AviProtek® E is a bird-safe insulating-glass system that combines Walker Glass acid-etched visual markers with Vitro Architectural Glass Solarban® solar-control low-e coatings. Vitro specifies the bird-deterrent pattern on the IGU’s first, exterior surface and the low-e coating on the second, interior surface. That arrangement is the central design idea: the pattern remains visible to birds while the low-e coating can occupy the surface position used for solar and thermal control. The system is intended for professional specification through Vitro’s Certified Network, not ordinary retail purchase.
What AviProtek E is and why the surface positions matter
AviProtek E was developed by Vitro Architectural Glass and Walker Glass as a commercial bird-safe glazing option. Walker supplies acid-etched visual patterns; Vitro combines those patterns with Solarban solar-control low-e glass. The result is an insulating glass unit (IGU) designed to address two façade requirements at once: making glazing more visible to birds and controlling heat and solar gain.

In Vitro’s stated configuration, the visual marker is applied to the first surface of the IGU, the outside face exposed to the air. The Solarban low-e coating is on the second surface, the interior face of the outer lite. An IGU’s surfaces are numbered from the exterior inward, so surface one is outside glass and surface two is the cavity-facing side of that same lite. Confirm the final surface schedule on the project’s approved shop drawings; other assemblies, coatings or performance requirements may require a different arrangement.
Surface placement is more than a labeling detail. A pattern on the exterior can provide a visual cue before a bird reaches the glass, while a low-e coating on surface two remains in a conventional position for many solar-control IGU designs. Vitro’s trade article presents this as an advantage over some first-surface ceramic-frit arrangements, but the comparison is a manufacturer claim rather than an independent head-to-head test result.

How the bird-deterrent pattern is intended to work
Visual markers interrupt a transparent flight path
Birds may not perceive a clear façade as a physical barrier. Repeated marks on the glazing create a visual signal that can make the pane easier to detect. AviProtek E is available with horizontal, vertical or decorative marker layouts, allowing the architect to coordinate bird-safety intent with the façade’s visual language.
The Building Design + Construction article by Vitro Architectural Glass describes a 2-inch-by-4-inch rule as a common evaluation idea for spacing visual markers. That description is context, not a universal code, a complete standard or a guarantee that collisions will be prevented. Spacing, contrast, reflectivity, viewing angles, surrounding vegetation, interior lighting and adjacent façade geometry all affect the real risk. A project team should document the criterion it is using and verify it against the applicable jurisdiction, owner requirements and current bird-safe design guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsExterior placement should be coordinated with the façade environment
Because the pattern is on the first surface, it is exposed to weather, washing and construction activity. The design team should identify the marker orientation and coverage on elevations, coordinate it with mullions and spandrels, and make sure replacement lites will preserve the same visual rhythm. Reflections of sky, trees or planted terraces can remain collision hazards even when a marker pattern is present, so bird-safety review should consider the whole façade rather than a single glass sample.
Published AviProtek E configurations
The following values are the manufacturer’s published product information. They are not a substitute for current technical data or a fabricator’s confirmation for a particular make-up.
| Design or supply item | Published AviProtek E information | Specification implication |
|---|---|---|
| Bird-safe marker styles | Horizontal, vertical or decorative acid-etched patterns | Select a pattern that satisfies the project’s bird-safety criterion and architectural intent; confirm the actual repeat and coverage in current drawings or samples. |
| Glass substrates | Clear glass or Starphire Ultra-Clear glass | Substrate choice affects color neutrality and appearance. Review full-size samples where color, reflectance and pattern contrast are important. |
| Low-e options | Solarban 60 or Solarban 70 on the second, interior surface of the IGU | Use current performance data for the selected coating, thickness, cavity and lite combination; do not infer energy values from the product name alone. |
| Listed glass thickness | 6 mm | Verify whether the listed thickness applies to the intended lite and whether structural, safety, acoustic or wind-load requirements call for a different assembly. |
| Listed sheet size | 96 × 130 inches | Check fabrication yield, edge deletion, tempering or lamination needs, transportation limits and the fabricator’s maximum processing size. |
| Supply route | Exclusively through Vitro’s Certified Network | Engage a certified fabricator early to confirm availability, processing capability, lead time and project-specific documentation. |
A practical specification workflow
1. Define the collision-risk objective
Start with the façade conditions that make bird strikes more likely: transparent corners, glass railings, vegetated areas, sky-reflecting elevations, connecting façades and illuminated interiors. Record the owner’s sustainability goals and the project’s chosen bird-safe criterion. Do not describe the product as universally collision-proof; the sources provide no independent reduction percentage or numeric performance guarantee.

2. Choose the visual language and substrate
Request samples of the horizontal, vertical and decorative options on both clear and Starphire Ultra-Clear substrates. Evaluate the pattern from expected approach distances, in changing daylight and against the actual interior background. A small sample can understate or exaggerate visibility, so use a scale and viewing condition that are meaningful for the elevation.

Solarban 60 and Solarban 70 are listed options, but the appropriate choice depends on orientation, window-to-wall ratio, climate, shading, daylight goals and the complete IGU build-up. Obtain current center-of-glass and whole-window values from the fabricator or Vitro documentation. Energy modeling should use the exact coating, cavity, lite thickness, spacer, frame and edge conditions proposed for the project.
4. Draw the surface schedule explicitly
Identify the AviProtek marker on surface one and the Solarban coating on surface two in the glazing schedule, elevations and details. Include the pattern direction, module or repeat, edge conditions, orientation changes and any areas where markers are intentionally omitted. This prevents a visually similar but incorrectly assembled lite from being substituted during fabrication.
5. Coordinate fabrication and installation
Before issuing the final specification, ask a Certified Network fabricator to confirm maximum sizes, processing sequence, tempering or heat-treatment requirements, edgework, insulating-glass assembly, quality checks and replacement strategy. Coordinate the pattern with gaskets, setting blocks, spandrel transitions, doors and operable vents. Require submittal samples that show both the exterior marker and the interior low-e appearance.
6. Verify documentation and approvals
Keep the current product data, approved samples, environmental documents, shop drawings and glazing schedule in the project record. Confirm that the delivered lite matches the approved substrate, coating, marker orientation, thickness and dimensions. If the project relies on a sustainability credit, have the rating-system professional verify the applicable version and submission evidence before making a credit commitment.

AviProtek E compared with first-surface ceramic frit
Vitro’s 2021 article contrasts acid-etched markers with ceramic frit by focusing on where the bird-safe treatment and low-e coating sit within the IGU. The comparison below separates the physical arrangement from claims that still require project-specific evidence.
| Comparison axis | AviProtek E as described by Vitro | Potential ceramic-frit arrangement | What the project team must verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bird-deterrent treatment | Acid-etched visual pattern by Walker Glass | Ceramic-frit pattern, with geometry and spacing determined by the selected system | Pattern visibility, repeat, contrast, durability and compliance with the project’s chosen bird-safe criterion. |
| Surface arrangement | Pattern on surface one; Solarban low-e on surface two | First-surface frit may lead to a low-e coating on surface three in some IGU designs | Confirm the actual surface map, optical appearance and coating compatibility for the proposed make-up. |
| Energy performance | Manufacturer positions the acid-etched arrangement as compatible with efficient low-e placement | Moving a low-e coating to another surface may affect optical or thermal behavior | Use current tested or calculated values for the complete assembly. The supplied sources provide no numeric product-to-product comparison. |
| Appearance | Available on clear or Starphire Ultra-Clear glass with horizontal, vertical or decorative patterns | Appearance varies with frit color, density, pattern and glass substrate | Approve samples at project scale and under representative lighting and reflection conditions. |
The acid-etched-versus-frit argument should therefore be treated as a design hypothesis to validate, not as proof that one treatment always delivers better energy performance. A façade consultant or energy modeler should compare the actual assemblies, and a bird-safe specialist should review the actual pattern and site context.
Environmental documents and sustainability claims
Vitro’s product page and its 2021 trade article state that an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and a Health Product Declaration (HPD) are available for AviProtek E. The article associates the EPD with LEED Pilot Credit 55 and says the HPD can contribute to Materials and Resources points. These are manufacturer-reported documentation and potential credit pathways, not a promise that every project will earn a point.
Credit eligibility depends on the rating-system version, product scope, declared unit, supply-chain boundaries, project specifications and the documentation accepted by the reviewing body. Obtain the current EPD and HPD, check their validity dates and scope, and have the project’s sustainability professional map them to the exact submission requirements. Do not copy a historical credit reference into a current specification without checking whether the pilot credit or its successor still applies.
California legislation and other code questions
The 2021 Vitro article says AviProtek E met California legislation requirement AB262 enacted in 2020. That is a dated vendor statement, not a current legal conclusion. Regulations, agency interpretations and adopted code editions can change, and requirements may differ by project type and jurisdiction. The architect, code consultant and authority having jurisdiction should confirm the currently applicable rule and the evidence needed for approval.

Separately, verify safety glazing, wind-load, thermal, acoustic, fire and accessibility requirements for the complete IGU and framing system. Bird-safe intent does not replace those obligations, and a pattern that satisfies a bird-collision criterion does not by itself establish compliance with any building code.
How to source the glass
AviProtek E is a large-format architectural glazing product. Vitro identifies the Certified Network as its exclusive supply route and provides links from the product page to samples, technical data, environmental information and fabricator or project support. The practical path is to contact a certified fabricator or Vitro architectural representative with the project’s location, approximate quantities, lite sizes, pattern choice, substrate, low-e option and required delivery date.
- Ask whether the fabricator currently processes the selected pattern, substrate and 6 mm glass at the required size.
- Confirm whether the 96 × 130 inch listed sheet size is available for the project region and whether yield or edge clearances reduce the usable area.
- Request current lead times, minimum quantities, sample formats, replacement-lites policy and packaging or transport limitations.
- Require written confirmation of surface positions, coating identification, pattern orientation and insulating-glass construction.
- Coordinate procurement with the façade schedule; a substitution made for availability can change appearance, energy values or bird-safety performance.
What the available evidence does and does not establish
The product page says collisions claim “millions of birds each year,” but it does not provide a named study, methodology or attributable statistic. That phrase should not be presented as a quantified scientific finding. The reviewed sources also contain no independent test result showing a specific percentage reduction in collisions for AviProtek E, no numeric energy comparison with ceramic frit and no named individual quotation.
Those limits do not make the product unusable; they define the decisions that remain with the project team. Use the manufacturer’s configuration and documentation as the starting point, then obtain current technical values, review the site-specific collision risk, model the complete façade and document the selected criterion. Where performance is critical, consider a project mock-up or other evaluation agreed by the architect, façade consultant, owner and relevant reviewers.
Quality-control checks before installation
- Compare delivered labels and shop drawings with the approved Solarban option, substrate, thickness and IGU make-up.
- Inspect the exterior pattern for correct orientation, continuity, damage and unintended omissions at edges or transitions.
- Confirm that the low-e coating is on the specified second surface and that the marker is on the specified first surface.
- Review color, reflectance and pattern appearance from exterior and interior viewpoints before accepting a large shipment.
- Record lot information, inspection results and approved samples so replacement glass can be matched later.
- Obtain the fabricator’s cleaning, handling and maintenance instructions; the exterior acid-etched surface should not be treated as interchangeable with an unpatterned lite.
AviProtek E is best understood as a coordinated façade system rather than a decal or generic window film. Its value is the combination of an exterior acid-etched bird-safe pattern with an interior-surface Solarban low-e coating, offered in defined substrates and pattern families through a professional supply network. The correct specification still depends on current documentation, complete-assembly performance and the site’s actual collision risk.
