requirements for the device.

Our travel power voltage converter has been chip upgraded with overload protection, overheating protest, overcurrent protection, short current protection, automatic fuse reset and so on. You can buy it with confidence.

Hair dryer, heater or kitchen appliance

These products can draw substantial current. A plug adapter is not a voltage converter, and a small travel converter may not be rated for the appliance’s wattage. Check the input label and the converter’s continuous rating before use.

Imported 220–240 V equipment

Equipment marked only for 220–240 V is not automatically compatible with a 120 V Canadian receptacle. Using a transformer may be impractical for high-power equipment, and a transformer does not correct a frequency mismatch. A Canadian-rated replacement or professional evaluation may be safer.

Electric-vehicle charging

Natural Resources Canada describes Level 1 charging as 120 V and Level 2 charging as 208 or 240 V. Charging equipment, wiring, overcurrent protection and installation must all be rated for the selected arrangement. Do not treat a higher-voltage charger as a normal plug-in appliance.

When construction or rewiring is involved

Installing a 240 V circuit, changing a receptacle, adding EV charging equipment or selecting conductors and protection involves electrical-code and inspection requirements. Rules are administered by provincial or territorial authorities and were not uniform across all jurisdictions in the information summarized here. Use the electrical safety authority for your province or territory and hire a qualified electrician for installation and inspection questions.

Quick compatibility checklist

  • Is the device rated for 120 V, or does it accept a range that includes 120 V?
  • Is it rated for 60 Hz?
  • Does the plug match a Canadian Type A or Type B outlet?
  • If an adapter is needed, does it preserve grounding and carry the required current?
  • If a converter or transformer is needed, is its voltage, frequency and wattage capacity suitable?
  • Does the plug-in product display a Canadian certification mark such as CSA, cUL or cETL?
  • For a 208/240 V installation, has a qualified professional confirmed the circuit and local requirements?

The Bottom Line

Expect 120 V at 60 Hz at ordinary Canadian household outlets, while remembering that Canadian service and equipment also use 208 V, 240 V and other ratings. Match the device’s voltage, frequency, current, plug and certification to the supply; a plug adapter alone changes only physical fit.
