A clean outer layer can usually go a few months between washes. Wash sooner after sweat, spills, visible soil, or heavy use, and always follow the blanket’s care label.
Choose a washing schedule based on how you use the blanket

These intervals are household rules of thumb, not a single established standard. Exposure matters more than the blanket’s name: a throw used nightly against skin needs more frequent washing than a decorative blanket that rarely gets used.
If dust-mite allergy is a concern
For allergy control, weekly laundering of bedding, including blankets, is the more specific recommendation. The guidance differs on water temperature, so follow the blanket’s care label and do not treat one temperature as an uncontested requirement.
Mayo Clinic: hot-water recommendation
Mayo Clinic recommends washing sheets, blankets, pillowcases, and bedcovers weekly in water at least 130°F (54.4°C) to kill dust mites and remove allergens. If bedding cannot be washed hot, its guidance suggests putting it in a dryer for at least 15 minutes above 130°F (54.4°C), then washing and drying it. It also notes that freezing an item for 24 hours can kill mites but does not remove allergens. These are allergy-control recommendations; do not use a method the blanket’s label prohibits. AAAAI: weekly washing without a required high temperature
The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) recommends weekly bedding washing to reduce mite numbers and allergen levels, while saying high temperature is not necessary. Washing removes most, but not all, mites and allergens. Its practice parameter cautions against raising household hot-water temperature because of scald risk. Mayo Clinic also recommends allergen-proof covers for mattresses and pillows as an additional allergy measure. Those covers complement, rather than replace, washing blankets. Mayo Clinic allergy-control guidance

Check the care label before washing or drying
The care label determines whether a blanket can be machine washed, what cycle and water temperature to use, and whether it can go in a dryer. Materials and construction vary; wool and some knits may require hand washing or professional care. Whirlpool describes gentle cycles and cold water as typical for fleece, wool, sherpa, knit, crochet, and faux-fur blankets, but the item’s own instructions take precedence. A washer’s bedding cycle does not override the manufacturer’s care instructions. Samsung Canada’s guidance for comforters, duvets, and pillows suggests washing those items two to three times per year with warm water and mild detergent; that product-family advice is not a universal schedule for blankets. The CDC’s hot-water laundry specifications address healthcare facilities, not household blanket care. For home washing, follow the blanket manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations rather than applying institutional laundry settings. CDC laundry guidance
