Best Washers for Blankets, Comforters, and Bulky Bedding

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best washing machine for blankets is not simply the biggest one on the sales floor. For most U.S. homeowners, the right choice is a high-efficiency front-load washer with at least 4.5 cubic feet of capacity, a true bulky or bedding cycle, extra rinse, variable spin speed, good vibration control, and enough space around the machine for the hoses, door swing, drain, and service access.

If you wash king comforters, guest-room bedding, fleece throws, washable quilts, or dog blankets often, aim for 5.0 to 5.5 cubic feet if the room and budget allow. A 4.5 cubic foot washer can work for many queen and king comforters, but a 5.2 or 5.4 cubic foot drum gives the blanket more room to roll, rinse, and spin without packing tight against the glass or lid.

On our job sites, the appliance is only half the decision. We also look at the floor framing, pan or leak protection, shutoff access, drain height, electrical protection, door clearance, dryer size, and whether the homeowner can safely move a wet blanket from washer to dryer. A good washer in a bad laundry setup still causes shaking, leaks, poor drying, and service headaches.

What Makes a Washer Good for Blankets?

Blankets are difficult laundry because they behave differently wet than dry. A dry comforter may feel light, but once saturated it becomes heavy, uneven, and slow to rinse. Fleece and sherpa trap suds. Down needs gentle movement and thorough drying. Weighted blankets may exceed the washer manual’s load limits even when they physically fit in the drum.

For blanket washing, we rank machines by usable drum space, fabric motion, rinse performance, balance control, and serviceability. Smart features, Wi-Fi alerts, and specialty app cycles are secondary. They are useful only after the core mechanical needs are handled.

Capacity: 4.5 Cubic Feet Minimum, 5.0+ Preferred

For most households, 4.5 cubic feet is the practical minimum for bulky bedding. That size can handle many queen blankets and some king comforters when the fabric label allows machine washing. For regular king bedding, guest-room turnover, large families, and vacation rentals, 5.0 to 5.5 cubic feet is the better target.

There is a point where the washer gets too large for the room. Many large front-loaders are about 27 to 30 inches wide, 34 to 40 inches tall, and 32 to 34 inches deep before hose clearance. Add roughly 4 to 6 inches behind the machine for hoses and venting near the dryer, plus room for the front door to open fully. In a laundry closet, that can decide whether the machine is practical.

Gentle Motion Matters More Than Visible Water

A front-load washer tumbles bedding through the wash instead of twisting it around a center post. That is usually gentler on blankets, quilts, down comforters, sherpa, and fleece. A top-load impeller washer can also work well when it has a large tub and a good bedding cycle. A traditional agitator top-loader is less ideal for bulky blankets because large items can wrap, stretch, or wash unevenly.

High-efficiency front-load washers also use less water and energy. ENERGY STAR full-size washers use about 14 gallons per load compared with about 20 gallons for a standard washer. Certified front-loaders use about 50% less energy and water than top-load agitator washers and about 25% less than top-load impeller washers. If you wash bedding weekly, that difference adds up.

Cycle Controls to Look For

A blanket-friendly washer should have a bulky or bedding cycle, delicate cycle, extra rinse, automatic load sensing, stainless drum, spin-speed control, and vibration reduction. Steam or allergen cycles are useful for washable bedding, especially in homes with pets or sensitive skin, but they do not replace the care label.

The control that homeowners underestimate is spin speed. High spin removes water faster, but it can stress delicate fabrics and create imbalance with one large item. For down, wool blends, faux fur, handmade quilts, and weighted blankets, lower spin is often the safer setting if the label allows washing at all.

Best Washer Types for Blankets

The best washer type depends on the bedding, the laundry room, and the person using it. A young family washing twin and queen bedding has different needs than a short-term rental owner turning over king beds twice a week.

Washer Type Best Use Typical 2026 Cost Blanket Pros Watchouts
Large front-load HE washer, 5.0-5.5 cu. ft. King comforters, frequent bedding, gentle care $900-$1,800+ Gentle tumbling, strong efficiency, good bulky cycles Needs front door clearance and careful leveling
Front-load HE washer, 4.5-4.9 cu. ft. Most household blankets and queen bedding $800-$1,500+ Good balance of size, cost, and efficiency King comforters may be tight
Large impeller top-load washer, 5.0-5.4 cu. ft. Users who prefer top access or cannot bend easily $800-$1,500+ Large opening, no front swing clearance Deep tubs can be hard to unload; rinse varies by model
Agitator top-load washer Work clothes, durable cotton items, budget installs $500-$900 Lower upfront price, simple operation Rougher on large blankets; wrapping and imbalance risk
Premium durable top-loader around 3.2 cu. ft. Durability-focused households with smaller bedding $1,600-$2,000+ Stout build and serviceable design Not ideal for oversized comforters

Our Default Recommendation: Large Front-Load HE

For blanket care, our default recommendation is a 5.0 to 5.5 cubic foot high-efficiency front-loader. Models in this class give bulky bedding room to fold and tumble instead of bunching into a wet ball. They also pair well with laundry rooms where we can build a counter above side-by-side units or stack the washer and dryer in a tight footprint.

A current benchmark is a 5.2 cubic foot front-load washer such as the LG WM8900HBA class, listed by the manufacturer at $1,399. That size is right in the practical zone for king bedding, large fleece blankets, and family laundry. It still requires proper installation: a flat floor, level feet, short hoses in good condition, and room to open the door without hitting trim or cabinets.

When a Top-Load Washer Makes Sense

A large impeller top-loader can be the better choice when front clearance is limited, the user strongly prefers top access, or a front-load door would block a narrow hallway. A 5.3 to 5.4 cubic foot top-load impeller model can handle many bulky loads, provided the bedding cycle uses enough water movement and the machine balances well.

There are two tradeoffs. First, deep tubs can be difficult to unload, especially when a wet blanket is plastered against the side. Second, visible water does not automatically mean better washing. Too much detergent, poor rollover, or a packed tub can still leave residue in fleece and microfiber.

When Durability Beats Size

Some homeowners ask about premium, heavy-duty top-load machines because they want a washer that lasts. That can be a reasonable priority for towels, work clothes, and everyday laundry. But for oversized bedding, check the actual tub capacity. A durable 3.2 cubic foot washer, such as the Speed Queen TR7 class listed at $1,649 MSRP, is not the same tool as a 5.2 cubic foot bedding machine. It may be well built, but it is not the first choice for a king comforter.

Blanket Materials Change the Answer

The washer has to match the blanket. Before any machine cycle, read the care label and the washer manual. If those two documents disagree, follow the more conservative limit.

Cotton and Polyester Blankets

Cotton and polyester are usually the easiest. Use bulky, bedding, or normal depending on the label, warm or cold water as directed, and a measured amount of HE detergent. For a large blanket, use extra rinse. Overloading causes detergent residue, stiff fabric, and long drying times.

Fleece, Sherpa, and Microfiber

Fleece and sherpa hold lint, pet hair, and detergent. Wash them with cold or warm water, gentle or bulky cycle, low to medium spin, and extra rinse. Avoid too much detergent. In an HE washer, more soap does not mean cleaner bedding; it often means trapped residue and odor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Down Comforters

Down needs space, low agitation, thorough rinsing, and careful drying. A 5.0+ cubic foot front-loader is usually a better fit than a smaller washer. Use a mild detergent if the label permits washing. Dry on low heat or air as directed, pause the dryer several times, and redistribute the comforter so the center does not stay damp.

Wool Blankets and Handmade Quilts

Many wool blankets and heirloom quilts should not go into a standard machine. If the label allows washing, use cold water, delicate movement, low spin, and air drying. For handmade quilts, older stitching, unstable dyes, or sentimental value, professional cleaning is usually the safer cost than replacing a damaged item.

Weighted Blankets

Weighted blankets are the load that gets homeowners in trouble. A 20-pound dry blanket can weigh much more when saturated. Many home washers are not designed for that kind of wet load, even if the blanket physically fits. Check the blanket label and the washer manual’s weight limit. If the weight is close to the limit, use a commercial machine or professional cleaner.

Electric Blankets

Electric blankets require label-specific handling. Do not wash an electric blanket with damaged wiring, cracked controls, exposed conductors, or a questionable connector. If the label permits machine washing, use the specified cycle and dry exactly as directed. High heat can damage internal wiring.

Washer Features Worth Paying For

For a blanket-focused washer, spend money on capacity, motion, rinse, spin control, and vibration control before paying for cosmetic finishes. A black steel finish may look sharp in a remodeled laundry room, but it will not save a down comforter from poor rinsing.

Worth It

A bulky or bedding cycle is worth having because it changes the wash pattern for large items. Extra rinse is worth using because blankets trap detergent. Variable spin is worth paying for because delicate bedding and heavy loads need different handling. A stainless drum is standard on many better machines and resists chips that could snag fabric.

Automatic load sensing helps, but it should not be treated as permission to overload. The washer still needs open space in the drum. A good rule is that a blanket should fit loosely, with room to move. If you have to force the door shut, the load is too large.

Nice, But Secondary

Steam, allergen cycles, app alerts, and automatic detergent dispensers can be useful. Steam may help with washable bedding refresh cycles. App alerts help if your laundry room is on another floor. Auto-dispensing can prevent detergent overuse if calibrated correctly. None of these fix an undersized drum or weak floor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Usually Not the Deciding Factor

Do not buy a washer for blankets based on the number of cycles alone. A machine with 24 cycles and a cramped drum is still a poor bedding washer. Also be cautious with ultra-fast cycles. They are convenient for shirts and towels, but bulky blankets need time to wet out, rinse, and spin evenly.

Installation: The Part Appliance Lists Miss

As builders, we pay close attention to the laundry area because a blanket washer puts more stress on the room than a basic machine. Large wet loads create vibration, water risk, and access problems. The washer may be excellent, but if the laundry closet is too tight or the floor flexes, the homeowner still gets noise, movement, and leaks.

Clearances and Access

Measure the installed space, not the empty opening. Include baseboards, closet trim, door casing, rear hose clearance, dryer vent path, and door or lid opening. For many front-loaders, plan for about 30 inches of width, 34 inches of depth, and at least 4 inches behind the unit. If the washer door opens into a hallway or closet door, confirm the swing before delivery.

Leave enough room to reach the shutoff valves without pulling the machine out. We prefer a recessed washer box with hot and cold valves, a drain standpipe, and clear access above or beside the unit. If a hose bursts, the homeowner should be able to shut water off in seconds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Floor Strength and Vibration

Blanket loads expose weak floors. A second-floor laundry room with flexible framing may shake even with a good washer. The machine must be level, all feet must bear firmly, and the floor should be flat and stiff. In remodels, we look for framing direction, subfloor condition, water damage, and whether reinforcement is needed before installing large machines.

Vibration is not only annoying. It can loosen hoses, damage flooring, walk the machine out of position, and make spin cycles fail. If a washer shakes only with blankets, the problem may be loading. If it shakes with every load, look at leveling, floor stiffness, shipping bolts, worn suspension, or an installation defect.

Water Protection

For upper-floor laundry rooms, we like a drain pan, leak detection, and durable waterproof flooring. A pan is not a cure-all unless it drains somewhere useful, but it can buy time. Shutoff valves should be accessible, and braided stainless hoses should be inspected regularly. Replace old hoses before they become the cheapest part of an expensive ceiling repair.

Electrical and Code Notes

Laundry areas commonly require GFCI protection, and many modern installations also involve AFCI requirements depending on the circuit, location, and adopted code in the jurisdiction. Do not assume an older outlet is acceptable just because the old washer worked. If you are adding or moving laundry connections, expect the electrical work to be inspected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Permits vary by city, but washer and dryer installation permits often fall around $50 to $500 when plumbing, electrical, venting, framing, or gas work is involved. A simple appliance swap on existing compliant hookups may not need the same process, but adding a laundry closet, moving a drain, installing a 240-volt dryer circuit, or changing gas piping is different work.

Washer and Laundry Room Costs in 2026

For budgeting, separate the washer price from the room cost. Homeowners often budget $1,200 for the machine and then discover the laundry closet needs valves, a drain correction, an outlet update, flooring repair, or a dryer vent change.

Item Typical 2026 U.S. Cost What Drives the Price
Budget top-load washer $500-$900 Basic controls, smaller capacity, agitator or simple impeller design
Large HE top-loader $800-$1,500+ 5.0+ cu. ft. tubs, bedding cycles, better controls
Large front-load washer $900-$1,800+ 5.0+ cu. ft. capacity, vibration control, steam or smart features
Premium durable or smart washer $1,600-$2,000+ Build quality, brand platform, controls, finish, warranty structure
Basic washer/dryer install with existing hookups About $350-$750 typical; simple hookups may start near $50 Delivery, leveling, hose connection, haul-away, local labor
New washer plumbing/drain only About $500-$1,000 Distance to water lines and drain stack, wall access, patching
Full washer/dryer hookup setup About $1,000-$2,500 Plumbing, electrical, gas or 240V dryer circuit, vent route
Laundry room remodel Commonly $6,000-$17,000; many full rooms land around $11,000+ Cabinets, flooring, counters, utility sink, waterproofing, layout changes

Cost rises quickly when utilities are far away. A laundry room backed up to existing plumbing is one job. A new second-floor laundry room over finished space is another. Upper-floor work may require floor reinforcement, pan drainage, waterproof flooring, wall opening and patching, sound control, and a carefully planned vent route.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro

A homeowner can often handle a basic washer replacement if the existing hookups are modern, accessible, and in good condition. That means the valves shut off fully, the outlet is properly placed, the drain standpipe is sound, the floor is level, and the new machine fits through every doorway and stair turn.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reasonable DIY Tasks

DIY is reasonable for measuring the space, comparing washer dimensions, reading fabric labels, choosing proper cycles, cleaning the washer filter, running a tub-clean cycle, and replacing supply hoses when the valves are accessible and functional. Many homeowners can also install a leak detector on the floor behind or beside the washer.

If you connect a new washer yourself, use new hoses, avoid cross-threading, do not overtighten, check for leaks under pressure, and run a test cycle while you are home. Confirm the drain hose is secured at the proper height and cannot pop out during discharge.

Hire a Pro For These Situations

Hire a licensed plumber, electrician, or contractor when adding hookups, moving a laundry room, changing drain lines, adding a 240-volt circuit, changing gas dryer piping, opening walls, reinforcing floors, installing a pan drain, or working on an upper floor. Also bring in help if the washer shakes badly after proper leveling and balanced loading.

For remodels, we specify the appliance dimensions early. The rough-in should match the washer and dryer pair, not a generic laundry idea. We want the valves reachable, the pan planned, the dryer vent short and serviceable, the floor durable, and enough folding space for bulky bedding. A 24-inch deep counter over side-by-side front-loaders can make blanket handling much easier if the machine heights and clearances work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to Wash Blankets Without Damaging Them

Start with the label. Then check the washer manual. Use the largest practical machine, choose the gentlest cycle that still cleans the item, and use less detergent than instinct suggests. HE detergent is concentrated, and blankets trap residue.

Load the blanket loosely. Do not pack it down. If the washer allows, use bulky or bedding cycle with extra rinse. For delicate fabrics, use low spin. For washable cotton or polyester bedding, medium or high spin may be acceptable if the machine remains balanced and the label allows it.

If the washer becomes unbalanced, pause and redistribute the blanket. Some loads need a second item for balance, but do not add random heavy pieces that overload the machine. If the blanket is too heavy wet, stop and use a commercial washer next time.

Drying is just as important. A washer that can clean a king comforter should be paired with a dryer large enough to tumble it. If the dryer is too small, the outside dries while the center stays damp. Use low heat or air dry when required. Pause during drying, open the blanket, and reposition it. Down and thick comforters may need several hours to dry fully.

Common Mistakes We See in Homes

The most common mistake is buying by cubic feet alone. Capacity matters, but it does not replace fabric care, rinse performance, spin control, and the washer’s rated load limits. A second mistake is washing one huge blanket that absorbs unevenly and sends the machine into a violent spin. Large items need space, proper cycle selection, and sometimes careful balancing.

Too much detergent is another frequent issue. In an HE washer, excess soap leaves blankets stiff, attracts dirt, and can cause odor in both the blanket and machine. Use the detergent cap markings, not a full cap by habit.

Homeowners also forget the dryer. A blanket that washes well still needs room to tumble. If you upgrade to a large washer but keep an undersized dryer, bedding day will still be slow and frustrating.

Finally, do not ignore the room. If shutoffs are buried behind the appliance, the floor bounces, the pan has no useful drain, or the outlet is outdated, the laundry setup is not ready for regular bulky bedding. The right washer should be part of a working laundry system.

Bottom Line

For most households, the best washing machine for blankets is a 5.0 to 5.5 cubic foot high-efficiency front-loader with bulky bedding, delicate, extra rinse, variable spin, and strong vibration control. A 4.5 cubic foot front-loader is a workable minimum for many homes. A large impeller top-loader is a good alternative when top access or room layout matters more than front-load efficiency.

Before buying, measure the installed space, confirm the hookups, check the floor, compare dryer capacity, and read the blanket labels you actually own. The best appliance choice is the one that can clean your bedding gently, rinse it fully, spin it safely, and fit the laundry room without creating new construction problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size washing machine do I need for a king-size comforter?

Use 4.5 cubic feet as the practical minimum, but 5.0 to 5.5 cubic feet is better for king comforters. The extra drum space helps the comforter tumble, rinse, and spin without bunching.

Is a front-load or top-load washer better for blankets?

A front-load washer is usually better because it tumbles blankets instead of twisting them around an agitator. A large impeller top-loader can work well if you prefer top access or have limited front clearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I wash a weighted blanket in a home washer?

Only if the blanket label and washer manual both allow it. Weighted blankets can become extremely heavy when wet, and many home machines are not built for that load.

How much does it cost to add washer and dryer hookups in 2026?

New washer plumbing and drain work often runs about $500 to $1,000. A full washer/dryer hookup setup commonly runs about $1,000 to $2,500, with higher costs for long utility runs, second-floor locations, gas work, or new electrical circuits.

Do laundry room outlets need GFCI protection?

Laundry areas commonly require GFCI protection, and some installations may also require AFCI protection depending on the adopted local code and circuit. If you are adding or moving laundry connections, plan on electrical inspection.

Why does my washer shake when washing blankets?

Blankets absorb water unevenly and can create an unbalanced spin load. Shaking can also come from an overloaded drum, poor leveling, flexible flooring, shipping bolts left in place, worn suspension, or a washer that is too small for the blanket.
