A plastering machine automates a continuous sequence: it feeds a compatible dry mortar, meters in water, mixes the material, pumps the wet mortar through a hose, and uses compressed air to spray it onto a prepared surface. The applicator then levels and finishes the coat to the render manufacturer’s instructions. The result is faster, more consistent delivery than hand mixing when the machine, pump, hose and material are correctly matched.

Understanding that flow helps you choose equipment, set it up correctly and diagnose problems without treating a published maximum output as a guaranteed job-site production rate.

What a plastering machine actually does

A typical continuous plastering system has six linked stages:

  1. Feed: Dry, machine-compatible mortar enters a hopper or arrives through a compatible silo or delivery system.
  2. Meter water: A water connection, pump and flow controls add water at the mixing zone.
  3. Mix: A mixing tube and shaft blend the dry ingredients and water continuously.
  4. Pump: A mechanical pump moves the wet mortar into the delivery line.
  5. Convey: The mortar travels through a selected hose, commonly a DN25 or DN35 arrangement on the cited equipment.
  6. Spray: Compressed air at the gun projects the mortar onto the substrate, where the applicator builds, levels and finishes the coat.

The machine does not decide the correct formulation. Water quantity, consistency, grain size, working time and finishing method come from the selected mortar’s current technical data sheet and the project specification.

The main components and the job each one performs

Hopper and feed system

The hopper holds bagged dry mix while the machine is operating. Some configurations can accept material from a delivery hood or silo instead of individual bags; silo operation is not universal, so confirm it for the specific model. The feed system must deliver a steady stream of dry material or the water-to-powder ratio will fluctuate.

Water supply, pump and flow meter

Water enters at the mixing section. A water connection, optional water pump and flow meter regulate the addition so the machine can maintain the consistency required by the product. Site pressure and the machine’s approved water arrangement matter: an apparently available tap is not automatically a suitable supply.

Mixing tube and shaft

Inside the mixing tube, a rotating shaft combines dry mortar and water. The tube and shaft geometry varies with the machine and pump arrangement. Continuous mixing means the operator can feed and apply material for an extended run instead of preparing separate batches, provided the product is approved for machine application.

Pump unit

The pump receives the mixed mortar and pushes it into the hose. Rotor-stator assemblies are common, but the exact pump unit differs by model and configuration. Pump selection affects the material types, grain size, pressure and conveying distance the machine can handle.

Mortar hose and outlet

The hose carries wet mortar from the pump to the spray gun. Internal diameter and length create resistance and determine which pump and material combinations are permitted. The cited equipment lists DN25 and DN35 hose arrangements; use the diameter, length and coupling specified for your machine rather than substituting a convenient hose.

Compressor, air line and spray gun

The compressor supplies air separately from the mortar stream. At the spray gun, that air atomizes and projects the wet material onto the wall or ceiling. The gun, nozzle and air setting influence the spray pattern and must suit the material. A machine may list a compressor and spray gun in its basic package, but included equipment varies.

Controls, gauge and cleaning connections

Controls start and stop feeding, water, mixing and pumping functions. A pressure gauge helps the operator observe delivery conditions, while outlets and cleaning connections support flushing and routine maintenance. Exact controls and cleaning provisions differ between packages, so use the operating manual for the installed machine.

How the machine mixes plaster

Use a machine-compatible dry mortar

Manufacturers identify compatible ready-mix dry mortars based on gypsum, lime and cement. Typical applications include gypsum plaster, lime-cement render, insulation materials, fillers and screeds. Compatibility is not interchangeable across every product: maximum grain size, binder, additives, water demand and pump unit all matter.

Set consistency at the machine

Water is introduced while the dry material enters the mixing tube. The operator adjusts the flow to reach the consistency specified for that product. A water setting published for one finishing render must not be copied to another render; use the selected product’s technical sheet and make adjustments only within its instructions.

Prime the hose when required

Long or dry hoses can create excessive resistance at startup. For one cited Knauf finishing-render product, the application sheet instructs: “Prelubricate the hoses with wallpaper paste and fill them successively.” That is a product-specific instruction, not a universal recipe. Check the current sheet for the material you are using, including the approved priming medium and sequence.

Keep the flow continuous

The feed, water, mixing and pump stages are coupled. Interrupting one stage can leave a hose partly filled, change consistency or cause a plug. Plan bag changes, water supply and compressor capacity so the machine can run steadily during a spray pass.

Step-by-step operating sequence

  1. Verify the material and setup. Confirm that the dry mortar is approved for machine application, its grain size fits the pump, and the selected pump, hose diameter and spray gun match the product.
  2. Prepare the site utilities. Check the required electrical supply, water connection, compressor arrangement and hose route. Keep the hose within the model’s permitted length and avoid sharp bends that increase resistance.
  3. Load the dry material. Fill the hopper with bags or connect the approved delivery hood or silo system. Keep foreign objects and hardened lumps out of the feed.
  4. Start water and mixing according to the manual. Establish the specified water flow before normal material production. Watch the flow meter and use the product sheet’s consistency guidance.
  5. Prime and fill the hose. Apply the material-specific priming procedure, then fill the hose progressively so air pockets and dry sections do not remain in the line.
  6. Start pumping and spraying. The pump conveys wet mortar while compressed air at the gun projects it. Hold the gun at a consistent distance and move methodically to build an even coat.
  7. Level and finish. Rule, scrape, sponge or trowel the applied render only as the product instructions and job specification permit. Finishing windows vary with the binder, water content, temperature and substrate.
  8. Stop and clean on schedule. Follow the machine manual and mortar instructions for shutdown, pressure release, flushing and removal of residual material. Do not allow mortar to harden in the mixing tube, pump, hose or gun.

Preparing the surface before spraying

The reviewed application guidance for a cited finishing render calls for a substrate that is stable, dry, even and free of grease, dust and other substances that could weaken adhesion. Primer requirements are substrate-specific: a porous base, dense concrete and an existing coated surface may require different preparation.

That same product guidance says not to apply below +5 °C or above +30 °C during application and while the render hardens sufficiently. Those limits belong to that product, not to every plaster. Check the current technical data sheet for the mortar on your job, and account for the temperature of the air, substrate and material.

Plan the spray pass

  • Protect adjacent surfaces and keep the hose route clear before mixing starts.
  • Mark thicknesses, joints and stopping points so the applicator can maintain a consistent pass.
  • Arrange enough material and labor for a continuous section; an unplanned interruption can leave a visible joint or material in the hose.
  • Confirm that the substrate and primer have reached the condition specified by the render manufacturer.

Published machine specifications and how to read them

The following figures are manufacturer specifications listed by Knauf PFT in 2026. They are equipment maxima for stated configurations, not independent productivity tests or guaranteed output on every mortar.

PFT RITMO L FC-230V plus B 4-2 230 V 14 l/min 40 m for floor fillers; 20 m for plaster or grout

These rows describe different machines and product contexts, so the largest number is not automatically the best choice. Actual throughput depends on the mortar, pump unit, hose diameter and layout, water setting, spray technique and site conditions. The RITMO distance figures also distinguish floor fillers from plaster and grout; do not apply one distance to every material.

How to compare plastering machines

Power and site supply

Confirm whether the site provides the required 230 V or 400 V supply and whether the circuit can support the machine, compressor and water equipment. A higher-output configuration is unusable if the available power does not support it.

Material and grain-size range

Check the manufacturer’s approved mortars, maximum grain size and pump combinations. A machine designed for fine finishing plaster may not accept a coarser render or screed without a different pump and hose arrangement.

Output, hose diameter and reach

Compare the stated litres per minute with the hose diameter and permitted distance. A longer hose or smaller bore can increase resistance, so evaluate the complete configuration rather than output alone.

Feed method and capacity

Bagged hopper loading may suit small or changing jobs; silo feeding can reduce manual handling on sustained work but requires a compatible machine and site logistics. Confirm whether the package includes the delivery hood, hopper accessories or only the basic machine.

Included support equipment

Check whether a compressor, water booster, spray gun, hoses and couplings are included. Missing support equipment can change the real setup cost and delay commissioning.

Transport, cleaning and service

Compare machine weight, lifting points, hose storage, cleaning access and the availability of local parts and service. A compact machine that is difficult to clean or support can cost more downtime than a heavier unit with straightforward maintenance.

Common operating problems and the checks that narrow them down

Inconsistent spray or changing consistency

  • Check that the hopper feed is continuous and that material is not bridging above the inlet.
  • Observe the water flow meter and compare the setting with the mortar’s technical sheet.
  • Confirm that the pump, rotor-stator arrangement and hose diameter are approved for that material.

Low flow or a blocked hose

  • Stop the operation using the machine’s prescribed procedure before investigating the line.
  • Look for excessive hose length, tight bends, an unsuitable bore or mortar beginning to set in the line.
  • Follow the manual’s pressure-release and cleaning steps; do not improvise by opening a pressurized coupling.

Spray pattern is uneven

  • Check the air supply, gun, nozzle and material consistency as a complete system.
  • Keep the gun distance and travel speed consistent across the pass.
  • Inspect for partial obstruction at the nozzle or gun and clean it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Frequent stoppages

Separate utility problems from material problems. Verify electrical supply, water availability and compressor operation first; then check feed continuity, pump selection and hose routing. Record the material batch, water setting and configuration so a recurring fault can be identified rather than repeatedly reset.

Cleaning, safety and limits of the available guidance

Wet mortar can harden inside the mixing tube, pump, hose and gun, so cleaning must be planned before the material’s working time expires. Use only the cleaning sequence, tools and flushing method specified for the machine and mortar. The product page lists a general safety-instructions document for mixing and conveying pumps, but detailed lockout, pressure-release, personal-protective-equipment and electrical procedures are not reproduced here.

For every job, follow the current machine operating manual, the mortar’s safety information and applicable local requirements. Treat the hose and gun as potentially pressurized until the prescribed shutdown and release procedure is complete. Never substitute a material, hose, pump or electrical arrangement merely because its dimensions appear similar.

Practical takeaway

A plastering machine is a coordinated material-handling and spraying system, not simply a powered hopper. Reliable results come from matching the mortar to the pump, setting water to the product specification, priming and routing the hose correctly, maintaining a steady air and material flow, and preparing the substrate within the render’s limits. Use published output and distance figures to check suitability, then qualify them against the actual material, configuration and site.
