Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport’s East Terminal Expansion is being built in stages from west to east, extending outward from the existing terminal. The sequence is intended to keep the airport operating, limit disruption to passengers and staff, and make it possible to open completed sections incrementally. As of the October 2026 project report, construction was still underway; reported opening dates and completion figures remain targets and estimates.

How does an airport stay open during a major terminal expansion?

At Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) in Belgrade, Montana, the East Terminal Expansion Project (ETEP) is organized around the existing terminal. Crews began by removing portions of the building where the new expansion would connect, then moved through excavation for concrete foundations, structural steel, siding and roofing. The work has advanced west to east, allowing construction to proceed in sections instead of treating the terminal as a single area to be rebuilt all at once.

The Gallatin Airport Authority, which owns and operates BZN, began the project in fall 2024. Bozeman-based Martel Construction is general contractor and construction manager. Morrison-Maierle developed the designs, with RS&H and Hennebery Eddy Architects Inc. serving as project architects.

Gallatin Airport Authority CEO Brian Sprenger described the operating goal this way: “One of the key focuses of this project has been phasing the construction so that we can make progress while continuing to serve our passengers well, with minimal disruptions to our daily operations at the airport.” The project account says the approach was intended to preserve airport operations while construction continued, not that every part of the work was disruption-free.

What does phased construction look like at BZN?

Heavy demolition began in early 2025. The first reported phase lasted 20 months and included the new terminal’s structural frame, roof and deck. The next phase focused on exterior siding and interior finishes. In the October 2026 report, some areas were receiving structural steel while other areas were being painted and prepared for ceilings and carpet. Martel Senior Project Manager Travis Kabalin said, “That work is still ongoing,” describing the active construction.

Building work was coordinated with apron, runway-area and exterior paving work. Kabalin said the project team chose a systematic west-to-east sequence to avoid returning to completed areas later for paving and creating further disruption: “So, we decided to move systematically from west to east just to keep us from having to double back into finished spaces to deal with disruptions from paving operations later.” That is the project team’s rationale for this site and sequence, rather than a universal rule for airport construction.

What will the expansion add?

The planned scope combines passenger facilities, concessions and airport offices. It includes an enhanced concourse, expanded baggage claim, a second security checkpoint, additional gates and restrooms, and third-floor administrative offices. The concession plan described in the project report includes two additional restaurants, three bars, a stop-and-go market and three retail stands.

The expansion is also intended to give BZN more room to accommodate flights and larger aircraft. Some gates removed during construction had been sized only for smaller aircraft, according to the report. The expected increase in capacity is a projection, not a measured result after the new spaces open.

How will the new terminal connect to BZN’s existing design?

The exterior palette pairs metal and composite panels with an exterior insulation and finish system that has a stucco-like appearance. Inside, locally sourced gray-brown granite from Gallatin County is among the finishes. Stone fireplaces, wood-covered beams and a large third-floor observation window overlooking the Gallatin Valley contribute to the ski-lodge atmosphere described for the expanded terminal.

What were the reported schedule and size estimates?

The figures below are estimates and targets attributed to airport leadership in the October 2026 project report, not confirmed outcomes. Sprenger estimated overall project completion at about 50% to 55% in mid-August 2026. In October, the then-current estimate for full completion was spring 2029, replacing an initial 2030 target. Martel’s Kabalin also said, “We’re now looking at probably spring of 2029 for full project completion.”

Measure Reported figure What it describes
Overall completion About 50% to 55% Sprenger’s mid-August 2026 estimate of project progress.
Full completion Spring 2029 The schedule estimate reported in October 2026; a forecast, not a verified completion date.
Airport footprint About 200,000 square feet added Expected growth from about 300,000 to around 500,000 square feet, according to Sprenger.
Traveler capacity About 40% increase Sprenger’s expected capacity increase, not a post-opening measurement.

The airport also hoped to open the expanded baggage claim before the winter peak travel season, with new arrival and departure gates planned ahead of the 2027 summer travel season. These were reported targets, not confirmed openings.
