What is the Belonio stove?
Associated with agricultural engineer Alexis T. Belonio, the stove was developed to make rice husks—a byproduct of rice milling—useful as household cooking fuel. The 2005 Rice Husk Gas Stove Handbook describes it as a top-lit updraft (T-LUD) gasifier adapted for small-particle fuel.
That description refers to the Belonio design documented in the handbook, not every appliance sold as a rice-husk gasifier. Designs can differ in their reactor and fuel-feed arrangements.
How does it make a cooking flame?
In the documented T-LUD design, primary air rises through a column of dry rice husks while the gasification zone moves downward. The process generates combustible gas, which is carried to a burner and ignited. A 1989 technical paper from the National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines describes a blower drawing air through the reactor and gas passing through an annular space to reach the burner.

A fan or blower is therefore a functional part of the described setup. Contemporary reporting noted that the fan requires grid electricity or batteries. This is not simply a matter of lighting husks in an open fire: airflow supports gas generation and the burner flame.
What does it need to operate?
- Fuel: The documented Belonio design uses dry rice husks. Do not assume another biomass fuel is suitable without the manufacturer’s guidance.
- Power: The fan or blower needs a power source; reported setups use grid electricity or batteries.
- Safe operation: Check the specific stove’s instructions for ventilation, ash handling, cleaning, fuel preparation, and maintenance before use.
These requirements can vary by model. A product’s label alone does not establish that it follows Belonio’s design or has been tested to the same specifications.

What should you check when evaluating a rice-husk gasifier?
There is no reliable, comparable test in the cited sources for ranking current models. If you are assessing a specific stove, ask the seller or manufacturer for information on:
- Whether it is batch-fed or uses continuous fuel feed, and how often fuel must be added.
- Burner count and stated cooking capacity.
- Required fan power source and expected power use.
- Fuel moisture limits and any preparation requirements.
- Start-up time and the test conditions behind the stated figure.
- Emissions testing and efficiency methodology, including who performed the tests.
- Cleaning, ash disposal, replacement parts, and local availability of suitable rice husks.
For historical context, Paul S. Anderson’s preface to the 2005 handbook called it the “first (and currently only)” T-LUD gasifier able to use small-particle fuel. That was his assessment at the time, not a current market survey. In a 2008 Christian Science Monitor report, Anderson praised Belonio’s engineering and airflow design; his comparative praise was opinion, not a controlled test.

Is the Belonio stove currently available?
The cited sources document a real appliance and its technical design, but they do not establish current retail availability, a current price, or the specifications of products now advertised as rice-husk gasifiers.
