A maker-built 16-bobbin rope-braiding prototype reported in 2014 used orbiting, thread-wrapped spools and acrylic gears to twine fibers into rope. Its coverage described several possible materials and braiding around a central core, but the machine should be understood as a documented prototype—not a product confirmed to be for sale today.
What is the 16-bobbin rope braiding machine?
Make: reported on August 9, 2014, that David of Mixed Media Engineering had created the machine. Hackaday’s earlier July 29, 2014, coverage says his brother Jed helped build it. The 16 bobbins carry thread or other fibers as the mechanism moves them around one another, braiding the strands into rope.
The contemporary Make: article said a Kickstarter campaign to offer the machine as a kit was planned. That was a statement of intent at the time, not confirmation that the campaign launched or that a kit can now be purchased. The reporting does not establish current retail availability.
How does the braiding mechanism work?
As described by Make:, thread-wrapped spools orbit one another through a system of acrylic gears, twining the fibers together. Hackaday’s report likewise describes groups of bobbins moving in orbit and links to a demonstration of an early version.

Those descriptions explain the broad operating principle, but do not document the full gear geometry, carrier sequence, adjustment settings, tolerances, or construction procedure. They are not enough to reproduce the machine reliably from a written description alone.
What materials can it braid?
Make: names carbon fiber, embroidery thread, and paracord as materials the prototype could use. Paracord is therefore one reported option to try, but the article does not give a diameter range or establish that every type or size will fit.

The coverage also describes braiding around a central core. One example is a surgical tube wrapped in nylon to make pressure tubing. This establishes a reported use case, not a tested compatibility chart or proof of performance for other core materials and dimensions.

The 2014 coverage presents the machine as a way to braid different fibers and, in the described example, to cover a core. It does not provide measurements for rope diameter, output speed, braid strength, production cost, or time saved. It also does not report test conditions or quantified results, so those performance claims cannot be inferred from the material list or mechanism description.

Industrial braiding equipment is a separate category. HERZOG GmbH’s Techtextil 2026 exhibitor listing includes an industrial 16-carrier machine example. That listing concerns industrial equipment, not the maker-built prototype, and does not show that the prototype or a kit is commercially available.
