Short answer: Google’s full Gemini camera features are not generally included with a Nest Cam at no extra cost. They require Google Home Premium Advanced, which Google lists at $20 per month or $200 per year in the U.S. The camera is an additional purchase, although basic live viewing, detection and limited event previews can work without a subscription.
What “Nest Cam with Gemini” actually means
Google uses several layers of intelligence across its camera and smart-home products, and they are not interchangeable:

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Basic Nest Cam detection: compatible cameras can identify people, animals and vehicles, with features such as activity zones.
- Standard-plan intelligence: Google Home Premium Standard adds longer event history and intelligent alerts, including supported event types such as packages, sounds and familiar faces.
- Gemini camera features: Advanced adds AI-generated event descriptions, richer notifications, natural-language video-history search and daily camera summaries.
- Gemini for Home voice assistant: this is a separate smart-speaker and smart-display experience. It should not be confused with Gemini’s analysis of camera footage.
Google lists the Gemini camera package separately from Gemini for Home and Ask Home in its feature table.
What Gemini adds to Nest Cam alerts
A conventional notification might simply say “Person detected.” A Gemini-generated description can provide more context about the event, such as a person carrying an object or performing a particular activity. Google calls these descriptive notifications and event descriptions.
#1 Best Overall
- Meet the smarter, sharper wired Google Nest Cam Indoor; with 2K HDR video and Gemini, it knows what to look out for and what to do next[1,2,3](Gemini features require a Google Home premium subscription; try it for 1 month at no cost to you)[4]
- With an Advanced subscription to Google Home Premium, know more about what’s happening with notifications like “Kids are playing soccer in the living room”[3]; and get even more detailed descriptions and tap to see a summary of what happened[3]
- Google Nest Cam Indoor keeps your data safe with encrypted video, two-step verification, and enhanced security through your Google Account; and a green LED light lets you know when it’s processing or streaming video
- Video is crisp and clear in 2K HDR, Nest Cam’s highest resolution yet[1,2]; see rich color and details, and see in the dark with night vision; and with a wider, taller field of view, you can see even more of a long hallway or large room[1]
- Search your video history with help from Gemini[3]; try something like “What happened to the vase in the living room?” to see a summary and relevant clips (subscription required)
That extra context can reduce the number of alerts you need to open. It is especially useful when you are checking cameras remotely or reviewing several events after being away.
However, an AI description is an interpretation, not a forensic finding. It can be incomplete or wrong because of lighting, camera angle, obstructions or an ambiguous scene. Do not treat it as guaranteed identification, intent or proof of what happened. Familiar-face alerts also have regional restrictions; Google says they are unavailable for Nest Cams and Doorbells used in Illinois.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Searching camera history with natural language
With Advanced, Google says you can ask the Google Home app questions about what happened in your Nest Cam or Doorbell history. Gemini interprets the available events, finds a relevant match when possible and returns a description with an associated clip.
This is not unlimited access to every frame ever recorded. Search depends on the footage that exists, the camera’s recording mode, the plan’s retention window, connectivity and whether the event was detected and classified. A search that returns nothing does not prove that nothing happened.
There are two materially different kinds of history:
- Event-based history: detected events and their associated clips.
- 24/7 history: continuous recording on compatible wired cameras and wired doorbells.
Google lists up to 60 days of event-based history and up to 10 days of continuous history with Advanced.

What Home Brief summaries do
Advanced also includes Gemini-generated daily summaries of recorded camera activity, sometimes described as Home Brief. Instead of opening every individual notification, you can review a concise recap of events recorded while you were away.

- Nest Cam has built-in intelligence and can tell the difference between a person, animal, and vehicle and send alerts directly through the Google Home app[1], no subscription required.Operating Temperature : –4°F to 104°F (–20°C to 40°C)
- Easily check in from anywhere 24/7 with 1080p HDR video[1] with night vision, and see what you missed with 3 hours of free event video history[2]; add a Nest Aware subscription (sold separately) for up to 60 days of video history[3]
- If your Wi-Fi goes down or there’s a power outage, Nest Cam will store up to an hour of recorded events so you can see what you missed[4]
- Put Nest Cam anywhere, outside or in; it’s battery powered, so you don’t need to set it up near an outlet, and the magnetic mount makes installation effortless
- For continuous power and 24/7 video recording with Nest Aware Plus, add a weatherproof power cable or indoor stand with power cable (both sold separately)
A summary is not a complete account of every moment. It inherits the limitations of the underlying system: the camera must be online, the footage must be retained, the event must be detected and the AI interpretation must be accurate enough to describe it.
What works without a subscription
A Nest Cam does not become unusable when you decline Google Home Premium. The exact free features vary by model and country, but Google’s current pages for the wired third-generation indoor camera and wired second-generation outdoor camera list:
| Feature | Without Premium |
|---|---|
| Live video | Yes |
| Person, animal and vehicle detection | Yes, on compatible models |
| Activity zones | Yes, on compatible models |
| Event previews | Six hours, with clips up to 10 seconds on the newer wired models |
| Gemini event descriptions and richer notifications | No |
| Natural-language camera-history search | No |
| Daily Gemini camera summaries | No |
| 24/7 history | No |
The newer wired cameras also offer 2K HDR video and a 152-degree diagonal field of view. Check the product page for your specific camera rather than assuming every Nest Cam generation has the same free feature set.
Google Home Premium Standard vs. Advanced
Google’s U.S. Store currently lists the following prices. They are U.S. prices shown by Google; subscription pricing and promotions can change.
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | Camera-related features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $10 | $100 | 30 days of event-based history and intelligent alerts; not the full Gemini camera package |
| Advanced | $20 | $200 | 60 days of event history, up to 10 days of 24/7 history, descriptive notifications, event descriptions, searchable history and daily summaries |
Annual billing saves $20 per year on Standard and $40 per year on Advanced compared with paying monthly for 12 months. Google presents Home Premium as a whole-home subscription, so you do not normally buy a separate Premium plan for each camera.
Google’s current FAQ says existing second-generation Nest Aware subscribers were moved to Standard, while Nest Aware Plus subscribers moved to Advanced without a billing change.
What Nest Cam ownership costs
Using Google’s regular listed U.S. hardware prices checked in August 2026, the basic calculations look like this:
Rank #3
- Nest Cam has built-in intelligence and can tell the difference between a person, animal, and vehicle and send alerts directly through the Google Home app[1], no subscription required.Controller Type:Google Assistant.Connectivity protocol:Bluetooth;Wi-Fi.Power source type:Battery Powered.Operating Temperature : –4°F to 104°F (–20°C to 40°C).
- Easily check in from anywhere 24/7 with 1080p HDR video[1] with night vision, and see what you missed with 3 hours of free event video history[2]; add a Nest Aware subscription (sold separately) for up to 60 days of video history[3]
- If your Wi-Fi goes down or there’s a power outage, Nest Cam will store up to an hour of recorded events so you can see what you missed[4]. Nest Cam Outdoor comes with a wall plate that can be mounted on your brick wall.
| Setup | First-year cost before tax |
|---|---|
| Indoor wired camera, $99.99, plus Advanced paid monthly | $339.99 ($99.99 + $240) |
| Indoor wired camera, $99.99, plus Advanced paid annually | $299.99 ($99.99 + $200) |
| Outdoor wired camera, $149.99, plus Advanced paid annually | $349.99 ($149.99 + $200) |
| Indoor wired camera, $99.99, plus Standard paid annually | $199.99 ($99.99 + $100) |
These figures exclude sales tax, installation, financing and temporary discounts. Google has displayed a temporary $69.99 price for the wired indoor camera, but that should not be treated as its permanent price. Google also advertises one month of Home Premium with certain new cameras, including the newer wired indoor and outdoor models. Eligibility, payment details and automatic renewal conditions apply.
Adding cameras does not normally multiply the subscription fee. That makes Advanced easier to justify for a household with several compatible Google cameras than for one camera used only for occasional live checks.
Which Nest Cams qualify?
Google’s current support documentation says Gemini for Home camera features are available on Nest cameras launched in 2021 or later when they are set up in the Google Home app. Eligible legacy cameras may qualify after being transferred to Google Home.
Availability still depends on several conditions:
- The camera must be an eligible model and set up in Google Home, not solely the older Nest app.
- You need an active Google Home Premium Advanced subscription for the Gemini camera package.
- The feature is limited to adult Home Admins.
- Your country, language, camera capabilities and Google’s rollout status may affect availability. Google lists English for the current Gemini camera feature availability.
- Continuous recording requires compatible wired hardware; it is not available simply because a camera has Gemini features.
Older cameras may involve app compatibility or migration limitations, so “all Nest Cams” is too broad a description.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to enable Gemini camera features
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap Home, then Cameras.
- Select the camera.
- Tap the video player to open its controls.
- Tap More, then Settings.
- Tap Events, then Seen events.
- Turn on Gemini for Home camera features.
- Accept the Gemini disclosures if prompted.
- Tap Manage to choose which eligible cameras use the feature.
To disable it, follow the same path and turn the feature off globally or for individual cameras. Google says the feature is rolling out, so the option may not appear immediately even when the hardware and subscription appear eligible.
If the Gemini option is missing
Check these points in order:
- Confirm that the camera appears in the Google Home app.
- Verify that the model meets Google’s eligibility requirements or has been transferred from Nest.
- Confirm that you are an adult Home Admin.
- Check that the home has an active Advanced subscription, not Standard.
- Update the Google Home app.
- Accept any pending Gemini disclosures.
- Allow for Google’s account, language and regional rollout restrictions.
If video search finds no useful clip, inspect the ordinary event timeline. The event may have expired, the camera may have recorded only event clips, the camera may have been offline, or the activity may not have been detected or classified.

Nest Cam with Gemini remains a cloud-connected system. Live access, notifications, history and advanced analysis depend on the camera, Google Home app, Wi-Fi and internet connection. Advanced cannot restore footage that was never recorded, missed by detection or already expired.
Rank #4
- Meet the smarter, sharper wired Google Nest Cam Outdoor; with 2K HDR video and Gemini, it knows what to look out for and what to do next[1,2,3](Gemini features require a Google Home premium subscription; try it for 1 month at no cost to you)[4]
- Stay in the know with always-on power: Nest Cam Outdoor keeps you plugged into home, day and night, with no need to recharge or replace batteries
- Google Nest Cam Outdoor keeps your data safe with encrypted video, two-step verification, and enhanced security through your Google Account; and a green LED light lets you know when it’s processing or streaming video
- With an Advanced subscription to Google Home Premium, know more about what’s happening with notifications like “Rabbits eating garden plants”[3]; get even more detailed descriptions and tap to see a summary of what happened[3]
- Video is crisp and clear in 2K HDR, Nest Cam’s highest resolution yet[1,2]; see rich color and details, and see in the dark with night vision; a wider, taller field of view means almost nothing’s out of frame[1] – even in a long driveway or big yard
Camera footage and AI-generated interpretations are sensitive data. Review Google’s disclosures before enabling the feature and consider which household members can access the Home. Google states in its documentation that it does not train generative AI models outside Google Home with personal data; that is Google’s stated policy for the feature, not a guarantee that eliminates every privacy or security consideration.
Finally, Gemini descriptions should supplement—not replace—your own review of the clip or a professionally monitored alarm system. A camera can describe a scene without reliably establishing identity, intent or risk.
Is Google Home Premium Advanced worth it?
Advanced is the clearest fit if you have multiple Google cameras, regularly search past footage, want richer notifications or need 24/7 history on compatible wired hardware.
Standard may be enough if you mainly want 30 days of event history and intelligent alerts but do not need Gemini descriptions, natural-language search or continuous recording.
No subscription is reasonable if you only need live viewing, basic person/animal/vehicle detection and short event previews, and you want to avoid recurring costs.
For a single $99.99 indoor camera, Advanced costs about $300 before tax in the first year when billed annually, or about $340 when billed monthly. The feature package is most compelling when you will actively use its search, summaries or longer history—not merely because the camera carries the Gemini label.
