Zone 10 is a temperature category, not a native-plant region. The 20 plants below are examples from the University of Florida IFAS South Florida landscape guide, where they are identified as native and suitable for full sun or conditions that include full sun. They are not a universal list for every Zone 10 garden. Before buying, match a plant to your county or ecoregion, soil, drainage, moisture, and exposure to salt and wind.
For practical planning, “full sun” means 6 or more hours of direct sunlight a day
, according to Native Plant Society of Texas guidance. If your site is outside South Florida, use your local native-plant society or extension service to verify native range and habitat fit.
How to use this list
- Verify geography first. USDA Zone 10 can include very different native floras. These selections are specifically South Florida examples.
- Match the habitat. Several plants below are adapted to beachfront dunes or dry sand; others prefer moist soil or tolerate some shade.
- Keep scientific names with common names. Similar-looking species can have very different status. UF/IFAS lists native inkberry (Scaevola plumieri) but flags Scaevola taccada as invasive.
- Plan for mature dimensions. Heights are mature ranges from the UF/IFAS guide, not the size of a nursery plant.

Choosing among the plants
For beachfront and salt-exposed ground
Start with beach sunflower, beach elder, beach morning glory, railroad vine, sea purslane, inkberry, sea grape, and beach panic grass. The UF/IFAS descriptions specifically identify these plants as suitable for beachfront or sandy coastal settings. Confirm local setbacks, dune-protection rules, and salt exposure before planting.
For dry, sandy beds
Twinflower is specifically noted as doing best in dry sand. Scrub palmetto, saw palmetto, and several dune species also fit sandy settings, but drainage and available rooting space still matter.

For moist areas with a sunny aspect
Fakahatchee grass prefers moist soil while tolerating drought once established. Use that moisture preference when placing it, rather than treating every full-sun plant as interchangeable.
For low groundcovers
Twinflower, Christmas berry, beach morning glory, railroad vine, and sea purslane stay under about 18 inches in the listed mature ranges. Their spreading or prostrate habits make them candidates for edging, dune stabilization areas, or spaces where a tall shrub would block views.

For structure and screening
Cocoplum, snowberry, sea grape, necklace-pod, and the palmettos provide more height or mass. Check the upper end of each mature range and allow room for spread before planting near paths, walls, or utilities.
A practical selection checklist
- Identify your county, ecoregion, and whether the site is inland, coastal, or on a protected dune.
- Measure direct light during the growing season; classify the bed as full sun only when it receives at least six hours daily.
- Test or observe soil texture, drainage, and moisture. Note whether irrigation is reliable or the bed regularly dries out.
- Estimate salt spray and wind exposure, especially within beachfront landscapes.
- Choose the plant’s role—groundcover, grass, perennial, shrub, or tree—before narrowing by flower color.
- Check mature height and spreading behavior against buildings, views, walkways, and maintenance access.
- Buy from a regional native-plant nursery or society sale and confirm the scientific name and documented local provenance.
Where to verify a plant outside South Florida
The Florida Native Plant Society provides filters for county, light, moisture, soil, wildlife value, and other conditions. Outside Florida, use the equivalent native-plant society or cooperative-extension database for your locality. A plant’s presence in a Zone 10 list is not evidence that it is native to your state, county, or ecoregion.
