Landscape architecture education in the United States is evaluated through accreditation by the Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board (LAAB). LAAB sets standards for first professional degree programs, reviews evidence such as self-studies, curriculum maps and student work, and monitors accredited programs through interim and annual reports. Its 2026 standards revision is still a proposal, not a new set of adopted requirements. The public-comment period announced by LAAB closed on October 15, 2026, and the board said it would consider comments before finalizing any changes.

The proposed review focuses on four issues that affect how programs prepare students for practice: removing redundancy in the September 2024 standards, adding clearer expectations for artificial-intelligence (AI) literacy, creating outcome-based faculty-sufficiency standards that can fit different program structures, and reconsidering Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and Cultural Competence provisions through broader stakeholder consultation.

What does LAAB accreditation mean?

LAAB is the official accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) for first professional landscape architecture programs. It develops standards and judges whether a degree program complies with them. Its stated mission, quoted from the 2024 Accreditation Procedures, is to “evaluate, advance, and advocate for the quality of professional landscape architecture education.”

LAAB’s jurisdiction is specific. It covers first professional programs leading to a bachelor’s or master’s degree in landscape architecture in the United States and its territories. The board’s ambition to connect academia and practice worldwide does not extend that accreditation authority to programs outside that jurisdiction.

Program type Within LAAB’s stated accreditation scope? What that means for a reader
First professional bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture Yes, in the United States and its territories Can seek and maintain LAAB accreditation.
First professional master’s degree in landscape architecture Yes, in the United States and its territories Can seek and maintain LAAB accreditation.
Pre-professional landscape architecture degree No Its curriculum is not evaluated under LAAB’s first-professional accreditation scope.
Advanced professional degree No It falls outside the scope described by LAAB, even if the institution offers an accredited first professional program.
Programs outside the United States and its territories Not under LAAB’s stated jurisdiction Students must consult the relevant accreditor in that country or region.

The board includes practitioners and academicians, representatives of collateral organizations, and public representatives. The collateral organizations listed by LAAB are the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA), and the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (CLARB). This mixed membership is intended to keep evaluation connected to both educational practice and professional expectations.

How is landscape architecture education evaluated?

Accreditation is an evidence-based review rather than a ranking of schools. A program demonstrates how it meets each standard, reviewers examine the evidence, and LAAB determines whether the program is in compliance. The process uses several connected documents and checkpoints.

  1. Standards and procedures set the benchmark. LAAB publishes the standards and procedures that programs must address. Its 2024 procedures took effect immediately, and the updated standards apply to programs with visits scheduled in fall 2025 or later.
  2. The program conducts a self-study. Faculty and administrators describe the curriculum, governance, resources, faculty, students and outcomes, then provide evidence showing how the program meets each applicable standard.
  3. Curriculum mapping connects courses to outcomes. A curriculum map shows where students encounter, practice and demonstrate required knowledge and abilities. Reviewers can use it to identify gaps, unnecessary repetition or outcomes that are assessed only once.
  4. Student work makes learning visible. Portfolios, studio projects, technical work and other assignments help reviewers judge what students can actually do, rather than relying only on course descriptions.
  5. Reviewers examine the program and report findings. A visiting team evaluates the submitted material and the program’s operations. Programs may need to provide an interim report addressing specified concerns between comprehensive reviews.
  6. Annual reports keep the accreditation current. Accredited programs report on students, graduates, budgets and faculty each year. LAAB uses those reports to monitor changes, check continuing compliance and track education trends.
Evidence or checkpoint Question it helps answer
Self-evaluation report How does the program meet each standard, and what documentation supports the claim?
Curriculum map Where are outcomes taught, reinforced and assessed across the degree?
Student-work materials What level of design, technical, analytical and professional performance do students demonstrate?
Interim report Has the program addressed conditions or concerns identified in an earlier review?
Annual report What has changed in enrollment, graduates, finances or faculty since the last review?

LAAB says it reviews its standards at least every five years to determine whether they still evaluate program quality and meet students’ education and training needs. That recurring cycle allows the standards to respond to changes in professional practice without treating every revision as an immediate mandate.

How are landscape architecture accreditation standards changing?

LAAB’s current revision effort began with feedback from an initial revision call, discussions at the Program Chair Round Table during the 2025 ASLA Conference, a stakeholder survey, four online town halls, specialized consultation sessions and continuing community input. The final survey organized questions around seven core standards and asked respondents to identify provisions needing clarification, deeper consideration or substantive revision.

LAAB invited educators, practitioners, students and community members to comment. The announced deadline was October 15, 2026; that date has passed. The material available for this article describes proposed priorities, not final requirements. Programs should check LAAB’s current announcements before changing a curriculum or preparing a compliance submission.

Reducing redundancy in the 2024 standards

Redundant language can make a program spend time documenting the same activity in several places, while still leaving reviewers unsure which evidence matters most. A rewrite could consolidate overlapping expectations, clarify definitions and make the relationship between standards easier to follow. The educational goal would not be less rigor; it would be a cleaner route from a standard to the outcome and evidence that demonstrate compliance.

Adding AI literacy to the curriculum conversation

Generative AI and other computational tools affect research, visualization, site analysis, writing, documentation and professional judgment. LAAB has identified AI literacy as a revision priority, but no final list of required tools or assignments has been adopted. A durable standard is more likely to emphasize what graduates understand and can evaluate than to require a particular software product.

Developing outcome-based faculty-sufficiency standards

Programs differ in size, mission, delivery format and use of full-time, part-time, adjunct, visiting and practicing faculty. LAAB is considering standards that judge whether the available faculty collectively produce the required educational outcomes, while remaining adaptable to those different structures. The open issue is how to make the evidence clear and comparable without imposing one staffing model on every institution.

Reviewing DEI and Cultural Competence through consultation

The proposed review treats DEI and Cultural Competence as areas for deliberate stakeholder consultation. That approach recognizes that terminology, community relationships and professional expectations can change, and that standards should be teachable and assessable rather than merely aspirational. The consultation process does not establish a final wording or a new compliance test by itself.

What should landscape architecture programs teach about AI?

Until LAAB publishes adopted language, programs should treat AI literacy as a curriculum-design question rather than a compliance checklist. A defensible approach addresses four capabilities:

  • Use: Students can select appropriate AI-assisted methods for tasks such as precedent research, visualization or data organization and can explain the limits of the method.
  • Verification: Students check generated facts, code, images, measurements and citations against reliable sources and field evidence.
  • Professional judgment: Students understand that responsibility for a design decision remains with the practitioner, not with a model or software interface.
  • Ethics and disclosure: Students can discuss privacy, bias, authorship, intellectual property, accessibility and when AI assistance should be disclosed.

Assessment should require visible reasoning. For example, a studio brief might ask students to submit an AI-use log, identify an erroneous or biased output, and revise the proposal using site data and human critique. A technical course could compare an AI-generated workflow with a manually checked workflow and grade the verification process. These examples are instructional options, not published LAAB mandates.

How can faculty-sufficiency standards remain flexible and credible?

An outcome-based model starts with what students must learn and then asks whether the faculty team has the expertise, time and continuity to teach and assess it. Evidence could include faculty qualifications, teaching assignments, advising loads, professional currency, assessment responsibilities, access to specialists and the program’s plan for covering absences or turnover.

Flexibility matters because a small rural program, a large research university and a practice-oriented professional school may organize instruction differently. Comparable expectations can still be maintained if each program demonstrates that students receive sustained access to qualified educators, coherent advising and assessment across the curriculum. The risk is vagueness: if “sufficient” is not tied to observable outcomes and documented capacity, programs and reviewers may reach inconsistent conclusions. Clear definitions, workload evidence and examples of acceptable structures would make the proposed approach more reliable.

What would a stronger DEI and Cultural Competence standard look like?

Students need more than a statement of values. They need opportunities to understand how landscape decisions affect communities, whose knowledge is represented, how engagement is designed and how power, access and historical context shape a site. Programs can make those outcomes assessable through community-engaged projects, reflective writing, precedent analysis, inclusive engagement plans and evaluation criteria that consider listening, accountability and responsiveness.

Consultation is important because communities, students, practitioners and educators may identify different omissions or unintended burdens in a standard. A useful requirement should state the learning outcome, allow multiple pedagogical approaches and identify evidence reviewers can inspect. It should not prescribe a single community-engagement script for every place or project.

How should a program prepare for an accreditation review?

Programs can prepare without waiting for the 2026 proposal to become final. The following sequence aligns existing LAAB resources with practical internal review.

  1. Build a standards crosswalk. List every current 2024 standard, the responsible person, the supporting evidence and the location of that evidence. Mark duplicate requests and unresolved interpretations for discussion.
  2. Map outcomes across the curriculum. Identify where each outcome is introduced, reinforced and assessed. Check that the level of student work claimed in the self-study is visible in actual assignments and portfolios.
  3. Audit faculty capacity. Compare course offerings, enrollment, advising and assessment workloads with faculty expertise and availability. Document how the program handles specialized subjects, professional practice and continuity during staffing changes.
  4. Review AI practices. Record where students already use or encounter AI, set disclosure and verification expectations, and train instructors to evaluate process as well as final output.
  5. Examine DEI and Cultural Competence evidence. Look for explicit learning outcomes, inclusive teaching practices, community relationships and assessment criteria. Replace broad claims with examples of student work and documented program decisions.
  6. Maintain an evidence repository. Keep approved curriculum maps, representative student work, faculty records, annual-report data and action plans in a versioned system so the self-study does not depend on a last-minute collection effort.
  7. Monitor LAAB decisions. Because the 2026 language remains unsettled in the available material, assign someone to track the board’s final action and any revised procedures before the next visit.

What accreditation tells students and applicants

Accreditation indicates that a first professional program has been evaluated against LAAB’s standards and is subject to continuing reporting. It does not rank accredited schools, guarantee a particular teaching style or establish that every elective, facility or graduate outcome is identical across institutions.

Applicants should confirm the current status of a specific program with LAAB and the institution, because accreditation actions and program listings can change. Useful questions for a program chair include:

  • Which degree is the first professional degree and what is its normal completion path?
  • How does the curriculum connect studio, ecology, technical documentation, practice management and professional ethics?
  • How are students taught to evaluate AI-assisted work and disclose its use?
  • What opportunities exist for community-engaged learning and Cultural Competence?
  • How stable is the faculty team, and how are advising and specialized instruction covered?
  • What evidence from recent reviews or annual reporting has led to curriculum improvements?

Why the revision matters beyond campus

Accreditation standards influence what programs document, what faculty teams prioritize and what evidence students produce. Clearer standards can reduce administrative duplication and make review findings easier to act on. Well-designed AI, faculty and Cultural Competence provisions can also help programs respond to changes in practice without locking them into one technology, staffing pattern or teaching method.

The most important distinction is status. LAAB’s 2026 priorities describe an active policy conversation; they do not yet define final obligations. Programs, students and practitioners should use the existing 2024 standards for current planning, follow LAAB’s final action for any adopted revisions, and judge proposed language by whether it measures educational outcomes, permits responsible flexibility, provides evidence-based faculty expectations and produces learning that can be taught and assessed.
