But it did not show that undersea-tunnel seals are failing early: the researchers projected that the tested gasket would still meet the study’s waterproofing requirement after 100 years under modeled conditions.
What a GINA gasket does in an immersed tunnel
Immersed tunnels are assembled from large sections built elsewhere, floated into position, and joined underwater. A GINA gasket is a key waterproofing component at the joint between those elements. Its sealing performance depends in part on maintaining contact pressure against the adjoining surfaces.
That makes aging relevant to tunnel design and maintenance: a change in the rubber’s material properties can affect the pressure available to seal a joint. It does not, by itself, establish that water is entering a tunnel.
What the 2026 study tested
Hongtao Mao and coauthors examined GINA-gasket aging in the context of China’s Yuliangzhou tunnel. Their study combined compression load with seawater exposure, then assessed macroscopic performance, microscopic morphology, and molecular structure. This matters because a gasket in service experiences sustained compression as well as its surrounding environment; seawater exposure alone does not capture both conditions.

The study reported a 67.66% attenuation in contact stress. It also measured a 14.18% increase in Shore A hardness and a 5.88% increase in density. These are changes in the tested material, not a count of tunnel leaks or a finding that all GINA gaskets age at the same rate. The article appeared in Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology, volume 169, article 107252, in March 2026: Mao et al., “Aging mechanism and life prediction of GINA gasket on immersed tunnel under the combined action of compression load and seawater environment: A multi-scale experimental analysis”.
What “decaying from the inside out” leaves out
The study describes changes in the gasket’s material structure and molecular properties. Its accessible summary does not establish that deterioration begins inside the gasket and spreads outward, so “inside out” should not be taken as a literal finding.

The researchers described three phases in contact-stress change: an initial steep drop, a prolonged moderate decline, and a final gradual convergence. They linked molecular-chain scission with reductions in room-temperature storage modulus and peak loss factor. After 90 days of accelerated aging, the study reported a 3.24 °C upward shift in glass-transition temperature and a 1.54 mol/cm³/10⁴ reduction in crosslinking density. Those 90 days refer to accelerated laboratory aging, not 90 days of service in a tunnel.
Mao and coauthors summarized their interpretation this way: “The aging essence of GINA gasket is material degradation caused by structural degradation.” This describes the material-level mechanism they investigated; it is not evidence that a tunnel joint had failed.

Does the study predict a leak or a shorter service life?
No. The study’s abstract projects contact stress of 1.51 MPa after 100 years under compression load and seawater exposure, and says the waterproofing requirements for immersed tunnels can still be met. Accessible article text gives a waterproofing index of 0.61 MPa. In that study’s comparison, the projected 1.51 MPa remains above the stated index.
This is a model-based projection for the studied gasket and conditions, not a guarantee for every tunnel, joint, or installation. Nor is it evidence of zero risk: a pressure projection does not establish the condition of all seals in service or rule out other causes of leakage.

The Daily Galaxy reported that 1.51 MPa was about 35% below an earlier 2.32 MPa projection based on seawater exposure alone. That comparison concerns projected contact pressure at the 100-year horizon; it does not mean the gasket’s service life is 35% shorter. The primary abstract confirms the 1.51 MPa figure but does not itself state the 2.32 MPa comparison. The Daily Galaxy’s March 31, 2026 report is secondary coverage of that comparison.

The results highlight why engineers assess seals under conditions that reflect their service environment, including sustained compression. They do not show that undersea tunnels are unsafe, that a particular tunnel is leaking, or that the findings apply uniformly across tunnel networks. The study concerns a tested GINA gasket and a modeled service projection; assessing an operating tunnel requires evidence about that tunnel’s design, inspection findings, and maintenance history.

Research into tunnel-seal aging predates this study. A separate 2020 paper evaluated EPDM under artificial seawater and hot-air conditions, but EPDM findings should not be treated as results for the GINA gasket studied in 2026.
