Water thoroughly, let the excess drain, and empty the saucer. The mix should stay somewhat moist without becoming waterlogged or drying out completely.
Use the potting mix, not the calendar
Check the mix near the surface. Colorado State University Extension and University of Illinois Extension both recommend watering holiday cacti when the top inch of soil has dried (Colorado State Extension; Illinois Extension). That is a cue to check, not a promise that your plant needs water on a particular day.
There is no dependable universal interval in this guidance. How quickly the mix dries depends on the potting medium, container, indoor conditions, and season. Check the soil rather than assuming it needs water every week.
How to water it
- Check the top inch. When it has dried, water the plant.
- Wet the mix thoroughly. Let excess water run out through the drainage holes.
- Empty the saucer or cachepot. Do not leave the pot sitting in collected water.
If the mix stays wet for an extended time, check that the pot drains freely and that the medium is not too dense. North Carolina State Extension describes Easter cactus as an epiphytic houseplant and recommends moist, well-drained cactus mix (North Carolina State Extension). Choose a mix that retains some moisture but drains freely; the cited sources do not endorse a particular brand.

- Easter cactus, also known as holiday cactus, is a tropical cactus known for its prolific star-shaped blooms of various colors that tend to bloom in the spring
- Easter cactus grows well as a houseplant, in which case it prefers dappled, filtered light and requires loose, well-draining soil
- Mature Size: 6-12 in. tall, 1-2 ft. wide
- Flower Color: Red, pink, orange, purple, white
Keep the mix moist, not soggy or bone dry
The top surface can dry somewhat between waterings, but do not let the whole mix become bone dry. Maryland Extension advises keeping the potting mixture moist without letting the pot sit in water. Its answer, written by Maryland Certified Professional Horticulturist Mary and dated February 13, 2019, puts the practical balance this way: “Except just after flowering when they need a little rest, water well as often as necessary to keep the potting mixture moist but don’t let the pot sit in water.” (Ask Extension)
Reduce watering during rest periods
Ease back on watering during winter dormancy, as North Carolina State Extension advises. Maryland Extension also recommends reduced watering during the short rest just after flowering. Do not keep following the same watering routine through these rest periods as during active growth.
Rank #2
- USDA Zones 10 to 11
- Blooming Season: Spring
- Soil and water: Prefers well-draining soil. Moderate watering
- Light: Bright indirect light
- Thrives in temperatures between 60 degrees Fahrenheit to 75 degrees Fahrenheit
Make sure the advice fits an Easter cactus
Easter cactus is an epiphytic plant, not a desert cactus, so care advice for desert species is not a good substitute. North Carolina State Extension lists Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri and historical names including Hatiora gaertneri and Schlumbergera gaertneri; it describes flat, segmented stems and star-shaped flowers. Easter cactus can be confused with Thanksgiving and Christmas cacti. Illinois Extension notes that Easter cactus has rounded teeth along the stem edges and brownish hairs at the stem tips (Illinois Extension).
