Specify a platform goods lift when a recurring operation moves goods between fixed levels, the goods can be loaded onto a platform with the site’s handling equipment, and no unauthorised person needs to ride with the load. The rated load must include the goods and the pallet truck, trolley, lift truck or other equipment used during loading. Confirm the platform size, landing arrangement, number of stops, travel, loading frequency, guarding, power and structural conditions with a qualified lift designer before selecting equipment.
The first decision is rider policy. A goods-only platform lift, goods-passenger lift, freight elevator, service lift and automated vertical conveyor are different equipment classes. Calling something a “platform lift” does not establish that it is suitable for goods; accessibility platform lifts are designed for people with mobility impairments and follow a different safety framework.

Start with the movement you need to control
A platform goods lift is a vertical lifting installation with a load-carrying platform. It is suited to buildings where goods repeatedly move between known levels—such as a warehouse mezzanine, production floor, stockroom or service area—and where operators can load and unload at designated landings.
Unlike a passenger elevator, a goods-only arrangement normally restricts riders. Operators may load or unload the platform, but the equipment’s design, controls, guarding and local rules determine whether anyone may remain on it during travel. That distinction affects the equipment category, the applicable code, the landing protection and the operating procedure.

Define the rider policy before discussing models
- Goods only: no person travels with the load; access is controlled at landings and during movement.
- Goods and passenger: an operator or other person must travel with the goods, so passenger-lift requirements and accessibility obligations may apply.
- Unattended or automated transfer: goods move through a conveyor or automated lifter integrated with material-handling equipment.
Write the policy in the project brief. “Occasional operator access” is not the same as “people may ride.” If the actual workflow requires a person to accompany the load, specify equipment intended for that use rather than treating a goods-only lift as a passenger elevator.
Calculate the complete moving load
Capacity is the total mass the lift carries at the moment of movement, not just the product. Include pallets, cages, bins, roll containers and the handling device used to place or remove them.

Use a worst-case load calculation
- Record the heaviest goods unit that will be moved.
- Add the pallet, stillage, container or other load carrier.
- Add the pallet truck, trolley, manual pallet truck, automatic pallet truck or mechanical lift truck that enters the platform.
- Check the combined weight against the proposed rated load, allowing for the actual loading method and any stated distribution limits.
- Document the centre of gravity and wheel or support positions so the designer can verify platform loading and edge clearances.
For example, a 700 kg pallet, a 35 kg pallet and a 90 kg pallet truck create a 825 kg moving load before any other equipment is counted. Selecting a nominal “800 kg” lift would therefore be inadequate, even though the goods alone weigh less than the rating.
Manufacturer specifications for goods-only equipment expressly require the combined weight of goods and handling means to remain within the requested rating. Treat catalogue capacities as product-specific values, not as a universal industry scale.
Choose the equipment class that matches the workflow
| Option | Use it when | Key checks |
|---|---|---|
| Goods-only platform lift | Goods move between fixed levels on an attended platform, with riders restricted by the equipment design and operating rules. | Combined load, platform dimensions, loading aids, guarding, stops, travel, landing geometry and site works. |
| Goods-passenger lift or passenger elevator used for goods | A person must travel with the goods, or the building requires passenger service. | Passenger capacity, car and door dimensions, accessibility, rider controls and passenger-elevator rules. |
| Service lift or dumbwaiter | Smaller goods move between levels without an operator riding on the load-carrying unit. | Load size, manual loading method, access restrictions and number of stops. |
| Vertical conveyor or automated lifter | Repeated transfers can be integrated into a material-handling line. | Throughput, infeed and outfeed heights, goods format, controls, interlocks and guarding. |
| Freight elevator | Large or frequent freight movement warrants a conventional elevator arrangement. | Rider policy, car and door size, traffic pattern, loading equipment and freight/elevator code. |
These are screening distinctions, not approval decisions. A lift designer and the authority having jurisdiction must classify the proposed installation for its location and use.
Check platform, landing and building geometry
Goods handling fails when the lift is sized only for weight. Measure the complete route from approach to destination and record the largest item, turning radius and equipment envelope.

Dimensions to capture
- Platform width and depth needed for the largest load and the handling device.
- Clear landing-door width and height, including protective posts, gates and sill details.
- Approach aisle width, turning space and the direction from which a pallet truck will enter.
- Vertical travel, every stop and the finished floor levels.
- Headroom, pit or base conditions, shaft or guide arrangement and overhead obstructions.
- Required guarding at edges, gates, barriers and access points.
Do not assume a standard platform will fit a pallet truck simply because the rated load is sufficient. Wheel positions, ramp angles, threshold gaps and load overhang can determine whether the equipment is usable and safe.
Record operating intensity
Give the designer the expected cycles per hour, hours per shift, shifts per day, peak periods and whether loading is attended. A low-frequency stockroom transfer and a continuous production feed may require different drive, cooling, controls and guarding arrangements even when their maximum load is identical.
Understand what the standards do—and do not—cover
Standards have defined scopes. A reference to one lift standard does not prove that it governs every goods-only platform installation.
| Reference | Scope or status | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| ISO 8100-1:2026 | Edition 2 was published in March 2026, with an English correction in May 2026. It covers permanently installed lifts carrying persons or persons and goods, with an enclosed car, specified levels, speed above 0.15 m/s and guide rails no more than 15° from vertical, indoors or weather-protected. | It is a passenger and goods-passenger lift standard. Do not cite it as the governing standard for every goods-only platform lift. |
| ISO 8100-20:2018 | Current 2018 standard, confirmed in 2024, setting global essential safety requirements and risk-reduction methods for lifts carrying persons or persons and goods. | Its abstract alone does not determine the local rules for a particular goods-only installation. |
| ASME A18.1-2023 | Safety standard for inclined and vertical platform lifts intended to transport people with mobility impairments. | “Platform lift” may mean an accessibility device, not a goods-handling lift. Confirm the intended use before applying this standard. |
| BS ISO 4190-2:2001 | Dimensional guidance for Class IV lifts generally used for freight, with distinct loading series including goods-only freight lifts where local safety codes allow them. | Use it as a dimensional reference, not as universal approval for a proposed installation. |
In the United States, the U.S. Access Board states: “Freight elevators cannot be used to satisfy the requirement for an accessible route between floors.” That statement concerns the U.S. accessible-route requirement. It does not mean every jurisdiction treats freight and goods lifts identically, so the local accessibility rules still need confirmation.
Resolve local code and approval questions early
The governing code edition and classification depend on the project country and locality, occupancy, configuration, rider policy and the authority having jurisdiction. Ask the designer and authority to confirm:
- Whether the installation is classified as a goods-only lift, freight elevator, goods-passenger lift, conveyor or another category.
- Which national, regional and local lift, machinery, fire, electrical and workplace-safety rules apply.
- Whether a shaft, enclosure, landing gate, pit, fire separation or emergency release is required.
- Who may operate the equipment and what training, signage, inspection and maintenance records are required.
- Whether the building’s accessible route must be provided by a separate passenger lift or other compliant means.
Obtain a written design basis before ordering. A catalogue reference to a familiar passenger-lift standard is not a substitute for project-specific compliance review.

Specification brief: information a supplier needs
A useful enquiry prevents a generic quotation that cannot be installed. Include the following in one document.
- Use and rider policy: goods only, goods-passenger or automated; who loads, unloads and controls the lift.
- Load data: maximum goods mass, carrier mass, handling-equipment mass, load distribution and any concentrated wheel loads.
- Platform and access: required clear dimensions, landing-door sizes, approach direction, turning space and edge protection.
- Travel: every served level, finished floor-to-floor dimensions, number of stops and expected travel frequency.
- Environment: indoor or weather-protected location, temperature, dust, moisture, washdown, corrosive exposure and impact risk.
- Building constraints: available shaft or guide position, pit or base, headroom, structural support, power supply and installation access.
- Controls and safety: call stations, key access, interlocks, emergency stop, alarms, overload protection, barriers and status indication.
- Operations: cycle rate, shifts, supervision, cleaning, inspection, planned maintenance and fault recovery.
Ask for drawings showing the platform, guides, landings, gates, clearances, loads transferred to the building and all required builder’s work. Have the structural engineer verify supports and openings rather than relying on a typical detail.
Use manufacturer data without overgeneralising it
A 2024–25 catalogue from GMS lists a G-Lift goods-only range from 1 to 4 tonnes. That is the range of that vendor’s stated product line, not an industry benchmark or proof that every configuration is available at every site.
Hidral’s ET-300en V.05 technical document, dated 16 December 2011, illustrates the specification factors that must be checked—capacity, speed, number of stops and standard travel—and describes use with hand, manual pallet, automatic pallet and mechanical lift trucks. Because the document is old, confirm current models, limits, controls and availability directly with the manufacturer before relying on any figure.

Choosing by goods weight alone
Symptom: the lift overloads when a pallet truck enters. Fix: rate goods, carrier and handling equipment together and verify distribution.
Assuming “platform lift” means goods lift
Symptom: a product intended for mobility-impaired passengers is proposed for pallets. Fix: state the goods-handling use and rider policy in the enquiry and request the applicable classification and code basis.

Ignoring the approach route
Symptom: the platform fits the load but the trolley cannot turn or cross the landing threshold. Fix: draw the complete approach, turning envelope, sill and door clearances before selection.
Using a freight lift for accessibility
Symptom: the goods lift is counted as the building’s accessible route. Fix: provide a compliant passenger route where required; in U.S. guidance, freight elevators do not satisfy that route requirement.
Quoting a model-specific figure as a universal rule
Symptom: an old or vendor-specific capacity, speed or travel is copied into a new project. Fix: label the source and date, then obtain current project-specific data and approval.
When a platform goods lift is the right answer
Proceed toward a goods-only platform lift when the operation has fixed levels, repeatable goods movements, suitable loading space, no requirement for riders during travel, and a building that can accept the guides, landings, guarding and power arrangement. Choose a goods-passenger or passenger elevator when people must accompany the goods. Choose a service lift, dumbwaiter or automated conveyor when the load, access method or production flow fits those alternatives better.
