Honeywell Advance Control for Buildings is a commercial building-controls platform launched in January 2024. Honeywell positions it as a way to automate building management, apply machine learning, strengthen cybersecurity, and modernize network performance while reusing existing wiring. Those capabilities could support an energy-efficiency program, but neither Honeywell’s launch material nor the April 22, 2024 Buildings.com sponsored feature reports independently measured energy savings, emissions reductions, installation savings, or cybersecurity performance.

For an owner, facilities manager, or controls specifier, the practical question is not whether the platform promises sustainability. It is whether the specific controller family, wiring, software architecture, cybersecurity design, integrator, and measurement plan fit the building. The steps below show how to evaluate that fit before committing to equipment.

What Honeywell Advance Control for Buildings is

Advance Control is presented as a platform rather than one universal controller. Honeywell’s product information associates it with three product families: Honeywell Optimizer Suite, Trend IQ5 controllers, and Honeywell ComfortPoint Open. Each has a different role and application range, so the name “Advance Control” should not be treated as proof that every device is interchangeable or suitable for every project.

Honeywell describes the platform as a foundation for a building’s energy-efficiency strategy. Its stated capabilities include automated building-management functions, machine-learning features, built-in cybersecurity, and faster network speeds that can use existing wiring. These are vendor descriptions of intended capabilities. The available material does not establish a measured result for a particular building, climate, controls sequence, or controller model.

The feature published by Buildings.com on April 22, 2024 is a sponsored product feature, and Honeywell’s announcement dates the platform launch to January 2024. That context matters: benefits such as improved efficiency, easier modernization, and better occupant experience should be evaluated as Honeywell’s aims or claims, not as independently validated outcomes.

What the platform is intended to do

Automate routine building operations

Automation can move recurring control decisions from manual intervention into programmed sequences. In a commercial building, that may include scheduling equipment, coordinating air-handling units, responding to sensor inputs, and managing central-plant or rooftop-unit operation. The exact sequences depend on the selected controller, application software, points list, and commissioning work; the platform name alone does not define them.

Honeywell says automation can give building managers more control over efficiency and help address shortages of technicians needed for upkeep and modernization. That can be useful where a small facilities team is responsible for many sites, but staffing benefits depend on alarm quality, documentation, remote access, training, and the ability of an integrator to maintain the system.

Use machine learning as part of controls

Honeywell describes machine learning as part of Advance Control and names NXP Semiconductors as a strategic technology collaborator for machine-learning and security work. The public material does not specify which algorithms, data volumes, control loops, training process, or controller models are involved. Ask for those details during design review rather than assuming that every product in the associated families provides the same machine-learning functions.

Modernize communications over existing wiring

The platform is marketed as supporting faster network speeds using existing wiring. Reuse can reduce disruption in a retrofit, especially where conduits are difficult to access, but “existing wiring” is not a universal compatibility guarantee. Cable type, topology, shielding, termination, distance, electrical noise, installed devices, and the proposed protocol all affect whether reuse is possible.

Build cybersecurity into the controls platform

Honeywell identifies built-in cybersecurity as a platform feature. That phrase does not replace a project-specific threat model. A secure installation still needs an inventory of controllers and gateways, network segmentation, identity and access rules, patch ownership, remote-support procedures, backup and recovery tests, logging, and a plan for devices that cannot be updated. Request the security architecture and lifecycle commitments for the exact model and software release being proposed.

Offering Honeywell’s stated role Questions to resolve before specification
Honeywell Optimizer Suite A range of controllers for commercial buildings. Which controller and I/O combination matches the equipment, points count, sequence complexity, and local code requirements?
Trend IQ5 controllers Versatile control for building energy-management systems. How will the proposed IQ5 model integrate with existing supervisory software, field buses, sensors, and third-party equipment?
Honeywell ComfortPoint Open A programmable BACnet building controller for air-handling units, rooftop units, and central-plant applications. Which BACnet objects, networks, programming tools, licensing, and commissioning responsibilities apply to the selected configuration?

Do not infer that a controller listed under one family can substitute for another. Confirm exact model numbers, firmware, I/O capacity, communications interfaces, programming environment, supported protocols, regional availability, and end-of-life policy with Honeywell or a qualified commercial-controls integrator.

How to evaluate an Advance Control project

  1. Document the building and its goals. Record floor area, occupancy schedules, HVAC and plant equipment, utility meters, comfort complaints, maintenance constraints, and planned renovations. Define whether the priority is lower peak demand, reduced runtime, better fault detection, improved comfort, easier remote management, or a combination.
  2. Inventory the existing controls. List controllers, supervisory stations, gateways, sensors, actuators, protocols, firmware versions, panel locations, and available drawings. Identify equipment that is proprietary, unsupported, or already scheduled for replacement.
  3. Survey the wiring and network. Trace cable routes and terminations, test continuity and signal quality, and document network topology. Ask the integrator to state exactly which existing cables can be reused, which devices require new runs, and what performance is expected under the proposed design.
  4. Map points and sequences. Create a point list for every air-handling unit, rooftop unit, plant component, meter, and alarm. Write the intended operating sequences, setpoint limits, schedules, safeties, and manual overrides before selecting a controller. This exposes I/O and programming requirements early.
  5. Select the product family and model. Compare Optimizer Suite, Trend IQ5, and ComfortPoint Open against the documented points, BACnet or other protocol needs, local service capability, panel space, environmental ratings, and future expansion. Require a written compatibility statement for third-party equipment.
  6. Approve the cybersecurity design. Define network zones, firewall rules, user roles, multifactor access where applicable, remote-support approval, update windows, backup frequency, incident contacts, and retention of logs. Make these requirements part of the contract, not an informal promise.
  7. Plan a staged installation. For occupied buildings, sequence work by floor, air-handling system, or plant loop. Require temporary operating procedures, rollback steps, trend logging, and after-hours cutover plans so a failed change does not leave occupants without safe environmental control.
  8. Commission and measure. Test every point, alarm, interlock, schedule, fail-safe, and override. Trend energy meters and operating variables long enough to compare like-for-like weather and occupancy periods. Establish the baseline and calculation method before claiming savings.

Can Advance Control improve energy efficiency?

It may support an energy-management strategy by automating schedules, coordinating equipment, exposing operating data, and enabling tighter control sequences. Honeywell’s executive statement describes automation as a way to give managers more control over efficiency, occupant experience, and energy-management goals. That statement expresses intended benefit; it is not a measured performance result.

The reviewed product pages and launch announcement do not provide an independent energy-savings percentage, emissions reduction, utility-cost result, occupant-experience score, or verified installation-cost reduction for Advance Control. They also do not provide a product-specific network-speed measurement or an independent cybersecurity test. A project should therefore set its own baseline and acceptance criteria instead of borrowing an unverified headline number.

A practical measurement plan

  • Capture at least one representative baseline period for electricity, gas, chilled water, or other relevant utilities.
  • Normalize comparisons for weather, occupancy, production schedules, holidays, and major equipment outages.
  • Track runtime, valve and damper positions, supply-air temperatures, static pressure, plant temperatures, alarms, and override hours alongside meter data.
  • Separate control-sequence effects from capital upgrades, tariff changes, weather anomalies, and changes in operating hours.
  • Have the owner, engineer, and integrator agree in writing on the reporting period, calculation method, and acceptance threshold.

Can you upgrade controls without replacing existing wiring?

Honeywell presents existing-wiring reuse as a platform capability intended to support faster network speeds and modernization. Whether it works in a particular building must be established by a site survey. A cable may be physically present yet unsuitable because of its category, length, shielding, topology, termination quality, or interference. Legacy devices may also use protocols or power arrangements that the new controller does not support.

Ask for a wiring test report and a drawing that identifies every retained cable, new cable, splice, gateway, and termination. Require the proposal to state what happens if a retained segment fails testing: replacement scope, cost responsibility, schedule impact, and temporary operation. Reusing wiring can reduce demolition, but it should not be used to hide unresolved compatibility risks.

Cybersecurity and integration questions to put in the specification

“Built-in cybersecurity” is a starting point for requirements, not a complete security program. Include questions such as:

  • Which controller, firmware, supervisory software, and gateway versions are proposed?
  • How are devices authenticated, and how are administrator, operator, contractor, and read-only privileges separated?
  • Can the controls network be isolated from corporate IT and operational technology networks with documented firewall rules?
  • How are patches delivered, tested, approved, and rolled back?
  • What remote-access method is used, who authorizes sessions, and what events are logged?
  • How are configurations, programs, graphics, certificates, and historical data backed up and restored?
  • What notification and support process applies if a vulnerability affects the installed version?

Have the integrator demonstrate a failed-controller recovery, loss-of-communications response, sensor-failure alarm, and manual override procedure before handover.

Where the platform fits in Honeywell’s broader portfolio

Honeywell’s building-automation overview lists Remote Building Manager separately from Advance Control. Remote Building Manager is described as cloud-based supervisory software for managing buildings remotely; Advance Control is the controller-platform offering discussed here. They may appear in the same modernization conversation, but they are not the same product and should not be treated as interchangeable layers.

Honeywell also names Analog Devices as a strategic technology collaborator, describing its work in digital connectivity and signal conversion. NXP and Analog Devices are cited as technology collaborators, not as components that a building owner must purchase separately. Confirm the bill of materials and support responsibilities with the controls provider.

Cost, availability, and procurement checks

The material available for Advance Control does not establish a current price, a specific controller model for a particular building, country-by-country availability, an Amazon listing, or a standard installation cost. Pricing will depend on controllers, I/O, panels, gateways, software, engineering, wiring, commissioning, training, and local labor.

Before issuing a purchase order, request a bill of materials, licensing schedule, required tools, warranty terms, spare-parts strategy, cybersecurity support period, and clearly defined exclusions. Honeywell’s product page directs prospective customers to contact a commercial building expert about their needs. Use that channel or an authorized commercial-controls specialist to verify the current offering and regional support.

What a defensible sustainability claim looks like

Describe Advance Control as an enabling platform for automation and energy management unless your own project data supports a stronger statement. A defensible case study would identify the building, baseline period, weather and occupancy normalization, installed equipment, control changes, measurement method, and post-installation results. Without those details, phrases such as “reduces emissions” or “cuts energy use” overstate what the published material demonstrates.

For a construction or renovation team, the best deliverable is a controls package that connects sustainability goals to sequences, meters, commissioning tests, and ongoing accountability. The platform can be considered within that package; it should not be treated as the sustainability outcome by itself.
