Roots usually grow down while shoots grow up, and a seedling near a window may bend toward the light. Those patterns arise from plants responding to several environmental cues: gravity helps orient growth, light can guide it, and water supports plant function. The cues interact, so no single rule explains every plant or growing setup.
How do gravity and light guide plant growth?
A plant does not consciously choose a direction. Its growth responds to environmental signals, including gravity and light.
Gravitropism: growth in response to gravity
NASA Ames Research Center defines gravitropism as “a plant’s growth in response to the pull of gravity.” On Earth, gravity provides a consistent directional cue: roots typically grow downward, while shoots grow upward. The familiar orientation is a result of growth responses, not the plant moving as a whole. NASA Ames: TROPI-2
Phototropism: growth in response to light
NASA Ames defines phototropism as “a plant’s growth response to a direct source of light.” A plant can grow toward a light source, as seen when a seedling bends toward a bright window. Light is therefore another directional cue, distinct from gravity. NASA Ames: TROPI-2

What happens when gravity and light cues overlap?
Gravity and light do not operate as isolated instructions. Their effects can overlap: NASA’s TROPI research examined how plants perceive and respond to both cues, including whether the root’s gravitropic response competes with or masks a phototropic response. Experiments in altered gravity help researchers investigate light responses with less interference from Earth’s constant gravitational pull. NASA Ames: TROPI
This interaction is why a plant’s direction cannot always be predicted from the light source alone. The outcome depends on the cues and conditions acting together; NASA’s findings do not amount to one universal growth recipe.

How does water support growth on Earth and in space?
Water uptake is a separate issue from directional growth. On Earth, roots draw water upward through capillary action. In microgravity, water does not move and settle in the familiar way, so NASA studies delivery approaches such as hydroponic and capillary methods that can bring water to roots without relying on gravity in the usual way. NASA says photosynthesis can proceed normally in microgravity when adequate light, water, and nutrients are supplied. That describes plants under those conditions; it does not mean gravity has no effect on plant development or that water delivery is interchangeable across environments. How do controlled growing systems account for these cues?
Spaceflight plant growing illustrates how a system must manage conditions that Earth often supplies naturally. NASA’s ISS Veggie facility uses a flat-panel light bank, and NASA has successfully grown edible crops in orbit. Light, water, nutrients, and the way they reach a plant all matter; the method used to manage them depends on whether the goal is an experiment or an operational crop system. For ordinary growing, these principles explain why orientation, light placement, and water access all affect development. They do not establish ideal light hours, watering amounts, or wavelengths for every species; those depend on the plant and setup.
